Signed as a True and Correct Copy of the Mitcham Cricket Club’s 2014-2015 Annual General Meeting: ……………………………………….. Ken O’Meara – President Date: 30 May, 2016 Mitcham Cricket Club Inc. 2015-2016 President’s Report It is again an honour to present my 2015-2016 President’s Report for the Mitcham CC. Season 2015-16, like seasons before, had been a mix of highs and lows which is what makes club sport so great. The season began with high hopes of improving on last season’s results - to play finals in the 1st XI was where we wanted to be and to also feature in finals in other Senior and Junior grades. Our 2nd and 3rd XI were thrown a challenge by the BHRDCA by being promoted, without our consultation, into higher grades from the previous season despite neither grade playing in last season’s grand finals. However, ultimately our goal should be to always play the highest standard of cricket that we can. We therefore accepted the challenge, with both teams being competitive at times, albeit neither team made the Finals. Our first XI performed well all year and subsequently achieved the goal of playing in the Semi Final. Unfortunately we had our worst game of the year and bowed out in the first week. As they say, that’s cricket!! F Grade, under the leadership of Vitaly Chipizubov, achieved a third flag in 3 years. In anyone’s eyes, this was a great effort, particularly when you take into account that several players from previous years teams had been elevated into higher grades. Overall, this season’s performances leaves Mitcham CC well placed to improve next season and there is no doubt that the expectations for next season will be much higher. The Junior program continues to flourish and delivered throughout the age groups over the season. Highlighting the U12 program was the undefeated U12a winning the Flag and the U12c making the Semi Finals. The Junior Committee continues to make good decisions and is leading the growth though out the age groups. When combined with all junior sides being well coached, the future looks very bright for Mitcham CC’s Juniors. The Veterans saw a drop in numbers forcing the O40’s to drop a team. However, work is underway to restore that team next season. In addition, there is a push to form an O60’s competition, an age bracket that suits many of our members. The highlight of the Vets’ season was the O40a’s and O50c’s making the semi-finals. However, they were unable to take the next step with both sides losing their respective semi-finals. This season, the Club made a major commitment to the coaching of our club where we appointed to two new Senior Assistant Coaches, including a nonplaying Assistant and the appointment of a high profile Junior Development Coach in Ian “Dutchy” Holland. The reigning Ryder Medallist and Bushranger held the pre-season “Coach the Coach” sessions and attended training sessions across most age groups. Unfortunately for us, “Dutchy” was selected in the Victorian squad late in the season that saw him miss several planned sessions at Mitcham. We hope to retain “Dutchy” in the role for 2016-17. We also introduced the Tiger Cub Foundation (replacing the Ton Club) to raise money for not only “Dutchy’s” sessions, but also to bring in other specialist coaches including former Test Vice Captain and current Victorian Selector, Ray Bright. It is our intention to continue to offer this type of coaching to our players and coaches. Socially we had a few really good functions with: • • • The Melb Cup Eve Bogan Bingo and The Karaoke Night all being great nights. To this end, I want to specifically thank the ladies who populate our Social –Sub Committee. However, the disappointment was that not one player was prepared to serve on the Social Committee. Next season I would like to see the balance improved in this regard. There are many members who give untiring service to our club every year and this season we awarded the Ross Collins Award for Best Clubman to Brett Wheeler for his efforts as a late call up to the 6th’s captaincy, T20 scoring and team management, running the training nets every Tuesday and Thursday plus the pre-season training sessions. Life Membership in 2015-2016 was bestowed on Steve Frost for 25 years of service across Junior and Senior Committees. Life Membership in our club is hard to achieve with just 38 Life Members across our 137 year history and with recent eligibility changes, Life Membership will be even harder to achieve. Congratulations to Steve Frost, a very worthy recipient of Life Membership of Mitcham CC. This season saw us lose one of our Iconic Life Members with the passing of Allan Haggar, a man who spent 60 years at our club. His sudden passing saddened us all, however the response from our club members was nothing short of inspiring and made me very proud to be your President. In closing I would like to thank my committee for their efforts over the last 12 months. Their individual and collective work and effort is appreciated. However, despite all the good work of the Committee, we still need to be better at spreading the workload around the club as I believe some members take on far too much while others could help more. I say it regularly, but if you can do one small thing each week that saves someone else doing it, then we will have a better club. To this end, we need to avoid burning members out over a season so that we can all enjoy playing or being around the club. As a club it’s time we started to get serious about improving the club at all levels as quickly as we can to ensure that we return our club to the top level of the BHRDCA. That is, it is not only about what happens on the ground, rather myself as President must be better, the Committee must be better and we all need to perform better. I hope everyone is up for the challenge.
