SOUTHVALLEYDATAATLAS PreparedforLaReddelRioAbajo Ma12,2016 NMEVALUATIONLAB UniversityofNewMexico SouthValleyDataAtlas INTRODUCTION ThemainobjectiveofthisearlydevelopmentalevaluationforLaRedistoprovideasocialand demographicsnapshotofAlbuquerque’sSouthValley.Thedatatellastoryofcommunity strengthsandchallenges.Wehopethatacompilationofthesestrengthsandchallengeswill helpLaRedorganizationsdocumentthecontextinwhichtheywork.PerhapstheAtlaswillalso incubateideasfornewwaystomobilizethecommunity. ANOTEABOUTTHEDATA MostoftheinformationwereportiscollectedbytheUnitedStatesCensusBureau.TheCensus Bureaucollectsinformationfrommorethan3millionresidenceseveryyearthroughits AmericanCommunitySurvey(ACS).TheACShasreplacedthe“longform”ofthedecennial Census,providingthesamedata,butmorefrequently. Sinceonlyasmallpercentageofhouseholdsaresurveyedinanygivenyear,thedataavailable forsmallgeographiesareforafive-yearperiod.Thislongertimeframeensuresthat informationiscollectedfromenoughhouseholdssothatthecommunityisfaithfully represented.WeusethemostrecentavailableACSdata,whichareforthe2010-2014period. Byahappycoincidence,the87105zipcodedefinestheSouthValleyverywell,anddatabyzip codecanbereadilyaccessedthroughtheCensusBureau’sAmericanFactFindertool http://factfinder.census.gov. AlthoughtheACSisagreatsourceofdata,thereareafewlimitationstoconsider.First,any officialsurveymostsurelyundercountsundocumentedimmigrants.AlthoughtheACSpromises anonymity,anddoesnotaskquestionsaboutimmigrationstatus,thosewhoprefertostay“off theradar”arelikelyreluctanttorespondtoadetailedsurvey.ThedatareportedbytheACS accountfornon-respondingunitsbyincreasingthe“weight”ofrespondingunits.This techniquewillprovideagoodestimateofcommunitycharacteristicsonlyifnon-responding unitsareverysimilartorespondingunits. If,asislikely,non-respondingunitsaremateriallyandsociallydisadvantaged,thedatawill overestimatecommunitywell-being.Itisthereforereasonabletointerpretthereporteddata asanupperboundofwell-being;realwell-beingisprobablysomewhatlower. Inthe“SouthValleyNumbers”section,wealsoprovideanadjustedestimateofthesizeofthe immigrantcommunity,basedonthemethodsusedbythePewResearchCenter,awellrespectedsourceofinformationontheHispanicpopulationintheUnitedStates.
