5th May 2017 Dear Parents/Guardians As the exams are approaching, it is incredibly important that students are revising in their own time. No year group in the recent past has had to revise this much content for their English exams and this means that getting personal revision right is more important than ever. With that in mind, I wanted to write to you and outline the best ways that students can be revising for their English Language and Literature exams. I would appreciate you support in talking to your son or daughter about how and what they are revising for English. A lot of preparation is taking place in lessons but as the first exam draws closer, students must be revising independently. English Literature Paper 1 – Macbeth and A Christmas Carol Monday 22nd May 9.00am PixLit App – students can use this app to revise for Macbeth and A Christmas Carol. It will help them revise the plot and quotations. If they have lost their login details, they can come to see me in H0. English Literature Paper 1 Booklet – this booklet will provide students with key quotations. They can use the Look-Cover-Write-Check process to try to memorise these. It will also provide students with advice and practice exam questions. If students complete a practice question (or paragraph) they should seek feedback from their teacher to ensure they are on the right track. Revision Notes – students could make notes about key characters or themes. These notes should include key quotations and events, and most importantly what the writer is saying through or about that character. Sparknotes.com is a good resource to make these notes. English Literature Paper 2 – An Inspector Calls and Poetry Friday 26th May 9.00am English Literature Paper 2 Booklet – this booklet will provide similar resources to the one described above for Paper 1. Revision Notes – students could make notes about key characters or themes for An Inspector Calls and about poems and which poems can be compared for the other part of the paper. These notes should include key quotations and events, and most importantly what the writer is saying through or about that character. Sparknotes.com is a good resource for An Inspector Calls. Mr Bruff’s Youtube channel is a good way to revise all of English Literature. English Language Paper 1 – Reading and Writing Fiction Texts Tuesday 6th June 9.00am Cont…/overleaf English Language Paper 2 – Reading and Writing Non-Fiction Texts Monday 12th June Purple Revision Workbook – your son or daughter should have received a purple AQA Revision workbook at Parents’ Evening earlier in the year. This book will be incredibly helpful in terms of preparation for both Language exams. They should be working in it regularly. English Language Skills Sheets – students should know which questions from each paper they are less secure in. If they are unsure, they can ask their class teacher. On Show My Homework, every Year 11 student has a homework set with a range of sheets which will help them prepare for each question. Physical copies of these sheets are available from H0. There is also a whole host of other resources on the school website. Click on the Exams tab and then on Revision. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely MR P FOSTER HEAD OF ENGLISH
