November 15, 2013 7Opinion.indd 3 (Sound it out) Try to imagine a world without laughter. A world where you trip up the stairs and no one videotapes it and puts it on the internet. A world where we live in ignorant bliss and never look at things from a different perspective. Luckily, this “world” does not exist, but it very well could, if the inhabitants don’t understand the importance of satire. You may think satire is not as valuable to our society as things like food, sewage treatment or medical research, but it is in fact, more valuable! The first known record of satire is actually in the Bible. In Leviticus 18:22 it says, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” As you can see, satire dates back 3500 years ago. Without satire, people may believe that this statement was meant to be taken seriously! This example of satire shows us that these sassy stories can be found in biblical proportions. Of course, when discussing satire, we could not forget about one of the most influential satirists, Jonathan Swift. In 1729, Mr. Swift wrote an essay encouraging the Irish to eat their own children in order to prevent the children of poor families being a burden on their parents. A lot of people were incredibly disturbed, thinking this article was actually encouraging people to eat their young. It seems that many people in this day and age are dealing with the same problem of being unable to understand satire. If we cannot look at things from different perspectives, we may be missing out on not only humor, but also the important issues hidden within that humor. If you would like to practice your witty skills of satirical writing, remember to discuss important things like: ● The growing trend of house arrest bracelets amongst students. ● Why water bottles will probably never be allowed at a southwest sporting event. ● What makes dance parties enjoyable in the slightest. ● Why Hillary Clinton isn’t president already, like seriously. ● How not to get hit by a truck. ● What else the cheerleaders can make Tshirts for. Satire is important to not only help us look at things from a different perspective but also for the well being of our lives. As a satirical writer, I want to make people laugh and enjoy themselves, which is why pretty much everything I write in this column is a joke. Or maybe, everything I write is just disguised as a joke, but it’s really focusing on issues I believe are important to recognize. 7 Hawk Talk Opinion 2/27/14 12:12 PM
