It will operate from 4-8pm within the school and Kindergarten grounds. There is much to do and as we all know, many hands make light work, so please consider bringing the kids down and contributing to the school. Much of what is required is not specialised work ie cleaning, gardening and minor handy-person jobs. FREE BBQ provided. Child Safe Policy Our Child Safe Policy has been completed and is currently being distributed to all staff and volunteers who enter our school grounds. A big thank you, to the Welfare Team for their input into this crucial document. Volunteers signing in at the School Office will also be required to wear a lanyard for easy identification and obviously, as well, continue to provide updated Working With Children Checks before undertaking their role in the school. Did You Know…? Again, in 2016, we will be holding a Writer’s Festival for our students. Further details will be posted closer to the event. We look forward to celebrating all students producing their own very best writing pieces to share with our community later this term. Joke of the Week! Max – Room 12 Q – Why did the boy take a ladder to school? A – Because it was a High School! Page 3 Miners Rest Primary School Across the Principals Desk - Dale Power Dale’s Dribble: Michael Grose Parenting Tips (World Renowned) FINAL EDITION BIG FIVE Parenting Skill # 5: Teaching kids coping skills The rhino is the last and rarest of the BIG FIVE African animals. The rhino with the support of conservationists around the world has proven to be a resilient species, as it’s been driven to the edge of extinction in recent years. Fortunately, the decline in rhino numbers has been halted, making a small but significant rise. Like the rhino, there are times when kids need to bounce back. But they do need the support of adults who can teach them how to cope when live throws them curve balls. Helping kids cope is one the big five skill sets parents need if they are maintain kids’ mental health in this modern, sometimes difficult world. Here are my favourite five coping skills. 1.See the funny side of a situation: Humour is THE great coping strategy. It reduces stress and heightens feelings of control. 2. Park their bad thoughts somewhere: The ability to compartmentalise your life and keep bad events from impacting on all areas is a powerful coping skill. “Don’t let this wreck your day” is an important message to get across to kids. 3. Let’s talk about it: A problem shared is a problem halved. Resilient kids seek solace in the company of others, when they experience difficulty. That’s why social connection is so important for kids. 4. Keep your perspective: Some kids catastrophise (‘this is the worst thing to happen to me........ever’) and others will personalise (‘it’s my fault that I have no friends’) when bad stuff happens. These types of reactions exaggerate anxiety. One way kids can keep a sense of proportion is to ask them to identify their problem or difficulty on a disaster scale of 1 to 10. Another is to wind back their language. 5. Set a goal or two: Help kids look ahead rather than backwards when bad stuff happens. “Let’s take the first step” can have a powerful impact on a child or young person when life doesn’t go their way. Page 4 Miners Rest Primary School From the Kindergarten Check out our brand new mud kitchen! A huge thank-you to Damien Hodge, Nicholas’ dad, for making the kitchen for us. We have been having lots of fun pretending to cook food and experimenting with turning dirt to mud. A reminder that we are in the middle of our SunSmart period and hats must be worn for outdoor play. Please remember to pack a wide brimmed hat for your child to wear at kinder. We have been enjoying spending lots of time outside. We have been making the most of all the rain we have had recently by making rivers in the sandpit. We’ve also found some frogs at kinder that we think must have enjoyed the rain too!
