MAKING WAVES January 2016 | TEMPO Aquatics Newsletter Jingle Bells Santa Claus Comes to TEMPO Please remember to bring the bells you received in your Christmas goodie bags to practice! We’d like to use them for some fun kicking sets! On the last day of practice before the holidays, the swimmers anxiously awaited a promised surprise at the end of practice. Once they quickly dried off and dressed in warm clothes, the kids gathered on the bleachers to first celebrate Coach Ben’s birthday with brownies and singing! Then everyone joined together for a few Christmas carols and the reading of the TEMPO Christmas poem by Coach Caitlin. Suddenly, a special guest appeared - Santa Claus! With smiles and bags of treats in hand, it was a great way to welcome in the Christmas holiday! Rainy Practices This is just another friendly reminder that practice will still be held even if there is rain. However, if there is thunder and lightning within 30 minutes of practice, it is likely that we will have to cancel for the safety of our swimmers. Also remember to wear warm clothes and shoes, especially for those in Green or White group who arrive early to practice. 1 White Group Coaches the Big Kids Good Luck Champs Swimmers! On January 16th and 17th, the following swimmers will be competing in the Zone 1 South Championships in Morgan Hill: • Hannah Smith • Nolan Smith • Derek Hanel • Alexis Goldin • Morgan Olsen • Odelia Hui Recently at TEMPO we decided to try a fun activity in which the younger kids in White group taught a skill to the older kids in the Green and Blue groups. The White Group had been working hard on their streamlines and breaststroke pulldowns with Coach Caitlin, so we decided to test their knowledge. After partnering up, each pair practiced pushing off the wall, with the younger kids instructing the older kids on what they were doing well and what they needed to improve on. Gwynn (5) and her partner Alexis (15) were a hoot to watch as little Gwynn caught every single mistake Alexis made, then demonstrated the proper technique herself. It was great to see how well the White Group kids did with this challenge. In the words of Coach Gwynn, when you streamline, always remember to “keep your arms straight like a pencil!” Countdown to the Olympics The year 2016 is just beginning, and you know what that means… it’s almost time for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! To prepare ourselves for the exciting event, TEMPO has set a goal to “swim” all the way from San Jose, CA to Rio de Janeiro. First we will be making a pitstop in Athens, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic games, to pick up the torch and carry it with us on our journey. To follow our progress, check out the map posted on the wall near the pool! Do you know where we’re at today? We wish these swimmers the best of luck as they compete against swimmers from all over the area. Please remember that in order to be eligible for meets like this, you need to have entered a meet prior. Look out for emails regarding upcoming meets and sign up as quickly as possible to secure a spot! If you have any questions about this, please see your coaches at practice. We’d love to have a big group at meets to represent TEMPO! 2
