1. As you travel along a highway you notice the mile markers and reflectors along the
side of the road. There are 21 reflectors between the mile markers (you can ignore
the wide of each reflector). If the reflectors are equally spaced, how many metres are
between each reflector? (1 mile = 1760 yards and 1 yard = 3 feet, 1 inch = 2.54 cm)
(ans 73.2 m)
2. A cold medication indicates that an adult should take a one-half US fluid ounce (fl oz)
dose. An adult patient calls the pharmacy and says he only has a small medicine cup
labeled in milliliters. How many milliliters should the pharmacy tell him to take for a
correct dosage? (1 fl oz = 0.125 cups, 1 cup = 236.6 ml) (ans 14.8 ml)
3. A copier takes 4 minutes to duplicate 480 pages. Express the rate at which the copier
duplicates, in pages per second. (ans 2 pages/s)
4. Angela is recovering from surgery. The doctor told her to lift no more than 20 pounds
for the next 3 weeks. A carton of powdered carpet cleaner weighs 5 kilograms.
Should Angela lift the carton? (16 oz = 1 pound, 28.349 grams = 1 oz) (ans 5 kg = 11
pds)
5. You are trying to balance a teeter totter, with
average sized\mass stones. If your weight is 930
Newtons (I’ll explain this later), how many stones
do you need to balance the teeter totter? ( 2.5 kg =
24.5 Newton, 1 pound = .455 kg, 1 stone = 14
pounds) (ans 14.9 stones)
6. You are looking for a can or bucket to hold your
marbles (the round kind) and find a paint can
labelled One US gallon. If one marble has a volume of 2.57 cm3, approximately how
many marbles will fit in the paint can? (You can ignore the empty space between the
marbles in the can) (1 US gal = 3.87 liters and 1 ml = 1 cm3 ) (ans about 1505)
7. You are on your way for a 3 day camping trip when you notice a highway vendor
selling fire wood by the cord, so you stop to buy some. You ask how much and how big
a cord is? The seller tells you 1 cord is about 128 ft3 and it would cost 65$. Thinking
that was a lot of wood for 3 days, you do some quick math, 3 days = 3 camp fires, 20
logs per fire, 1 log averages 35.0 cm x 10.0 cm x 15.0 cm….how much did you pay the
person? (ans $5.67 – being nice you tip to $6.00)
