Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is currently learning to recognize shapes that have been
divided into equal parts. Here is your chance to help your child
practice this important skill.
In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.
Remember, parents are a child’s first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.
Sincerely,

RECOGNIZING SHAPES THAT HAVE BEEN
DIVIDED INTO EQUAL PARTS
Parent Pointer —
Your child is learning how to recognize shapes that have been divided
into equal parts. Because an object must be divided evenly to show
fractional parts, this skill is an important part of your child’s learning
to understand fractions. Fractions are all around us. They are used in
our lives on a daily basis: in cooking, when measuring 2 of a cup of
3
milk; while shopping, when buying an item that costs $4.25; and even
with food, when deciding who wants the 1 of the pizza that is left.

Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It —
DIRECTIONS: Read and talk about the Equal Parts reference sheet
with your child. Be sure he or she understands that each piece in a
shape must be the same size for the shape to be divided equally. Read
the directions to the activity on the Back to Start! activity page to
your child. Have fun playing this game and try not to go “back to
start”!
Talk about It —
After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to have
your child show what he or she knows.
Now go have some fun with the activity! (

Parent —
Ask your child the following questions:
9What does it mean if a shape is divided into equal
parts?
9What does it mean if a shape is not divided equally?
Write your child’s answers to the above questions on the
reverse side of this page.
OR
Do one of the following activities on the reverse side of
this page:
9Draw three different shapes. Divide two of them into
equal parts and one into unequal parts. Ask your child
to circle the shapes that have been divided equally.
9With your child, look inside or outside your home or in
a magazine for shapes that have been divided equally.
For example, a window, a calendar, and a cake may be
divided equally. Have your child draw pictures (or
paste pictures from a magazine) to show the objects
he or she found.
