Simplify/Factor the following expressions: (Product Sum Group Method)
1) 4x2 – 12x + 9; Factors of a·c (36) are -1,-36 -2,-18 -3,-12 -4,-9 -6,-6;
(-6) + (-6) = - 12 so,
4x2 – 6x – 6x + 9 = (4x2 – 6x) – (6x – 9) = 2x(2x – 3) – 3(2x – 3)
= (2x – 3) (2x – 3)
2) 5x2 – 6x + 1; Factors of a·c (5) are -1,-5; (-1) + (-5) = - 6 so,
5x2 – x – 5x + 1 = (5x2 – x) – (5x – 1) = x(5x – 1) – (5x – 1)
= (5x – 1) (x – 1)
