You may think a spider is an insect, but insects have six legs, spiders have eight. Bugs with eight legs
are called arachnid
Spiders eat insects. First the spider makes a web. Spiders know how to make a web without being
taught how to. Spiders use silk to make webs. The silk is very strong. Then the insect lands in the soft
and strong web.
Next the spider wraps the web around the insect. After, they infuse their fangs into the prey with
their venom. This is called paralysing. Finally they eat their dinner.
Spiders don’t have very good eyesight so they use vibrations to find their prey on the web.
How Spiders Catch their Prey
By Will 3SG
Spiders are an often seen arachnid that is sometimes mistaken for an insect. Arachnids have 8 legs
while insects have only 6 .Many people have arachnophobia the fear of spiders.
Most breeds of spiders catch their prey by making 20-80 centimetre webs, out of the spiders super
strong silk .Insects fly into the web.
The spider then covers the insect in their super strong web. They paralyse their prey with highly
deadly venom.
Spiders mostly make webs because they have very poor eyesight, they use the insects vibrations to
locate it. Spiders can make webs without being taught.

Should people be allowed to use horses for racing?
I believe that people should not use horses for racing
because if something bad happens to the horse, the horse
will die and the person who was racing that horse won’t be
able to race.
I believe that people should not use horses for racing
because if the horses keep dying, the horse racing crew will
just have to keep replacing them over and over again.
I believe that we should not use horses for racing because if
we take the horses out of their habitat, they will just have to
keep training the horses, and it takes hard work and long
time to train horses.
I strongly believe that we should NOT use horses for racing
for all of these reasons.

Marshmallow Cookies
Marshmallow cookies are naturally delicious. Many, many people love eating them. If you
examine a marshmallow cookie you would be able to see that it looks easy to make.
People put hard effort into making these sorts of treats for you. I will be explaining to you
how marshmallow cookies are made.
The first machine which is called ‘the mixer’ mixes all the cookie ingredients together.
The ingredients are flour, salt, baking soda, corn starch, whey powder and potassium
sorbate. They would also put vegetable oil and a transparent liquid called glutose
fructose which is a sweetener. These liquids make the biscuit lighter. All the ingredients
get mixed up in the machine and are transferred to the next one. This next machine, ‘the
chipper’ makes the cookie dough smaller into the right size for the next machine. The
size of the dough should then be the size of a highlighter cap.
The next machine called ‘the rotary’ then flattens the cookie dough into a one and a half
centimetre flat sheet. This dough is flattened for the next machine. The machine moulds
the dough into a cookie shape. In this case the mould is round. The flattened dough rolls
passed the moulder, its surface moulds the shape of the cookie. The next stop takes the
cookies to a baking sheet. The baking sheets carry the cookies to the oven. Due to the
factory secrets they don’t want to reveal the time limit and temperature for the cookies.
The baked cookie bases would then move on to a cooling area.
Once the cookies are done cooling down they are moved on to a machine called ‘the
base feeder’. It allows the marshmallow cookie bases to line up all in a row like marching
soldiers. This machine lets the base receive its marshmallow filling. This machine is very
special and delicate, because it needs to be supervised and adjusted daily. If the
machine messes up the whole batch would need to be thrown out. The marshmallow
filled cookies are then transferred to a machine which is a mini chocolate waterfall. These
cookies roll right under the waterfall and are covered in chocolate. Once this process is
done air jets will then blow off all the chocolate leftovers. The wet chocolate cookies need
to enter the cooling tunnel; as soon as they are dry they go straight into the packing area.
This is done by human and machine. The machine assembles the boxes and mini trays.
The workers there take the marshmallow cookies and put them in the trays. They also
need to taste test it, then they do a snap test to see if the chocolate coating is hard
enough. The cookies then move onto the final machine that wraps then up. The machine
wraps it up with some plastic and then it slides into a cardboard box. The box would have
the company’s label.
The marshmallow cookies are then be sent to a supermarket and sold. So the next time
you eat a marshmallow cookie think of how it’s made! People put quite a lot of effort to
make these cookies.

The dark mine
I am in a dark mine under Ballarat. As I walk further down the muddy steps I hear the
screech of frightened boys and girls stepping into the pitch black mine I walk some more
and the lights dim and flicker as I hear the groan of miners and the quiet whispers of
talkative children.
In the distance I see what I think at first is markings in the wall but I soon realise that it is
a ladder which I climb up. At the top I see a faint leak in the roof and I hear the sound of
rushing water. I smell chlorine and the mud mixing with it BUT suddenly the water stops
and we head down the dark mine.
We come across a sharp bend that leads us to a brilliant 3D hologram about a man who
struck gold. The show ends and we walk back to a vault and we see a massive gold
nugget in the dark mine.

Should people be allowed to use horses for racing?
I believe we should be allowed to use horses for racing because it is
exciting entertainment to watch.
I think the horses have lots of fun racing each other and having a big
challenge.
The horses stay fit and healthy when they race. They stay fit and
healthy because they gallop and race.
The Jockeys have fun racing and they get challenged when they try to
win the race.
It keeps the horses fit and the Jockeys and the horses have lots of fun.
The Blobfish
The blob fish is one very disgusting looking fish. You would not like to
touch it. Cover it if you’re squeamish. This is a picture of what it looks like.
See! Told you it is disgusting.
Description
This blob fish can be yellow, orange or pink. As you can see this one is pink.
These fish are almost extinct and can only be found in New Zealand,
Tasmania and maybe here in Australia. It lays about 8500 to 9000 eggs. So
why would it be extinct? The blob fish has no muscles so how would it
move in the water by itself? It has a strange looking nose and a slimy
mouth. It is known to be the world’s ugliest creature.
Blob fish do not move that often, unless there is food near the fish. This is
probably why it is almost extinct. We cannot see them because they are
where it is deep and dark in the ocean. If they are outside water for a long
time their skin will become dry and the blob fish will slowly start to die.
Interesting Facts
1. This fish is about the size of a medium rock.
2. The blob fish is made out of jelly and does not have muscles. You cannot eat this
type of jelly.
3. The blob fish is even slower than a snail.
4. You cannot keep a blob fish as a pet otherwise it will probably die which means
you are making it endangered because of the type of water we keep in our water
tanks.
5. Since this fish does not have muscles it eats its food by opening its mouth and
whatever goes in there is dead. Not really!

How Lego Is Made
We have all played with Lego once in our life time, ever
wondered how they are made? Well, I’ll tell you how.
Most Lego pieces start as tiny granules of plastic in Denmark in
one of the 14 silos they have, each one filled with a different
colour. All together there is about 33 tonnes of plastic in the
silos. Then pipes suck the granules out of the silos and send
them to a room with 1000 machines that melt the blocks at 232
degrees celsius, shape them, cool them down and spit them in a
bucket.
1.7 million blocks get made every hour and 1 billion every year.
When a container is full, a robotic car comes around, picks it up
and puts it in a storage hall which then stores it in a section
filled with other blocks like it. After that the heads are made
and about 15,000 heads are made every hour. Then a rubber
stamp comes around and puts faces on each of the Lego heads.
After that, the bodies are made the same as the heads but
they go around a machine and if any of the bodies are
backwards they get blown off the machine and back in the
bunch and come through the machine again. Then the bodies and
heads get put together by a machine. After that 120 designers
make new models to build.
Did you know that the word ‘Lego’ came from the Danish phrase
‘leg godt’ which means ‘play well’? Lego is really interestingly
made!

Have you ever wondered where your everyday paper comes from? Well keep
reading and find out how it’s made.
Firstly the wood (logs) goes into the debarking truck which removes the bark
from the logs, this takes around 20 minutes. The bark is burnt to produce
steam to power the other machines to make paper. The debarked logs are cut
up into small pieces called kindling. Then they are stored in piles outside
during summer and winter.
They turn the kindling to paste and then they start washing it. After that they
cook it for several hours at the temperature of 158o centigrade. Then the
wood goes to a recreation boiler and burns the wood at 1000o. The burnt
wood turns into black liquor, which is burnt to produce steam. The brown
paste from the washer is washed and then sent to the thickener. Then they
use a spatula to see if it is nice and bleached. The alkaline tower places the
brown paste with chemicals and makes it more bleached, then the water is
dried off.
The worm screw breaks the paste so it can pump it to the water reservoir.
Water is extracted with three paper machines operating at a speed of 1060
metres per minute. The paste goes from 95% to 5% water.
The analysers check the quality of the paper and signals any anomaly. The
rolls are then sent to a warehouse where they are cut into small pieces by
robots.
This is how copy paper is made, our technology nowadays is so advanced and
now most of the things that are made in factories are made by machines. If
you were ever wondering where your everyday copy paper is made then there
you go. That is how it’s made!

How Tassie Devils Got White Markings
Several centuries ago, on a sunny morning in the bush (Australia) there lived
2 Tasmanian Devils named Shazza and Bazza and a White Kangaroo named
Dumbo
The Devils knew each other but they didn’t know the White Kangaroo. They
only met at Uluru. Uluru is the most famous landmark in Australia because it
has been around since lots more Aboriginals were alive. The twins were
playing hide and seek so Dumbo wanted to play. They said “Okay, you can join
in.” After a few hours of games, everyone had to go home. Soon both families
knew each other and they were friends. The 3 friends had organised to have
a picnic for fun.
Soon, the best friends had packed all their stuff and they headed to the
water hole. When they got there the 3 friends had a great big water fight.
Shazza accidently bumped Bazza who knocked Dumbo and Dumbo fell in and
she was swimming! For some reason, the twins had white stuff on their body
and the kangaroo was RED! It turns out it was a red kangaroo and it made
the water white. Shazza and Bazza were the only Tasmanian Devils in the
bush and they had babies. Their babies names were Bob and Jeff.
If you see any Tassie Devils today, you will remember the story of how
Tasmanian Devils Got White Markings.

The Tsunami Adventure by Blake 4C
I had a dream that Jose, Duc Huy, Deonte and I were in San Andreas. A huge
earthquake happened and it was so destructive that it destroyed the whole
city.
A few minutes after it was quiet everyone was on the ground injured and then
it happened! A 70 metre high tsunami towered over all the buildings and
destroyed everything and washed away people, children and babies. Only four
people survived.
Those four people were Deonte, Duc Huy, Jose and I. We were the last people
standing. We were on a jet boat and Deonte tumbled off the boat and was
floating in the tsunami stream and we had to save him. Then there was
another tsunami and it was 30 metres high. We had to get over the tsunami
before it hit land.
We finally got over it and we were safe. We called a rescue ambulance and
they saved us and got us to safety. I woke up and realised it was just a dream.
Hot dogs are a famous type of food all around the world and are famous for
how delicious they are and how interestingly they’re made.
In order to make a delicious hotdog you need three types of leftover meat;
chicken, beef and pork. They cut the meat with a trimming machine. The
meat is thrown into cutting plates, like what butchers do with hamburgers.
Chicken trimmings are also added with food starch, salt and ground
mustard.
They put all the meat into a vat and water is sprayed on the meat so all the
ingredients are together and they add the corn syrup to the meat to make it
sweet. The meat is sprayed with more water to blend all the ingredients
together and make it juicier. It moves onto a machine that purees the dogs
and gets rid of the air in it. Long rolls of tubes are stuffed in the stuffing
machine. It purees out a hot dog every 5 inches. Three of the strings of hot
dogs in the basket get connected to make a longer one then it moves to the
racks. It moves into a liquid smoke shower. It’ll add flavour to the dogs as
they bake.
They throw the hotdogs in cold salty water in preparation for packaging. A
machine pulls them out of the bars and onto a conveyer. Then the conveyer
slides into metal containers. The metal container goes into the peeling
machine, inside of the peeling machine there is steam to dry off the hot
dogs. The inspector checks if they are no defects, if there are he throws
them off. The hotdogs move onto a plastic wheel to position the hot dogs for
packaging. Later, it moves onto a factory to pack 10 hot dogs in one
package.
Hots dogs are now ready to be sent to shops. Hot dogs are really interesting
and it is awesome how they made. Now you know how hot dogs are made.

The Megalodon
Jordan 6AH
This shark known as the Megalodon was once the ruler of the deep sea until it was
wiped out into extinction 2.6 million years ago. Today I am going to talk to you about
the Megalodon.
Description:
The Megalodon Shark was the biggest sea creature to ever live, its length was about 62
feet when fully grown, it weighed around 70-100 tons, with massive teeth that could
kill a blue whale with just one bite. The Megalodon had rough grey skin all over, also
the Megalodon and can swim really fast.
Diet:
The Megalodon is massive and can eat really big sea creatures, but the Megalodon likes
to eat whales. Many whales around the world have had their tail bitten off and a
Megalodon tooth has been found in most of the whales so that’s how we know mainly
consist on whales.
Life cycle:
The Megalodon shark is like the normal life cycle of an average shark. The egg starts
and hatches into a pup and then slowly grows into a shark but this shark grows to a
massive shark that is over 62 feet long.
Habitat:
Most people say this creature is extinct but recently scientists found a 62 feet long
shark on the bottom of the ocean. They were doing experiments on other fishes until in
the background they saw a massive shark in the dark depths of the ocean, so scientists
and people say that the Megalodon lives in the bottom of the ocean but keeps moving
around so it doesn’t get caught.
Interesting Facts: Scientist found many Megalodon teeth and body parts and with the
skeleton they remade The Megalodon which can be found at many museums but the
real bones are kept at the back not shown to the public. The Megalodon was the king
of the ocean before it was wiped from extinction or did it get wiped….
What do you think of the Megalodon?

Hey everyone I am Ashley and I live in tropical
Queensland and it is very hot, I LOVE IT. I am a
surfer and I travel all around Queensland entering
the surf competitions such as Australian Kneeboard
Titles, NRMA QL Junior State Surfing Titles,
Australian Surf Festival, just to name a few. My
favourite would probably have to be the NRMA QL
Junior State Surfing Titles because that has the most
competitors and it’s really challenging.
Another hobby of mine is horse riding and dancing. I
dance at Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance in
Queensland and I ride my race horse, The Bowler. He
is one of the biggest 3 year old testers Rosa’s ever
raced in a long time. He lives in Melbourne but comes
to visit my sister and me in Queensland; he has won
over 6 races in a row and has been beaten around 3
times in the syndicate.
In 2014 was last year I travelled to New York and
California to dance, around 10 of us got picked from
my dance school to go. We danced at Disneyland,
Universal Studios, and when I went to New York I
danced at Broadway dance centre and I did a few flash
mobs in Times Square close to where we stayed for our
trip.
I enjoy all of these things and hope to continue them
when I am older…
John and the Jungle
One sunny and fine day, there lived a boy name John and his family.
One day John asked his parents if he could go for a walk. His parents
said “Yes”. So John set off.
While he was walking, John spotted a jungle in the middle of nowhere.
So he walked towards it. As he walked he heard strange noises.
After his scary walk, he made it to the centre of the jungle; he looked
around and saw a huge snake about thirty metres high and twelve
metres wide.
John stared at the snake for ten seconds, and then he ran for his life.
He didn’t know where to go because he was panicking, so he ran
everywhere. John ran so far the snake stopped chasing him.
When he stopped running, John saw a witch’s house with no witches
inside, so John approached slowly. Suddenly something caught John’s
eyes; it was a magic portal that the witches made. So John ran to it so
no one could see him. He jumped in the magic portal and typed where
in where he lived. Then he pressed the button “TELEPORT.”
Ten minutes later, he arrived home. John was safe and sound! That
was one of the scariest walk of John’s life.

NEW YORK BAKERY
It’s the first week of school and I am so excited because it is camp. The year 5
children are walking down a gravel street in Sovereign Hill. We are about to have
dinner before we go to the Blood on the Southern Cross show. I am starving because
we had a long play in the pool and on the jumping pillow. As I walk into the New York
bakery I can smell cleaning products because they have just been used to clean the
tables. I am sitting down and I look around and I see portraits of old- fashioned
people, there is flowery wall paper, tables and chairs and old fashioned bars. As the
waitress came with our food to the table it smells delicious. I have my first spoonful
of spaghetti bolognaise. It is delicious. It needs some chilli to make it better though.
