Dear Colleague:
We live in an informational age where 96% of websites are expository text
and where the majority of reading and writing done by adults is informative.
The Common Core State Standards address the need for students to “read
and comprehend informational text independently and proficiently.” These
standards are exactly what we need to prepare students for college and create
an educated workforce that competes in our global community. I have designed
this seminar to show how you can successfully integrate Informational/Speaking/
Collaborative Standards into meaningful lessons and projects in your classroom.
As an experienced elementary teacher, I have had the opportunity to teach
hundreds of students. My philosophy has been that learning should be an
engaging, educational journey, not just a race to the finish line. As educators,
we face the challenge to make that journey one that is relevant, rigorous and
encourages in‑depth thinking, creativity and communication.
Our classrooms should be filled with questions and inquiry to guide inquisitive
minds. Throughout the day, I will share a wealth of techniques that will make
your students critical, collaborative, inferential, and scientific thinkers when
reading informational/nonfiction text. I will also provide strategies that will
encourage students to question text and points of view.
I am passionate about educating students to use their own minds, think clearly
and deeply, gain knowledge, use judgment, support decisions, and push
their limits. I would like to invite you to a fast‑paced day filled with engaging
lessons and activities that you can use with your students to meet the rigorous
Common Core State Standards for informational reading.
Throughout the day,
Sincerely,
I will share a wealth of
techniques that will make
your students critical,
collaborative, inferential,
and scientific thinkers when
reading informational text.”
