Public comments
Paul Zipser, Katy Baty, Shane Otley, Emily Glascock and Jan Kolar commented on their dismay that
parents and family members were turned away from attending the Halloween parties at Slater
Elementary because they weren’t on the approved volunteer list.
Superintendent Steve Quick said he’d been unaware that open invitations had been sent home with
students until the day of the party. The open invitations heightened concerns in terms of safety and
logistics. The elementary principal will be working with her leadership team and district administrators to
come up with procedures regarding visitors in the schools that will address student safety while allowing
parent participation in classroom events.

Slater Elementary, Hines Middle School and Burns High School.
10.
School Reports
a. Henry L. Slater Elementary – Principal Sarika Mosley
b. Hines Middle School – Principal Dave Robinson
Fall Sports: HMS had a successful fall sports program. Our football team had a winning season and our
8th grade volleyball players only lost one match and placed second at a tournament in Bend against
many large middle school teams. Cross country runners placed well at the District meet. Our eighth
grade boys’ team won first place. Individual awards include three second places and a third place.
Leadership Class: Our kids in leadership are doing a great job this year planning and facilitating two
assemblies with awards, music, performances and games. They have organized two fun and safe
dances as well. Leadership students have been busy with projects around the school, cleaning and
painting to keep our beautiful old building looking good.
Student-led Conferences (SLCs): Students and teachers are busy preparing for SLCs on November 22nd
and 23rd. Students will share and explain their hard work and learning to their parents and celebrate their
successes. This is a great way for students to reflect on their learning and update their parents on their
progress.
2015-2016 School Report Card: Hines Middle School students scored just slightly below the state
average in language arts and above the state average for schools similar to ours. In science, Hines
students scored 22 percentage points higher than the state average!
We will have a special focus on mathematics this year. Our math scores were 9 percentage points
below the state average. We have begun implementing new teaching strategies, new curriculum and
assessments for instruction that we believe will significantly improve math instruction and learning this
year.
Two subgroups that will also receive special attention this year are students from low-income households
and our students with disabilities.
c. Burns High School – Principal Dave Goetz
Mr. Goetz added that ParentVue in Synergy is up and running and that all senior transcripts have now
been entered into the program. BHS is working on transcripts for students in grades 9-11.
d. Monroe – Principal Chandra Ferguson
e. Student Services Programs/SLC – Director Steve Jones
Steve Jones explained the testing procedures for students with significant cognitive disabilities. These
test scores are measured separately and don’t affect the overall scores on the School Report Card.
Mr. Jones said there are currently 6 students in the Structured Learning Center, 5 of these are from
Eastern Oregon Academy. There have been 3 to 4 EOA students attending BHS this year.
11.
Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent Steve Quick thanked the administrators for the time they spend investing in their
students. The principals are regularly in the classrooms, working hard to make a difference.
Amy Smith turned in her resignation as HMS cross country coach at the end of the season.
Mr. Quick attended the Positive Youth Initiative meeting last week where community members and
students met to brainstorm ideas to help our youth become successful. This is the second meeting and
was initiated by the High Desert Partnership.
Mr. Quick attended safety trainings, which were free to our district and supported by PACE, where the
district works with law enforcement to provide better protection for our schools. These trainings, which
includes “Active Shooter”, will take place in all 3 schools.
There is no regular board meeting in December.

BOARD REQUESTS & REPORTS
Doug Gunderson said he experienced an event while attending the State football playoffs in Corvallis
that demonstrated the good will and caring of people in our state. While the boys were eating at a
restaurant in Albany, a woman came over and placed a $100 bill on the table and said it was for the
boys. When Coach Graham asked her about it she said her name was Vivian, she was from Lebanon,
and just wanted to help the boys.
