World History - Kelemen – 2016 Unit 3: Political Revolutions What factors can spark a violent political revolution? What makes a political revolution a success or a failure? As belief in reason and logic flourished during the Enlightenment, monarchs who ruled across the world were confronted with growing pressure to reform their political systems by limiting their absolute power and expanding the rights of their citizens. Not surprisingly, these kings resisted sharing power with the people and their stubbornness led to many violent revolutions and new forms of government in Europe, North America and South America. . The Enlightenment ideas of natural human rights and democratic government sparked political revolutions that had varying levels of success. During this unit, we will explore the common challenge of the idealistic words of revolutionary leaders often not translating into stable governments and liberty for all people. So, we will also try to assess what makes a political revolutions a success or a failure and consider how this relates to our world today.
