IN MEMORIUM, LEO WEITZMAN
Leo Weitzman died on Dec. 8, 2016, a week shy of his 73rd birthday. He was born
exactly one day before me, but in a vastly different world. He was born in Siberia
after his parents escaped from Poland and the Nazis, whereas I was born a few miles
from Wrigley Field (so, who suffered the most over the years?). Like many refugees,
he and his family spent a few years after WWII in Displacement camps, before
immigrating to the US. He grew up in the NYC area, where he graduated from
Brooklyn Tech High School and Cooper Union College. He then pursued an MS in
Chemical Engineering and came to Purdue University. I’m told by his college friends
that he hadn’t learned to drive a car while in New York, so before leaving, he
obtained a driver’s license and a car. Unfortunately, say these sources, he couldn’t
drive very well! Fortunately, all survived this deficiency and he soon met Judy
Axelrod, the daughter of a prominent Purdue biochemist, Barney Axelrod and his wife
Sara, and a long-time resident of the area. They met at Purdue Hillel and were married at Hillel some 46
years ago. Fortunately, the type of engineering that Leo performed in his professional life could be
centered almost anywhere. So, it was quite natural that they eventually returned to West Lafayette in
the early 1990s.
Obviously, the bond between Leo and Judy and Hillel was real and very strong. Once they settled into
town, they recognized that Hillel needed to be rejuvenated now that Rabbi Engel had retired. They first
identified and consolidated all the small bank accounts that Rabbi Engel had squirreled away and this
became the seed money to help hire a professional director. They then developed the Board of Directors
and convinced people from throughout the area and state to serve on this Board. They were quietly
persistent and drew many into the Hillel world, some for the first time. This led to a renaissance in Hillel’s
interaction with major groups, such as the Jewish Federation of Greater Lafayette, the Jewish Federation
of Indianapolis and the Ohio Valley Consortium, that have provided significant funds towards Hillel’s annual
operating budget. Throughout the last 25 years, Leo has always kept an eye on the budget, much of the
time as Treasurer.
Leo was also interested in the building and the need to upgrade the facilities. One of his last efforts
on behalf of Hillel was to donate a significant sum to establish the Leo and Judy Weitzman Building
Fund for Hillel to be used for building maintenance, or an extensive renovation or even the construction
of a new building on the current site. Many of us have joined this effort and Leo’s request was that
donations be made in his honor to this fund. It is clear that the success of Hillel over the last generation
is due, in large measure, to the efforts of Leo and Judy, and their hope is that this Fund will establish a
foundation for success well into the future. Leo will be sorely missed, but his spirit will live on in the
activities of many Jewish students at Purdue.
By Philip Schlossberg:
A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR
We are half way through the spring semester with Purim, Spring Break right around the
corner, and Passover fast approaching. First there are a few activities to brag about;
December orientations for the TAGLIT: BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL: Hillel Trip, in which Purdue had a
record 39 students that went to Israel. 27 went on the Hillel bus with me and 12 on various
other Birthright trips. The building full of students for the nightly study breaks/hours during
finals. A low point of the semester was the untimely passing of our Treasurer Leo Weitzman.
Leo was a big part of the running of the financial side of Hillel and nice source of Hillel history. He never
failed to make me feel better about our finances no matter the deficit we faced…which usually worked out
just fine in the end as he predicted. He will be missed by all, but his commitment to Purdue Hillel will
always live on.

Student Groups & Programs
(Continued from Page 1)
A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR
The number of students attending programs continues to grow. If program participation continues, I
expect we will surpass the 15-16 school year number of students attending our weekly programs (Bagel
Break, Shabbat Services, Torah Study & Shabbat dinners). These are very exciting times at Purdue Hillel!
The start of a new semester opened with stories of Israel & Winter Break at the first Bagel Break. Our
January programs included Torah Study, now on Friday afternoon before services, Thursdays “Coffee with
Philip in the Union”, and monthly visits by Inbar Nadir, our community Shalicha. Everyone enjoyed the Tu
B’Shevat Seder/Shabbat and we had the honor of hosting the Annual Purim Carnival in early March. I am
thrilled to see what ICAP and GAPP have planned for the rest of the year as well.
The activities are great and we continue to make sure that Purdue Hillel is the home for Jewish life at
Purdue as we build an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning and Israel, with and for, our community
every day. Fortunately, a commitment to the Jewish experience is different for everyone and this allows
us to be creative in how we engage students at Purdue. We are excited and I am looking forward to the
final seven weeks of the semester including, hamentashen baking, a GAPP pot-luck 2nd Seder, and
Shabbat. I am also looking forward to the Passover Holiday and programs by our Shaliachs, and many
other spring activities, and of course, providing space and study breaks during Finals Week.
Everything we do is based upon the support and guidance of our Board and the financial support of
our generous donors. On behalf of the students and the Board, I would like to give you my sincerest
thanks and gratitude for making this all possible. I encourage you to join us and help us provide the
students of Purdue Hillel with the tools to build an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning, and Israel
and to inspire every Jewish student at Purdue University with meaningful Jewish experiences.
By Lilly Steiner:
BIRTHRIGHT: TRIP OF A LIFETIME
Not many people can say they went to Israel with 40 of their closest
friends over winter break. But I can! Birthright was an amazing experience
that allowed me to deepen my friendships with Purdue Hillel students, as well
as develop new friendships with students from universities in North Texas, all
while exploring the land of Israel. Everything from the students, the tour
guide, and the Israeli soldiers who joined our bus as participants, to late night
reflection sessions, food, and beautiful scenery, those 10 days I spent in
Israel are days I will surely never forget.
Our trip overlapped with a couple days of Hannukah, and it was a pretty
special experience to be in Israel during the holiday. We learned a lot about
the history and traditions that are celebrated in Israel, and were able to
experience, firsthand, how those are similar to and different from the ways
we celebrate in the States.
My favorite memory from my Birthright trip was stargazing in the Negev
Shira Arkabi, Lilly Steiner,
when we spent a night in Bedouin tents. I had always heard such fantastic
Rachel Steiner & Jake Merel
stories about stargazing in the desert, so I was very excited when I finally
at Mt Herzl in Jerusalem
had the opportunity to try it for myself. Just being in the desert, as far away
from sound and light as possible, looking at the stars and taking in the atmosphere was just an incredible
experience!
I made so many memories on Birthright this winter, and I am so grateful for the friendships the trip was
able to help me build. All of the pictures I took, the stories I heard, and funny memories I made will surely
last a lifetime. Thank you Bus 1371 for a phenomenal 10 days! #1948

ZETA BETA TAU
As the year is picking up speed, ZBT has been busy continuing our
success as a chapter. After spring recruitment, we had record breaking
numbers for the year and initiated 67 new men into the fraternity. They
are a great addition to the chapter and we can’t wait to see how they
improve the Alpha-Alpha chapter in the future.
More recently, our executive board, along with a few other brothers,
attended ZBT’s national conference, Dover Days, at the U. of Illinois. The
conference is a gathering of brothers from across the nation. Guest
speakers touch on topics that our fraternity holds close such as
philanthropy, new member recruitment, heritage, and a variety of other
topics. We are looking forward to continuing a great year.

ALPHA EPSILON PI
The Purdue chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi has continued to be
a strong Jewish organization on and off campus. Our chapter
has reached an astonishing 44 members, with new members on
the way, and is continuing to grow every year. As one of the
few Jewish organizations on campus, our brothers are dedicated
to getting involved on campus and helping out the community.
We are proud to have brothers who are active in/with Jewish
life on campus. We feel strongly about maintaining our Jewish
identity here on campus and we strive to provide Jewish
experiences for all of our members, as well as other students at
Purdue. AEPi strives to get involved with the Purdue Greek
community as well. The chapter participated in Zeta Tau Alpha’s
Big Man On Campus philanthropy event which raised over
$100,000 towards the fight against breast cancer. We will also
be participating in a dog adoption fair and raising money for
AEPi’s national philanthropy this semester. We’re really excited
to continue growing and contributing to the Jewish, Greek,
student, and local communities here on Purdue’s campus.

We say Shabbat is the festive time at Hillel and
Shabbat dinner is no exception. Although the
experience is incalculable, the food, supplies & staff
(time) costs money! With the generous sponsorship
of people supportive of the Jewish campus
community we are committed to keeping the costs
to student at only $4 per meal per person - even
though the CORE grant from National Hillel ended
over six years ago (students unable to pay may
contact the Director in advance.) In the 16-17
academic year Hillel will be serving 28 Shabbat
dinners (plus a High Holiday dinners). At $4 each it
is $112 per person for a year of Shabbat dinners.
Hillel is pleased to offer a DiSH (Dining on Shabbat
at Hillel) Shabbat Dinner discount of $90 for the
year of Shabbat meals and $48 per semester. The
discount, and paying in advance, will prevent a
student from having to pay weekly.
Sponsorship donations and DiSH fees are
independent costs. Sponsorship donations do not
take the place of DiSH fees, however, a student
honored by a Sponsorship, and those persons
donating the funds for the Sponsorship, would
receive that meal free of charge. To pay for DiSH,
