AAS GRADE 2 2015-2016 Ms. Rettmann 2015-2016 marks my thirteenth year of teaching and my third year at AAS SP. I formerly taught Grade 2 and Kindergarten at AAS Moscow, Grade 5 at AAS St. Petersburg and English as a Second Language (ESL) in elementary and high schools in the United States. Sharing my love of literature with students is one of my favorite things about being a teacher. I also enjoy music so get ready kids…we’re going to dance and sing! Outside of school, I spend time traveling and even more time planning upcoming travel experiences. I also enjoy walking in St Petersburg and attending ballets. Mr. Nick I’ve been teaching at AAS SP since 2010. I’m looking forward to my fourth year working as a teacher assistant in Grade 2. I appreciate the opportunity to interact with students from around the word and I value the atmosphere of diversity and openmindedness that I associate with AAS SP. This summer I earned my international teaching certificate. I am fond of natural science and art and will gladly share some of my knowledge with the kids! My hobbies are reading, playing guitar, bike riding, camping and rock climbing. 2 AAS GRADE 2 2015-2016 What will students learn in Grade 2? Each year of school denotes a period of physical, cognitive and emotional growth in the life of a child. Students enter Grade 2 with two or more years of traditional schooling and are ready to apply their knowledge and abilities to new challenges. standards is the Reading and Writing Workshop Model. Students spend time reading and writing with teacher guidance and feedback. They also focus on word study and are given ample opportunities to practice speaking and listening using academic language. At AAS SP, we strive to create an optimal learning experience for all students. Instruction and assessment is aligned with the Common Core State Standards in language arts and mathematics. At times, students need extra support to reach these standards and at other times, students are ready for challenges beyond the grade level learning targets. The mathematics program AAS SP has adopted is Everyday Mathematics. Students will engage in rigorous problem solving and computation activities each day. For more information about standards and the elementary curriculum, please plan to attend our Back to School Night on Thursday, September 3. The curricular framework used for helping children meet and surpass the language arts Social and Emotional Development Happy kids are productive kids. We know from research, as well as common sense, that kids who feel accepted and respected by their peers and teachers are more likely to be academically successful. In Grade 2, we will spend time building community, learning and practicing behavior expectations and writing a set of rules that will allow all students to do their best. The basis for this approach to social curriculum, classroom management and discipline is Responsive Classroom. We will discuss social and emotional development at the Back to School Night on September 3. 3
