The Buzz - Reynella Football Club

The Buzz
Volume 1
29th August 2013
Well here we go. Finals are upon us. What a great time of the year! It’s
this time of the year that I get quite jealous of our players. I would give
anything to be able to still be playing and contesting finals football.
There are few things better than running out to play in a final.
Hopefully the Black and White Army will SWARM all over Marion
Oval to support our Under 14’s, 16’s, B’s and A’s on Saturday and Christies Beach Bice Oval on Sunday to cheer on our Under 18’s.
Everyone please remember that we are all representing our great Club
whether we are playing, coaching, running, timekeeping etc or just
supporting. Our Club will be judged on the conduct of our worst behaved representative. Win or lose we should conduct ourselves with
dignity and humility.
During the finals series the centre square is off limits to all spectators
and personnel. This is to provide a safe area for the umpires, a requirement of the Community Football League following some recent nasty
incidents in other leagues.
Team Captains are the only persons permitted to approach the umpires
during breaks.
Remember that umpires are only human (hard to believe, I know) but if
they are abused by players and supporters, that team will be unlikely to
benefit in the next 50/50 decision that the umpire will call.
No alcohol is to be taken onto the oval at anytime.
Enjoy the finals. This time is a great reward for all of the hard work by
the players, support staff and committee over the course of the year.
Barrack hard. Play hard. Enjoy (hopefully) improved weather conditions and get back to the Club after the games.
Good luck. Have fun.
If you have any suggestions about what you would like to see in
future editions I would love to hear them.

A big thanks to all the Under16 Squad for playing and supporting the whites throughout the year. The idea of combining two sides is
difficult for some to understand but "YOU" all made it a success. Thanks to Craig and Tim for their support throughout the year. Thanks
to Wes Thompson, Shaun Westphalen, Tim Peake and all the parents for chipping in week in week out. A special thanks to Gianni for
coming down to support the Whites in their last game. The biggest thanks goes to our President Brian Proctor and Hackham President
Graham Thompson for making it all happen. We had some losses but along the way we had some good wins. Above all thanks boys for
committing to our motto "WE NEVER GAVE IN". You are all a credit to the club, the league, your parents and to the great game it is.

Wes Green 26/9/1927 — 18/8/2013
Wes was born at Reynella on 26th September 1927 and lived at Happy Valley and Reynella for most of his life.
He married Valma in 1950 and had two children, Graeme and Lynnette.
He had four grand-children and six great-grand-children.
Wes played football, tennis and cricket for Reynella and is a life member of the Reynella Football and Cricket Clubs
and the Southern Football League. Wes was inducted into the SFL Hall of Fame due mainly for his involvement as a
Delegate and a League Selector.
Wes is remembered, not only for his sporting involvement but also for his sense of humour and pranks played on
team-mates, family (especially grand-children and great-grand-children) and the general public.
He once tied a piece of string around a dead snake and pulled it behind him on to the Glenelg tram.
Another time he put a sheet of glass over the top of a neighbours chimney, filling the house with smoke.
Wes, until recent times, keenly watched his beloved Wineflies junior and senior teams play and had a good eye for
talent. He often raved about a small young blonde haired kid running around in the juniors, saying that he was
going to be a very good player. That player, Chris Bradwell, has proven Wes to be a very good judge.

Attention all Wineflies
Our Sponsors are very important to the Club.
Please support our sponsors wherever possible .
When you buy their products or use their services, please tell them that you are a Winefly.
By doing so our sponsor will see that their monies are being well spent and that they are getting
a return on their investment in us.
Some sponsors may give you a discount or a “Spotters Fee” to the Club.
Ex-Player/Volunteer/Supporter Profile
Name: Brian Cooper
Nickname: Coops and a few of the older faces will know me as Bondage
How did you get Nickname?: Coops is just a play on Cooper but Bondage came from when I was playing under 16’s cricket for Reynella back in the early 90’s. All it was is that I was bowling one day and had some coins
in my pocket and they kept jingling when I was running in. One of the guys said I had chains in my pocket.
Then it went out of control. I think it was Trino. Another former Winefly. He was a funny
When did you come to Reynella?:
It would have been 1992 and I played in an under 17’s premiership
under Boyd Austin.
Why did you come to Reynella?: I ended up playing cricket and football at Reynella because I met the great
man Jim Keough. I even spent time living with him and his lovely wife Colleen when I first moved out of home.
Where were you before coming to Reynella?:I lived and played footy in a town called Cobram in country Victoria. Birth place of Buddha Hocking.
Family: Wife/Children:I am married to Adele and I have 3 daughters Jessica 4 Grace 2 & Chloe 1
What do you do for a crust?:
I work in the rail industry as a Project/Maintenance Planner
Who’s your favourite sportsperson?: Joel Selwood. I love the way he plays.
Do you have any heroes?: Just Milo
Who has influenced you most in life/sport?: Probably my Dad
Why?:
When I was younger he was my first footy coach. I remember when I was younger he thought I
was a bit soft and told me to push the rules until the umpire gave a free kick. Then you should know where the
limit is. And there is a difference between getting hurt and getting injured. If you play properly you get hurt
every game.
What would you choose as your last meal, 3 Courses?: Definitely Garlic Prawns for entrée. Roast pork for
main. Then probably Garlic prawns again for dessert. I love garlic Prawns!
Best footballer that you have seen at RFC?: Would have to be Steve Prescott. His balance and being able to
know where to be and the way he handles and uses the ball in the wet weather. Also he has an unbelievable
knack of whacking people without being seen.
Best footballer that you have seen in SFL?: A few great players have come and gone but I think to be
classed as a SFL footballer you need to spend several years playing here. So once again I would have to say
Steve Prescott. He was also one of the funniest guys out there. Bit of a strange cat though.
Best footballer that you have seen at AFL?: Would have to be either G. Ablett Snr or G. Ablett Jr. It is hard to
pick. Senior did more freaky things but Junior just does everything well and in every game.
Best moments in sport for you?: Probably the 97 B Grade premiership captain under Chris Lock and the 2006
B grade premiership under Kim Graetz when we beat Morphett Vale because nobody gave us a chance.
What music & artists/bands do you like?:
I like all sorts of stuff. Mostly alternative like early Muse, British
India, The Saints, Dallas Crane, Gotye, The Velvet Underground & White Stripes
If you could build an ideal woman what bits would you borrow from which celebrities?: I would take the
cooking ability of Nigella Lawson, the house keeping ability of Alice from The Brady
Bunch, the libido of Jenna Jameson and the body of Jessica Alba.
If someone was to make a film of your life what would the film title be and who
would you like to play you in the film?: I would call the film “Time to grow up” and it
would star Milo because he is the best looking guy at the club!
Favourite Quote/s?: If you are not living on the edge you are taking up too much
space.
The most famous person that you have met: Would have to be Milo.
What celebrity (alive or dead) would you most want to meet? Someone like Winston
Churchill to have a talk about how things were done back in the day!
