NXP Semiconductors Reduces Database by 50%, Migrates

1
“Since we run SAP enterprise resource planning on Oracle Database, Oracle GoldenGate was the
perfect solution for our migration, along with the online migration technology offered by Oracle
Advanced Customer Support Services. It allowed us to start preparing for this important migra
tion, only a few months after initial contact with Oracle. And indeed, we achieved our goals in a
very short timeframe with minimal downtime for the SAP system, while reducing the size of
our target database by 50%.”

NXP Semiconductors N.V. is a global semi
conductor company with operations in more than
25 countries. Founded in 2006 and formerly a
division of Philips, the company provides high
performance, mixed-signal, and standard product
solutions that use its leading expertise in radio
frequency, analog, power management, interface,
security, and digital processing. These innovations
are used in a wide range of automotive, identifi
cation, wireless infrastructure, lighting, industrial,
mobile, consumer, and computing applications.
NXP invests more than US$550 million per year
in research and development and has approximately
11,000 issued and pending patents.
NXP operated SAP enterprise resource planning
(ERP) and Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition
10g. The company had scheduled a data center
migration with change of hardware and operating
system, and upgrades for the database and SAP
ERP. Nevertheless, using traditional approaches
with native SAP tools (r3load), it would have
taken approximately 20 hours to migrate 7.5-tera
bytes (TB) of SAP application data stored in
Oracle Databases. As a 24/7 manufacturer of elec
tronic products used in automotive, lighting, aero
space, computing, and many other applications
and industries—such as chips, sensors, and
diodes—NXP needed to keep the SAP systems
up-and-running, with only minimal downtime
during migration because business processes
would otherwise have been interrupted.
Upgrading to Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition
11g based on proven Oracle methods and using
O2O (Oracle-to-Oracle) Transition Services, NXP
estimated that it completed the migration twice as
fast as it would have using native SAP tools. It
also reduced the required storage space for the
company’s SAP application data by approximately
50%, while shortening total database downtime
from hours to minutes.
Challenges
• Migrate a complete data center with change of
hardware and operating system, upgrades of the
database, and SAP ERP within less than eight
hours downtime to avoid interrupting business
processes, like shipments of the company’s 24/7
production, which includes tens of thousands of
electronic products used in automotive, lighting,
aerospace, computing, and many other industries
• Migrate 7.5-TB of SAP application data to
Oracle Database 11g within the scheduled
down-time of a few hours—impossible to realize
using native SAP tools (r3load), which would
have required approximately 12 hours for the
migration
• Reduce storage costs associated with SAP
application data and free IT resources required
to maintain it
O r a c l e O 2 O – N X P S e m i c o n d u c t o r s N . V.
• Upgraded to Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition
11g, based on proven Oracle methods with very
high parallelization, automatic scheduling soft
ware, and validation, using O2O Transition
Services to complete all migrations from the
source to the target database within the scheduled
down-time of a few hours
Solutions
• Upgraded to Oracle Database, Enterprise
Edition 11g, based on proven Oracle methods
with very high parallelization, automatic sche
duling software, and validation, using O2O
Transition Services to complete all migrations
from the source to the target database within
the scheduled down-time of a few hours
• Benefitted from the expertise of Oracle Advanced
Customer Support Services to perform an Oracle
Triple-O migration, consisting of a first migration
using O2O and the application of deltas to the
target database with Oracle GoldenGate
• Used Oracle GoldenGate to log all modifications
that were applied to the source database while
the migration was running and transfer them
to the target database (Oracle Triple-O)
• Estimated that NXP completed the migration
twice as fast as it would have using native SAP
tools, obviating the need to shut down the
system for a longer period, which would have
interrupted shipments
• Automated the transfer of large SAP tables over
internal 10 gigabit network connections at very
high speeds using automated scheduling services
• Deployed Oracle Advanced Compression to
reduce the required storage space for the com
pany’s SAP application data by approximately
50%—5-TB less than before the upgrade and
migration—to save more than US$70.000 per
year by reducing data storage requirements
• Reduced time spent and central processing unit
overhead during migration with Oracle Advanced
Compression, using dump files to transfer small
SAP tables of up to 50 megabytes
2
• Experienced downtime of less than 3 hours, re
quired for validation of the migration, minimizing
business process interruptions in producing tens
of thousands of electronic products
Why Oracle
“We did not even consider other suppliers when
preparing for this project. This was due, in part,
to the short-term schedule, but also to the excellent
relations between NXP and Oracle, and the fact
that O2O Transition Services are available for all
operating systems and are fully hardware-independ
ent–a key benefit for this project,” said Marion
Fokkinga.
