Two Hundred and Ninety Seven Flood Affected Families Receive
Emergency Shelter Support in Shangel Tobay, North Darfur.
PRESS RELEASE
1st August 2016 - IOM Sudan distributed Improved Emergency Shelters and
Non Food Items to 297 vulnerable families whose homes were completely
destroyed by floods in Dar El Salam locality’s Shangel Tobay, North Darfur to
continue its assistance to people affected by floods in the area.
Distributed relief items consisted of 297 locally produced and
environmentally friendly improved emergency shelters, 297 plastic
tarpaulins, 594 sleeping mats, 594 blankets, 297 jerry cans and 297 kitchen
sets.
Heavy rainfall on July 14th and 15th caused flash floods in Nifasha and Shadad
IDP camps in Shangel Tobay, North Darfur. At the request of North Darfur’s
Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) and the Area Humanitarian Country
Team (AHCT), an IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) team was
deployed to assess the situation, evaluate the damage and register the
affected population through door-to-door assessments.
The DTM team identified a total of 360 houses (hosting 1, 900 individuals) as negatively affected by flash floods,
of which 297 houses were identified as fully destroyed. Notably 1,026 of the 1,900 affected individuals (54%) of
the affected population were identified as minors (under the age of 18). Upon sharing the results of the
assessment with partners, the Non Food Items sector lead requested IOM’s support to provide assistance to the
affected population.
Shangel Tobay is one of three administrative units in Dar el Salam locality, located approximately 80 km south
of El Fasher town, North Darfur State. There are three IDP camps in Shangel Tobay: Nifasha, Shadad and Um
Deraisay, hosting a total of 28,627 individuals (IOM-DTM database and Population Figures Working Group, 2016)
During the distribution ceremony held in El Fasher town on the 28th July, the Minister of Urban Planning and
Public Utilities/Head of State Civil Defense Committee General Mohamed Kamal El Din Abo Shouk, spoke of his
appreciation of the efforts and coordination done between the Government of Sudan, the emergency
committee, IOM, humanitarian organizations and the HAC in providing much needed assistance to flood affected
populations. Also present in the ceremony were the North Darfur HAC Commissioner, Dar El Salam
Commissioner, the Minister of Education and Minister of Health for North Darfur, who all thanked IOM,
Humanitarian organizations and the generous contribution from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian
Aid Operations (ECHO) for making the provision of ES/NFI assistance possible.
In North Darfur, IOM has been appointed by HAC as focal point for flood situational reporting which is shared
with partners such as OCHA for further distribution. To date, IOM has shared 138 flood situational reports with
OCHA and undertaken two damage assessment and registration of affected populations which has resulted in
the subsequent provision of life-saving shelter assistance.
