® Themes for February Hearts and Hugs – Information about hearts and symbols of Valentine’s Day will be shared. The children will be encouraged to find special ways to show their loved ones they care. All Kinds of Opposites – Learn all about opposites with some fun activities that examine how two things can be very different. Large and small, on and off, hot and cold, and fast and slow. Can the children come up with others? Activities f or Ho m e! • If possible, have your child help you prepare cards or treats to share with friends and relatives for Valentine’s Day. Visit with your child about each special person as you are creating his or her gift. • February is Children’s National Dental Health Month. Encourage your child to brush at least twice a day. It is recommended that toothpaste not be used until the age of two years, and only an amount the size of a pea is needed. Introduce flossing and rinsing if your child is not already familiar with them. Encourage your family to choose healthy snacks. • Point out opposites throughout the day as you notice them. Doors can be open or closed. The temperature can be warm or cold. Snacks may be sweet or salty. Try to find opposites that can be experienced with all the senses. Act out opposites. Practice being quiet and loud while clapping, stomping, talking, or singing. Open and close hands, eyes, and mouths. Walk, run, dance, and hop fast and slow. • February is American Heart Month. The American Heart Association recommends that adults exercise for 30 minutes at least three to four times a week. Involve your child in physical activity. Go for walks or ride a bike. Play music and hold a family dance party in your living room. Allow your child to help plan meal or snack menus that include a food item from each of the healthy food groups. Habits start at an early age. Make each habit a healthy one! Valentine Smoothies Ingredients: 3/4 cup plain or vanilla yogurt or milk 2 ripe bananas, cut into chunks 10 oz. fresh or frozen strawberries 3 Tbs. honey or sugar 1 cup ice Place all ingredients into blender and puree until smooth.
