Research the 1920’s, including wealth, power, poverty, values, morals, and The American
Dream.
Write down all the locations in which the book takes place.
Write down 4 details about each place.
Write down who lives in each place.
Then, begin your essay outlining using the following prompt.
Prompt: Compare and contrast any two places in the novel, explaining how the places differ,
what each place symbolizes, and how each reflects the society of the times and the morals
and values of its inhabitants. Then, choose one character from each location (West Egg, East
Egg, etc.) and explain how they are appropriate for their place in the setting of the novel.
Prove what you say about the places you have selected using direct citations from the book.
Example: The woods in The Scarlet Letter symbolize freedom from Puritan Society. For
example, Hester states to Dimmesdale, “The only place we can be ourselves is here, in
the forest.”
The essay must be in MLA format (double spaced, 12 pt font, Calibri, or Times New Roman.
