Participles
A participle is a verb, usually ending in -ing or -ed. Sometimes a
participle plays the role of an adjective in a sentence. When you
diagram a sentence with a participle acting as an adjective, you
draw a slanted line and a straight line underneath the word or
phrase the participle is modifying. You write the participle on a slant
going across the slanted and straight line.

The crying baby annoyed the airplane passengers.
