SHOUT -OUT to MENTORS -Part XI- Monsignor Mike Schmied Ever since I first met Fr. Mike Schmied, I was touched by his prophetic witness. I first met Mike in 1981, he was on the vocation advisory board of the diocese. As part of my acceptance into the diocese as a seminarian, I was interviewed by him, Brother Cos Rubencamp and Sister Theresa Kaine. At that time Mike served as pastor to a mostly African -American Catholic Parish called St. Elizabeth’s in Richmond. He also had a connection with the Catholic School attached to Holy Rosary in the same area. Visiting Saint Elizabeth Church, I could see that the people loved him and he-them. The mutual love and concern transcended the racial differences. He was someone who I wanted to be like. I later found him to be very courageous and prophetic when it came to peace and nuclear disarmament. One time he was visited by Bishop Sullivan and Father Dan Berrigan. When asked about how to not to let criticism of convictions get to you he responded, "Jimmy, you need to transcend that stuff." He visited trouble spots in Latin America in the late 1980s, like El Salvador and Nicaragua, to be in touch with the oppressed in those areas. Of course, learning almost perfecting Spanish was right around the corner. Again the mutual love and care with Hispanic people transcended racial difference. Mike was one of my inspirations for learning the Spanish language and working with the people from Latin America, although I would never do it as well as him. Some priests talk about being in solidarity with the poor. Fr. Mike Schmied walked the talk. He was made a monsignor in the 1990s but was very unassuming about his new title. The Hispanic people of the Richmond Diocese were proud however, to have him lead the new apostolate. A real heart for the poor and a big heart that embraces all of God's people, l am grateful for Mike, every time I try to celebrate missa en Espanola at Holy Cross. We are providing the Second Helping Luncheon on March 29th at the First Presbyterian Church in Altavista. It will be a box lunch.
