Activity 1: Key ideas and terms
Go over the ‘RPA’ PowerPoint which provides the key points and terms they will need to
grasp before the performance. This is intended to be self explanatory.
Activity 2: RPA Loop
2. Attempt the RPA Loop.
a. Give out the questions and answers randomly so each child has a question and
an answer.
b. Depending on numbers some may only have one or the other.
c. So long as they do not have the question and answer to the same question!
d. Start with the green question. The pupil who has the answer to the green
question reads it out, then reads out their question, and so on…
10 mins
Repeat exercise to see if they can beat the time!
Activity 3: Give out RPA factsheet
1. Read through front page. Any questions? Anything surprise you?
2. Read through conversation between two suns.
3. Complete a diamond 9 using the cards. Choose the best 9 reasons for valuing
qualifications, then level them to form a diamond shape: best reason at top, then two
second reasons; then 3, 2 then 1- to make a diamond. Don’t cheat and put more than
1;2; 3;2;1
4. Plenary to diamond 9: Discuss their reasons. Which did they think were most important
and why? Emphasize that what they do in school is central to their future and their
journey/progression through the qualification levels and career. The emphasis is that
these are their qualifications - not the schools or their teachers. It is a question of
ownership.
5. Optional: To underline this it might be useful to show a short segment from the NEET
DVD. The DVD shows the experiences of a group of young people from Wiltshire who
became NEET.
3.25-6.23 What it’s like to be NEET
19.52-22.09 The key part is at 19.50 minutes, about how they would have been different
at school.
