There are three categories of giving, including contributions to the annual Chautauqua Fund, endowment, and capital projects and other programs. All Chautauqua Fund gifts are used in the annual operating budget of the Institution to support the full range of programming Chautauqua offers. These funds underpin a full range of budgeted activities, and are transferred in their entirety to the Institution each calendar year. Gifts to the endowment are made to the Foundation and transferred to the Institution according to the spending policy for the permanent endowment and the terms of the gift. Endowments are managed within the Foundation’s fiscal year, and a full report of activities can be found in the Foundation’s annual report, published each August and available online at ciweb.org/downloads. Following community-wide conversations conducted over three years, Chautauqua’s Board of Trustees crafted a strategic plan for the Institution reaching to the year 2018. The plan seeks to sustainably deliver the Chautauqua experience over time at the highest quality, while welcoming more individuals and families to become part of the fabric of this community. The Promise Campaign, begun in 2011, is providing unprecedented investments in Chautauqua’s programs and facilities according to the strategic plan’s central values and objectives. $0 10M 20M 30M 40M Over the past five years—thanks to generous philanthropy and participation of thousands of individuals and families—the Promise Campaign has garnered more support than any past fundraising endeavor in Chautauqua’s history. At 95% of the way toward an overall goal of $98.2 million, gifts to the Promise Campaign are close to exceeding funds raised in the Idea (2003–2007) and Renewal (1997–2001) campaigns combined.
