Trowbridge’s path to success
Kingston runner
got itch from
bond with dad
“I think this year can be his year to be a league
and/or Section 9 champ,’’
By Ken McMillan
was really tough, but it gave
me a great base (of training)
for freshman year.’’
Now a senior, Trowbridge was a top-four title
contender in a competitive cross country season,
placing third at the Orange
County Interscholastic
Athletic Association championships and fourth in the
Section 9 Class A meet.
He was the No. 2 finisher
among Section 9 runners at
the state meet (20th overall),
Federation meet (14th) and
Nike regional (25th).
Trowbridge’s thoughts
now turn to track and
field, where he is a stronger
competitor as the indoor
season gets underway. He
has his sights set on winning at 3,200 meters and
possibly 1,600 at the county
and sectional meets. A
three-time state qualifier,
Trowbridge has never won
OCIAA or sectional titles.
As a sophomore and junior,
he finished second 10 times
in championship meets and
either third or fourth an
additional seven times in
the 1,600, 3,200 and 3,000
steeplechase.
“I think it’s going to be a
good season,’’ Trowbridge
said. “It will be competitive
at sections and exciting.’’

Warwick: The hurdler ran a
season-best 8.89 seconds.

state meet at 3,000 meters,
and is the defending OCIAA
champ.
Katie Murphy, senior, Cornwall:
The high jumper posted a

Middletown sprint relay: Freshmen De’ja Bowen and Bria
Oatman, and senior Keyana
Zollner need to find a new

to the championship hunt.

Thorr Trowbridge arrived
late to the running scene,
drawn into long fitness runs
with his father, Jorian, in the
summer before his freshman year at Kingston. As
it turned out, dad got into
shape and Thorr developed
into a top-flight distance
runner.
“We would do really long
runs, like 20-plus miles,’’
Trowbridge said. “At first it
was mostly that I wanted to
do something with my dad.
… I thought it would be fun.
Then I really got into it. In
the beginning, of course, it

Chris Carrion, senior, MonroeWoodbury: The long jumper
surpassed 22 feet.
Jahnique Dessaline,
senior, Newburgh: The
sprinting standout ran 6.51
seconds in the 55-meter
dash and is a valuable relay
runner.
Christopher Ebbrell, senior, Pine
Bush: The triple jumper came
up an inch shy of 44 feet.
Brendon Perez, senior, Middletown: He is the defending
OCIAA champion in the triple
jump (44 feet, 5 inches) and
won the OCIAA division and
Section 9 Class A meets.
Troy Zanger, senior, Port Jervis:
The high jumper cleared 6-6
and won the OCIAA division,
OCIAA meet and Section 9
Class A meet titles. Zanger
was sixth at state meet.

Diana Echols, senior, Ellenville:
The weight thrower posted a
season-best of 42-3.

Kingston coach Marcel Lucchese
“I think this year can be
his year to be a league and/
or Section 9 champ,’’ Kingston coach Marcel Lucchese
said. “I think he can be a
state medalist in the 3,200.
His goal, obviously, would
be to medal and who knows
… maybe top three. … For
indoor, if he can get on the
podium (top six) for the
two-mile, that would be a
big accomplishment.’’
Lucchese said he was
impressed with Trowbridge
improving on average 15-20
seconds over his junior year
on each cross country course
he ran this season.
“That makes it a nice way
to finish,’’ Lucchese said.
“Sometimes when you are
at a high level for so many
years, it’s hard for them
to finish off running faster
times. He’s got to feel good
about that.’’
Lucchese said Trowbridge
probably was a bit distracted
during the fall by maintaining a No. 2 academic ranking
in the senior class and narrowing his college choices to
a handful of schools. Trowbridge said Monday that he
is sending his applications
out shortly to Yale, Cornell,
Harvard, Princeton and
Albany.
Trowbridge said he’s not
drawn to the so-called “runner’s high’’ as much as the
head-to-head showdowns.
“I love the competitiveness of it,’’ he said. “It’s such
a fair contest. It’s who trains
the most, who wants it the
most. It’s not like there’s
any weird strategy you can
do. There are no loopholes.
It’s fair, man vs. man. Just
run your heart out.’’
