Message From the Headmaster
2010-2011 Accomplishments
The pages of this report you hold in your hands are another
visible reminder of the reasons we celebrate our school. The
bond shared by every member of the St. Vincent-St. Mary family
is the reason for the success of the school and its students every
year. This past year was exceptional in so many ways, and we all
recognize that the support of our friends and alumni is a huge
component in those accomplishments.
The Class of 2011 was yet another stellar example of young
people reaching their goals. They were accepted into their first
choice college and they received college money in the form of
scholarships and grants, equaling far more than their fair share
and “return” on their investment in STVM. Students did their
part; the faculty and staff did theirs; YOU did your part, and we
thank YOU. Our sense of hope could not be stronger.

• National Merit Scholars - four seniors.
• 3 AP Scholars with Distinction - Criteria: Score an average of 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and achieve a score of 3 or higher on 5 or more of these exams.
• 7 AP Scholars with Honors - Criteria: Score an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and achieve a score of 3 or higher on 4 or more of these exams.
• 7 AP Scholars - Criteria: Score a 3 or higher on 3 or more AP exams.
• National Honor Society - 72 new inductees.
• STVM Academic Letters - 18 STVM students received Academic
“Varsity” Letters.
• Right to Life - STVM awarded “Best Supporting High School.”
• 22 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion installed by The Diocese
of Cleveland.
• Catholic Commission 2010 Bishop William M. Cosgrove Youth Justice Award - STVM student.
• Ohio Academy of Science District Science Fair held at The University of Akron - STVM received the top honor “Outstanding School Award” and 16 students earned a total of 22 special awards advancing to State Science Day competition in Columbus.
• State Science Day - STVM Inquiry Team received the Harold C. Shaw Outstanding School Award and earned over $250,000 in scholarship opportunities and cash awards.
• STVM/The University of Akron Research Experience - 11 students worked with 11 University of Akron Polymer Scientists and Polymer Engineers to develop their science project.
• ABIA Best Medicine Fair held at Inventor’s Hall of Fame in Akron - 7 STVM awardees including top honors for participation in the ABIA Summer Institute.
• 3 STVM rocket teams qualified for Rocket Team National Finals in
Manassas, VA.
• National Security Language Initiative for Youth - STVM student awarded summer scholarship in Russia.
• Model UN Club received “Distinguished Delegations” award at the Hiram Model UN Conference.
• Mock Trial Team received Best Attorney (Plaintiff) and Best Attorney and Best Witness (Defense) during regional competitions.
• Honors Band at The University of Akron - two STVM students selected
to participate.
• Symphonic Band members earned highest scores at State competition.
• Marching Band “Best Overall” at Akron St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
• Governor’s Art Show - 18 student artists recognized at State competition.
• Scholastic Art Competition - 2 Gold Key and 3 Silver Key recipients.
• City of Akron Holocaust contest - 1st place (trip to Washington, D.C.)
2nd place and 5 honorable mentions - the most of any school in the area.
• Outstanding Administrator in Support of Foreign Languages Award - Headmaster David Rathz.
• 2010 Division II OHSAA State Championship - Girls Cross Country Team.
• 2011 Division II OHSAA State Championship - Boys Track & Field Team.
• 2011 Division II OHSAA State Championship - Boys Basketball.
• 2010 Division II OHSAA State Champion Wrestler - individual state champion; 3 additional state qualifiers.
• Track & Field Coach of the Year (Cleveland Plain Dealer) and Coach of the Year (Summit County Touchdown Club) - Dan Lancianese, Head Coach Track & Field and Head Coach Cross Country.
• Coach of the Year (Cleveland Plain Dealer, Summit/Portage Touchdown Club) - Dru Joyce II, Head Coach Boys Basketball.
• STVM Boys Soccer - First Team All Tri-County League, First Team All District, Senior All Star Game.
• College athletic signings - 31 STVM seniors.

The STVM Executive Board reflects on the past fiscal year
and shares insight into STVM and the role that they serve.
Patrick Hart V68 is the Chairman of the STVM Executive Board
Pat has served on the Executive Board since December 2008. Pat graduated from
St. Vincent High School in 1968 and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political
Science from The University of Akron four years later. He earned his law degree from
The University of Akron School of Law in 1975. Following law school, Pat joined the
Akron Prosecutor’s Office in 1976 and went into the private practice of law in 1980.
Pat is a partner with the law firm, The Scanlon Group Co., L.P.A. Over the years, Pat has been active in professional and community service
organizations. In years past, he has served on the Boards of Catholic Social Services,
West Akron Baseball League and the Akron Bar Association. He is a past president
of the Summit County Trial Lawyers Association and also served as Chairman of the
Board of Akron CYO and Community Services.
“It is an honor and a privilege to serve our school as Chairman of the Executive
Board. These are very exciting times at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. The past
school year was a success on many levels. We received state awards for our science
program, foreign language program, band program, and placed in the national
rocket team competition. In its first year, the Irish Mock Trial Team won the districts
and advanced to state regional competition. Also in its first year, students in the
St. Joseph of Arimathea Society served as pall bearers at the funerals for needy
families. Athletically, we won state championships in girls cross country, boys
basketball and boys track and field; state runner-up in boys cross country; and state
playoffs in football. The Special Needs Department continues to be a special program
at our school.

Much of this success is due to the quality, energy and enthusiasm
of our faculty and staff. Our faculty is experienced and continues to
commit extra time and effort to the education of our students.
Despite the challenges presented by our economy, our school
ended the fiscal year under budget. We continue to work to keep
tuition reasonable for our families. In this regard, the school’s
endowment continues to grow and be a vital source of financial
assistance to the school and many students, distributing over
$450,000 this past year.
In the past several years, substantial capital improvements
have been made to our school. Most of the real estate for
future expansion has been acquired. The Center for Science and
Technology has been a centerpiece in what has become a model
high school science program. The Cosgrove Center has allowed
us to be competitive in offering additional gymnasium facilities
for our numerous boys and girls athletic teams. Recent paving
of the student parking lot proved to be an immediate cosmetic
improvement to our campus.
By all measures, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School is a good place
to be with many good people working to enrich the academic,
spiritual and athletic experience of our students. It is important
that we get the message of our school’s success out to alumni
and all interested members of the STVM community. We need to
build on these successes. There is still much yet to do. There are
capital improvements to our school’s physical plant that will need
attention in the next few years. We also need to budget for future
expansion. All of this requires support from our broad community.
Together with the involvement and help of our alumni and
friends, the St. Vincent-St. Mary High School community has a very
bright future.”

two daughters that have graduated from STVM, I have experienced
the core essence of our school that provides our students with
academic excellence and a moral foundation to meet life’s
challenges. By being a part of the STVM Executive Board, I hope
to build on our success and aid in the implementation of school
policies that afford good governance, financial strength, innovative
ideas and stability now and in the future.”

have been greatly rewarded by my experiences at STVM, especially
during my high school years. Our school, St. Vincent-St. Mary,
continues to be a great educational opportunity for the students
as well as an outstanding environment for family, community and
diversity. The students have the opportunity, as I did, to learn how
to work with people as individuals and in a team environment,
both in and out of the classroom. I am honored and privileged to
have been asked to serve on the Executive Board and consider it
an opportunity to give back in some way to the school and to the
community that gave and taught me so many important lessons.

was primarily because I believe that our Board will work diligently
to make decisions that will positively impact the school now and

continues to have one goal.....To ensure that STVM is the best
option in Northeast Ohio for receiving a Catholic High School

important to acknowlege the generous support of our loyal donors
as well as the many achievements and wonderful attitude of our

our STVM students and our STVM community. I am proud to be a

”When I talk of St Vincent-St Mary High School, the word ‘special’
says it all. That was the way I felt when I walked the halls as a
student and that is still how I feel to this day. Over the past 4 years
of my Executive Board tenure, I am most proud of the great strides
that we have made in our operations, while maintaining such a
great faculty and staff. Being a member of the Executive Board
allows me to witness first-hand the way we maintain our high
standards in Catholic education while providing the administration
with direction to manage the process of education in the most
cost-effective manner. We truly are ‘special’ and appreciate your
support in ensuring that we continue to serve our ‘customers’
— the students and parents within the STVM community. I am
looking forward to the coming school year and serving you in my

responsibility seriously. We will continue to be good stewards of

“I selected STVM because
when I walked through those
front double doors, I could
immediately feel the welcoming
and warm atmosphere.
Everyone was so friendly and
extremely helpful with all of
our questions. I can honestly
say that attending STVM High
School was the best decision for
me. The work was challenging
and motivated me to manage
my time wisely. The extracurriculars offered were fun
to be a part of and afforded
me chances to exercise and
cultivate my leadership
abilities. The small class sizes
allowed me to have close
personal relationships with
my teachers, which made for
great recommendation letters
and contributed to the familial
atmosphere of the school. The
prayer services and spiritual
retreats helped me to discover
new aspects of my faith, even
though I am not Catholic,
which is another positive thing
about STVM.
Being accepted at Harvard
University was possible due to
the academic foundation and
growth I received at STVM. I
would give STVM a 9.5 rating
on a scale of 10. Not perfect
but the best you’ll find for miles

Paving the Way to a Bright 2011-2012 School Year
Looking ahead to the 2011-2012 School Year…
Students returning to campus in August 2011 were impressed with the many improvements to the campus interior and
exterior. Thank you, our loyal donors, for making it possible to make these enhancements to our campus.
Black Top/Paving of the Parking Lot
The new 43,000 square feet of
paved area provides 133 numbered
student-assigned parking spots
and enhances the appearance of
the lower lots and stadium area.
Music Room Flooring
New tile flooring was installed in
the Music Room practice area,
giving a clean and acoustically
improved space for our band
rehearsals.

Student Center Doors
Art Room Adds Macintosh Computers
The doors connecting the student center and
academic area of the building were replaced with
new handicap-accessible doors that are not only
aesthetically pleasing, but fully conform to safety
and security regulations.
Our Mac Lab features 10 iMac computers with 21.5
inch screens. The computers are loaded with Adobe’s
Creative Suite 5.5 software application, which includes
graphic arts programs, such as Photoshop, Illustrator,
and InDesign. The goal is to help students develop
graphics arts skills that will benefit them in college
and also prepare them for the working world.
STVM School Buses
Two new school buses, proudly
featuring “St. Vincent-St. Mary
High School” on the side, have
been acquired for the purpose of
transporting our students to and
from school and athletic events.
