Texas Annexation… What issues were at stake for the U.S. and Texas? Significant issues regarding the annexation of Texas by the United States 1. One step closer to true Manifest Destiny. 2. Leads to conflict over the slavery issue. 3. Threat of war with Mexico. Annexation and Manifest Destiny 1. Acquiring Texas leads the U.S. one step closer to realizing Manifest Destiny (stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans). 2. Following the Mexican War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gives the U.S. the Mexican Cession. (The Southwest part of our country including Cal, Nev, Ariz, New Mex, Ut, and Col.) Annexation and the slavery issue 1. Bringing Texas in as a slave state would create an imbalance in the number of free and slave states. 2. Northerners believed acquiring Texas would lead to the expansion of slavery. 3. Free blacks, with some rights under Texas law, would lose most all individual rights under U.S. law. Annexation and eventual war with Mexico 1. Most Americans supported Manifest Destiny but not a war with Mexico. 2. When Texas was annexed, a major issue was the southern boundary of Texas...the Nueces River (Mexico) or the Rio Grande (U.S.).
