Texas Annexation and Manifest Destiny PowerPoint

Texas Annexation…
What issues were at stake for the
U.S. and Texas?
Significant issues regarding
the annexation of Texas
by the United States
1. One step closer to true Manifest Destiny.
2. Leads to conflict over the slavery issue.
3. Threat of war with Mexico.
Annexation and Manifest Destiny
1. Acquiring Texas leads the U.S. one
step closer to realizing Manifest
Destiny (stretching from the Atlantic to
the Pacific Oceans).
2. Following the Mexican War, the
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gives
the U.S. the Mexican Cession. (The
Southwest part of our country including
Cal, Nev, Ariz, New Mex, Ut,
and Col.)
Annexation and the slavery issue
1. Bringing Texas in as a slave state
would create an imbalance in the
number of free and slave states.
2. Northerners believed acquiring
Texas would lead to the expansion
of slavery.
3. Free blacks, with some rights
under Texas law, would lose most
all individual rights under U.S. law.
Annexation and eventual
war with Mexico
1. Most Americans supported
Manifest Destiny but not a war
with Mexico.
2. When Texas was annexed, a
major issue was the southern
boundary of Texas...the
Nueces River (Mexico) or the
Rio Grande (U.S.).
