Aim: SWBAT find the absolute value of a number AND begin to
define and identify properties of addition and multiplication.
Do Now: Stand where you and your number go!!!!

Opposite (additive inverse) : the result of taking a
number and changing its sign.
• A number and its opposite are equidistant from zero on
the number line, but on opposite sides of zero.
• A number and its opposite sum to zero
Absolute Value: the distance from 0 to a number, n, on
the number line
Both a number and its additive inverse have the same
absolute value.

Commutative Property of Addition
September 03, 2015
(Commutative, +)
a+b=b+a
Terms are switching around the addition sign.
3+5=5+3
Commutative Property of Multiplication
(Commutative, )
ab = ba
Terms are switching around the multiplication sign.
3 5 = 5 3

Associative Property of Addition
September 03, 2015
(Associative, +)
a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c
3 + (5 + 7) = (3 + 5) + 7
Terms remain in the same order.
Terms get regrouped.
Associative Property of Multiplication
(Associative, )
a(bc) = (ab)c
3 (5 7) = (3 5) 7
Terms remain in the same order.
Terms get regrouped.

Additive Identity Property
a+0=a
September 03, 2015
(Identity, +)
Whenever you add zero,
you don't change the value.
Multiplicative Identity Property
a(1) = a
(Identity, )
Whenever you multiply by 1,
you don't change the value.

Additive Inverse Property
-a + a = 0
September 03, 2015
(Inverse, +)
The sum of a number and its opposite (additive inverse)
is always zero.
-3 + 3 = 0
Multiplicative Inverse Property
2(½) = 1
(Inverse, )
The product of a number and its reciprocal
(multiplicative inverse) is always one.
