President’s Message ... from the archives
T
o all the residents of this
community of communities,
a very hearty welcome as we enter
upon the summer season of 1924.
We are planning, as all other
executives have done, to make this
the finest season ever enjoyed on
this, the best corner of the island.
Unfortunately old Sol has been
very backward but with the warm
weather now upon us, we feel
sure that by the time this Weekly
has reached you everything will
be in full swing. In publishing our
programme for the year, of which
we trust you have received several
copies, we have endeavoured to
spread over the whole summer, our
outstanding and special events,
so that you will be better able to
enjoy them and not feel that the last
three weeks of August are full to
overflowing.
Each chairman has measured
up to, and endeavoured to go a
little beyond, the high standard
established in former years. The
chairman of the entertainment
committee has made great
improvements in our Shelter, and
we hope to have the co-operation
of every member of the Association
in seeing that the piano is not
misused or abused. It is our desire
to keep the extension to the Shelter
open, and we feel sure that if you
co-operate with us that this will be
possible.
Impress on the children not to
abuse the property of either the
City or the Association, and if this
is accomplished you will be more
than repaid by the educational value
in their training. We also want the
boys and girls to co-operate with
us. There are many things that
cost considerable money to make
and put up, which are destroyed
by thoughtlessness on the part of
the children. We would also seek
your co-operation in the matter
of milk bottles which are allowed
to accumulate and then become
broken, as broken glass is a menace
to all our children, particularly on
the Lake Shore. See that the milk
man, and he only, gets the empty
milk bottles.
Please remember that everything the
executive does is, as we see it, in the
best interests of Ward’s Island. If
you have a suggestion, let us have it,
but if only criticism, bury it.
H. Tasker, President, June 28, 1924

Countdown to Gala 2012!!
You might notice a few odd pieces
in this issue. No, we haven’t lost our
minds or entered a Time Warp. We
just wanted to treat you to some
priceless bits from Weeklies past,
to get you in the mood for the WIA
Centennial kick-off at this year’s
Gala Day, preparations for which
are moving into high gear. In fact,
it’s getting to that point in the season
when I start to get really annoying
– leaving phone message, sending
emails, accosting people in the
boat, all with the goal of snagging
volunteers for the multitude of tasks
that must be done to make Gala
Weekend truly fabulous. Yes, I’ve
become your friendly neighbourhood
nag, and the way to put an end to it
is, of course, to step up to the plate
and take on a chore or two. Here’s
how you can help:

• The Gala Day Raffle is a
highlight of the weekend, and
as always, we need donations
for a long list of prizes that
will make everyone hold their
breath, thinking “Is this finally
my year? Am I going to win
that high-tech toy / spa weekend
/ box of handmade doilies?”
We’re looking for exciting (new,
not used) products, services,
experiences, gift certificates, etc.
If you have contributions and/
or ideas, contact me at 416-2030788 or mcdonnellkath@gmail.

• I’ve heard from several people
who are keen to help bring back
Dinner in the Park, and I’ll be
in touch with you all (probably
by the time this Weekly comes
out) to set up a meeting to start
working out the details. As
previously announced, main
courses will be a roast pig and a
vegetarian dish (tba), courtesy of
the WIA. We’ll be asking people
to bring side dishes, salads and
desserts, most likely organized
by street (as in days of yore). Full

• We need a whole whack of
volunteers to staff the Beer
Garden (selling tickets and
merchandise, serving beer, wine
and snacks) and to help out at
Bingo. These jobs consist of
shifts of at least 2 hours. We’ll
also need a small crew for the
Green Elephant Sale on Monday.
If you’re planning to be a seller,
please consider putting in a bit
of extra time before or after for
set-up and takedown. To get a
head start on our roster and help
the various co-ordinators, please
fill in the form on the back page
of this Weekly. Yours truly or one
of the volunteer co-ordinators
will be in touch closer to Gala
weekend to confirm times, etc.
Thanks in advance from your pesky,
super-enthusiastic, Centennialobsessed Gala Day 2012 Chair.

Plus ça change ...
From the WIA Weekly, July 25, 1925
SHHHH!
It’s Summer
A gentle reminder to us
all that as neighbours
crank their windows
open to try to stay cool,
your fun just might be
someone else’s sleepless
night.
So please, once your
neighbours start going
to sleep:
Either keep voices
hushed or hang out
away from the houses!
(The island is over 5k
long... just saying.)
Don’t play loud music or light fireworks in the community! (Many
dogs are terrified of loud noises. And they wake people up,
including babies and children.)
Help eliminate yelling and whooping within the neighbourhoods!
Your community will thank you.
Looking forward to some sleep,
Allyson Woodrooffe
