TheguitarevolvedfromEuropeanandAsianinstrumentsduringtheMiddleAges(sitar,oud,tanbur, andlute).Intheexhibitionguitarsaredisplayedsidebysidenexttotheguitarasweknowittoday,with itssignaturehourglassshape.Visitorswillseehow,insteadofusingalargehollowsoundbox,the electricguitarusesmagneticcoilstocapturethevibrationofthestringsandturnitintoamplifiedsound, makingtheguitaroneoftheloudestdevicesevercreated.Onecomponentoftheexhibitionsexplores howwide-scaleproductionoftheelectricguitarstartedinthe1950sandhascontinuedunceasinglyto thepresent.InventorsanddesignerslikeGeorgeBeauchamp,LeoFender,LesPaul,TedMcCarty,and PaulBigsbycameupwithradicalbodyshapesthatalsochangedtheshapeofmusic.Visitorswillsee theseguitars–Rickenbackers,Fenders,Gibsons,andmore–andhearhowtheelectricguitarwas responsibleforthecreationofentirelynewstylesofmusic.Havingviewedtheevolutionofguitars, visitorswillexplorewhatrolememoryandsenseshaveinplayingtheguitar.Theycantesttheirmemory byplayingriffsonavirtualfretboardthatteststheabilitytoremembercomplexpatterns.
