PRINCIPAL’S COMMENTS
FOUNDERS’ DAY 2013
In 1976 my husband, Geoffrey and I, teachers at St Peters Lutheran
College, Indooroopilly, were asked to sing at a function on the
Redcliffe Peninsula at the site of a proposed secondary school. We
travelled on muddy bush tracks in the pouring rain to a paddock
somewhere, and later adjourned to Grace Primary School for the
barbeque to escape the weather. Geoffrey and I commented to each
other, “Whoever thinks they can get a school going out here?”
Well, they did, those courageous and committed founders, and I
probably wouldn’t have believed that many years in the future I would
be Principal of that school with 1800 students on two campuses.
It was a joy to see so many of our founding parents, students and
staff attend our inaugural Founders’ Day on 27 October, followed
by our annual College Open Day, and to hear their stories of faith,
fundraising and friendship that is ongoing to this day. Thank you all
for the solid foundation you built at Grace: we continue to honour you
and our Heavenly Father through our service.
It was fitting to celebrate this event in the year of our first graduating
students who began at Grace in Year 7 at Rothwell, and at the brand
new Caboolture campus in 2008. These Caboolture students have
been dubbed “the Pioneers” by Mr Dallas, and have shown a similar
enterprise and faithfulness as the first Grace pioneers.
A huge thank you to Mrs Annette Clark, who in her retirement year,
initiated and organised this wonderful event. I would like to pay
BITS & PIECES
tribute to Annette, who has edited this publication since its inception
and coordinated past student contacts and events for many years.
As a founding staff member who has served for 35 years, she is
to be remembered for her pioneering spirit and faithfulness to this
community.

to make recommendations about this important topic. We have
produced a digital resource that you can download for no charge
from our website: http://choosingasecondaryschool.com.au Grace
has now graduated over 5000 students, many of whom are receiving
this latest Gazette.
OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE
At Grace we believe that every student has gifts that can and
should be developed. This principle is behind our wide range of
subject choices and increasing opportunities in Vocational Education
including Certificate qualifications in most subject areas. A significant
number of students are enrolling at Grace to take advantage of our
Academic Enrichment options that include extension electives (Year
8-12), a focus on Higher Order Thinking Skills, enrichment days and
for 2014, “Game On”, a Music Extension programme from Year 7.

RETIREMENTS continued
Mr Malcolm Carter will be
retiring at the end of this year after
serving the college for 14 years.
Born in the United Kingdom, he
represented English Schoolboys
at cricket and was competitive at
athletics. After university, he played
Bridge professionally but was
eventually approached to play cricket
in Australia. He took up a teaching
position in Brisbane and while
playing cricket, also represented
Queensland at Bridge.
After joining the staff in 1979 and being one of the original
members of the staff when the College moved to the Rothwell
campus, Mrs Annette Clark is leaving Grace. Originally
recruited to teach commercial subjects, she has proved her versatility
by being a keen English teacher, as well as among many other
things being instrumental in having internet lessons for staff when
educational sites were a novelty. The Grace Gazette which is
currently distributed to approx. 5000
current and past students and staff
has been edited by her for 25 years
and she and Mr Ian Hauser co-edited
‘Grace Alone’, the history of Grace
Lutheran College 1978-1998.
After marrying a local girl, he settled in Australia and, after a number
of postings, came to Grace, firstly as a Senior Chemistry & Biology
teacher and, finally, Dean of Curriculum and Academic Progress.
It has been his passion to see young people be the best they can
possibly be, for the sake of making a better world. We wish him
the very best for the future.
Mrs Clark was always interested in
retaining the history of the college so
took on the job of collecting materials
for Archives while at the same time
holding the position of Teacher/
Librarian. In 1992 she took great
pride in seeing her dream of a permanent library come true after
several years of planning.
Her involvement in so many varied activities of the college over
so many years is greatly appreciated. She hopes to find some
opportunity next year to continue using the talents she still has like
teaching English with migrants or assisting students with reading/
literacy difficulties. We wish her God’s blessing in the future.
After 33 years as a staff member
at Grace, Mrs Yvonne Clunes,
Teacher/Librarian, has decided
it is time to take life at a slower
pace and, unfortunately, will not be
returning next year.
Mrs Clunes was originally a most
valued volunteer at the College in
1980 when her older daughter,
Tracey, commenced in Year 8. She
volunteered to assist with the few
books the College had in the ‘library’ (a couple of shelves in a multipurpose space). She assisted with painstaking tasks like covering
books and typing cards for them.
Over the ensuing years, she worked toward gaining her
qualifications as a teacher/librarian and in 2006 the opportunity
arose for her to take on the College Teacher/Librarian position. She
is most grateful for having been part of the staff and having received
so much support over the years, especially at the time she was
studying.
She has been involved in the Year 8 Pastoral Care programme for
some years, including the organisation and supervision of the annual
camp. Mrs Clunes says it has been a privilege to have been able to
be in a position where she has had the opportunity of assisting and
supporting young people. She has also been blessed working with
a wonderful group of dedicated, caring and supportive people.
Mrs Clunes is now looking forward to a new phase in her life and
discovering what new things God has in store for her.

REUNION - 20 year
AROUND THE CAMPUSES
Year 9 Business and Economics classes on both campuses spent Term
3 planning, organising and evaluating Business Ventures. A variety of
stalls from Car Wash to Chocolate and Soak-a-Teacher to Sausage
Sizzle were conducted with the money raised (over $3000) being
donated to charities nominated by the students.
Year 9 Science students always enjoy a fascinating time solving a
crime in their Forensic incursion. At both campuses, these students were
presented with a crime scene, based on a real crime in NSW, and
some background information from witnesses and other evidence. From
there, the students examine the evidence, draw conclusions and, if
possible, solve the crime.
As a part of Project Indonesia Exchange (Caboolture) last year, a group
of staff and students attended a camp and school with students and
staff in Sidikalang and Lawe Sigala Gala, in Indonesia. This year, it
was our turn to host the visitors who spent time visiting both campuses.

Melissa Wall (Lacon), Vanessa Murphy (Keam)
Water Polo
Shed Happens (Caboolture) has been operating this year where the
“blokes” gather over food and drink (soft!) sharing their life journeys.
A special guest was Chad Polinski, ex-student who co-founded Shed
Happens.
The P & F has always been of tremendous support to the college. Over
the past few months they have funded a huge list of items, including
dance costumes, drums, guitars, cymbals and special equipment for
Science and IT.
Lorraine & Murray Eilola, Cathy Brown, Annette Clark, Ruth Butler, Fred Stolz, April Ford
Paivi Adeniyi (Year 9) won the secondary section of the Future Leaders
Competition, writing a 1500 word essay and speaking persuasively on
“Immigration”.
Grace (Caboolture) Film and Television students came 2nd in the QUT
Caboolture Film and Television competition.
Declan Watson, playing in the State 15 years Schoolboys Aussie
Rules championships, was awarded best player for the Sunshine Coast
Region and named shadow players for the Queensland team.
Science & Engineering Challenge
Early Childhood students visited Grace Crèche and Kindergarten to
help with an assessment task. They later submitted “write learning
stories” on some of the children they observed.
Year 9 Food Studies classes visited the Windsor Community garden
where they experienced first-hand a working market garden and
learnt about sustainable farming and using earth materials for craft
and painting. They will be able to apply this knowledge in their own
vegetable garden at the College.
This year’s Athletics Carnival was won by Pegasus over Phoenix.
Grandparents’ Day went off most successfully again this year with many
family members in attendance to enjoy the performances and display of
work put on by Year 7 students.
On Seniors Back to School Day, Seniors spent the day with Year 11
Work Education students conducting them on a tour of the College,
culminating in a group discussion over morning tea.
Year 10 students from both campuses visited 180 Recording Studio,
Enoggera, to record covers of popular songs. The enthusiastic and
talented students enjoyed learning about the recording process and
took the opportunity of having their own recordings processed.

Athletics Carnival
Thanks to the generosity of the P & F, Drama students in Years 10-12
had the opportunity of extending their skills in Physical Theatre
workshops with Artist-in-Residence, Drew der Kinderen from Zen Zen Zo.
In August, a number of Year 10-12 Caboolture students ended their
holidays early to volunteer at the Abbey Medieval Festival, dressing in
costume of the time and participating in a jousting tournament.
Special congratulations to the students who have completed their TAFE
courses; Kelly Crawford – Cert III in Animal Studies, Vanessa Carl,
Jacinta Collison and Lauren Smith Cert III in Hospitality and Events,
Catherine Ball, Courtney Farrell and Connor Markula Cert III in Media,
and Sabrina Wills Cert III in Interior Decoration.
Allison Morrish, Susan Scott, Michelle Blookfield, Leah Hussie, Peta-Lee Markey, Elizabeth McGlinn
Caitlyn Moreen (Year 11) and Ellanora Moreen (Year 10) were
selected to play in the Northern Territory U18 AFL side in September.
Peter Pan production
The Middle School Drama Production (Caboolture), “Peter Pan” was
very well received by the audience. A large number of students and
staff were involved in the show.
The Caboolture Bush Dance was a roaring success, greatly assisted by
the Moreton Bay Celtic Fiddle Club and Grace Celtic Ensemble.
LOTS GOING ON
FOUNDERS’ DAY
TRAVEL
Founders’ Day, held in conjunction with Open Day this year in
October, proved a tremendous success. It was a day set aside to
acknowledge the visionary people who laid the foundation of the wellrespected school that Grace College is today. It was an opportunity
for all to give thanks to the Lord for the spirit and faith displayed by all
those involved. It was also an opportunity for the Year 12’s of 1983
(all 10 in total!) to celebrate their 30 Year anniversary.
The annual ski trip this year headed to Queenstown, New Zealand,
while the Germany Study Tour visited several cities as well as staying
with families from our sister school Geschwister Scholl Gymnasium in
Lebach.
As many past students, staff, parents and College supporters from
the first 10 years of the College as possible were invited. Sadly, we
have lost touch with many who could have been involved. After the
Thanksgiving Service conducted by Pastor John Vitale assisted by past
student, Pastor Matt Thomas, a number of speakers – Mr Viv Kuhl,
Mr Fred Stolz, Mrs Marianne Cooper (Maclean), Founding Parent,
Mrs Wendy Phillpotts (Shimmin), first Girls’ School Captain and Tim
Meyer, representing the 1983 Year 12’s – painted a clear picture
of the people of faith who, in spite of lengthy struggles and numerous
disappointments, fought on to establish the College and support it over
the years.
Afterwards, guests retired to relax over lunch and to take the opportunity
to catch up with friends, many of whom had not been seen for
probably 30 years.
Anyone interested in obtaining a copy of the speeches may do so.
They are available by email or post on request to
[email protected].
GRACE PASTOR, 2014
Pastor Jim Strelan has accepted the call to be Pastor at Grace in 2014.
Pastor Jim was born in Bendigo, Victoria, but grew up in Adelaide. For
most of his life, he has been involved in schools. On graduation from
the Lutheran Theological College, he was assigned to Madang, PNG,
where he was Chaplain to a number of schools.
He then spent time as School Chaplain at St Peter’s, Indooroopilly and
then Living Faith, Murrumba Downs.
He and his wife Ruth have three children and three grandchildren. He
enjoys sports including AFL, golf and cricket.
CREATIVE INDUSTRIES SHOWCASE 2013
9 August saw yet another spectacularly successful Showcase of work
from the Year 10 Visual Art and Film students. It was an energetic night
full of fun, colour and entertainment. The Ruth Butler award went to
Kayla Humphries while Georgia Maller was the winner of the Supreme
Award.
SERVICE
Year 12’s volunteered for a day at the Cartmill Centre, Burpengary,
where riding therapy is provided for disabled adults and children,
a most worthwhile activity and one that quickly raised the students’
awareness of some of the difficulties faced by disabled people.
A busload of students, staff and supporters participated in the annual
Bridge to Brisbane fund-raiser. Funds were raised to support our
Watoto Sponsor Children. This specific project supports three
children in the houses that the school originally built in 2007.
Yr 10 Interview Day
TRADE TRAINING CENTRE
Our application to build a Trade Training Centre to deliver industryspecified qualifications in Engineering, Construction and Furnishing
has been approved by the Department of Education, Employment
and Workplace Relations. We anticipated commencing the building
project in Term 4 but, due to the change of government in the recent
election, the funding agreement has been delayed. We hope to have
the workshops built and ready for Year 10, 11 and 12 students to
commence training by the start of Term 3 in 2014.
The Trade Training Centre includes the construction of an engineering
workshop, a combined furnishing/construction workshop, a preparation
area, a theory room, staff room, amenities, storage space and a
covered outdoor work area as well as the provision of equipment. It will
deliver qualifications Certificate I Construction CPC10111, Certificate
I Engineering MEM10105 and Certificate I Furnishing LMF10108
to address skills shortages in the trades of cabinetmaking, metal
fabricating, carpentry and a variety of trades across the construction
and manufacturing industries.
For many years, Grace Lutheran College has been offering authority
subjects in Technical Studies, Graphics, Industrial Technology and
Manufacturing. However, the establishment of the Trade Training
Centre will allow us to offer nationally recognised training in preapprenticeship programs that will be very beneficial to our students
wanting to enter into a trade after Year 12. Completion of the
Certificate 1 courses in Construction, Engineering and Furnishing will
allow Grace students to receive a time credit off an apprenticeship in
these industries. As there is to be a work experience component to
these programs, the students will be able to make valuable connections
to potential employers that may lead to permanent employment after
Year 12. We have already developed an Industry Partnership Program
to develop close ties with local industry and hope that this will only be
strengthened through the coming years so we can be sure that we are
delivering training to industry standards. Our thanks go to all of our
local partners who provided us with Letters of Support for our Trade
Training Centre application. Their faith in us is much appreciated as
well as for their trust that we will be able to supply a work-ready cohort
of students each year to satisfy their recruitment needs.
All year levels are involved in Service Learning projects. Recently,
the Year 7’s collected and prepared Care Packages for the ADF in
Afghanistan (including the sniffer dogs!). Year 8’s collected a total of
93 shoe boxes to send to villagers in SE Asia. Year 11’s have been
doing a range of projects in Religious Education classes including
collecting toiletries for homeless and cans of food to support Bayside
Community Care. Year 12’s have started some clay handprints
for the Wall of Hands project to support indigenous literacy and
numeracy as part of their Close the Gap programme.
Watoto
A group from Grace are furiously raising funds to travel once again
to Cambodia in December. They aim to purchase agricultural kits to
enable poor rural families to kick-start their farming production and
create a permanent water source for animals and crops. While there,
they will visit past students Doug and Lizzie Shobbrook who have
recently settled in Cambodia with their toddler to continue their work
in education and health with the villagers in the area.

PEACE WEEK
The week 4-9 August was designated Peace Week for the College
with a significant number of events taking place. “The Armed Man”
was a contemporary work with a significant message of peace.
Choirs and orchestras from the community, including Grace,
combined for the work of professional quality. World Peace Day
was held on 6 August, the date on which the first atomic bomb was
dropped on Hiroshima. Special visitors on the day included students
and dignitaries from Nichidai, Tokyo.
HEALTHY MINDS
Specialist speakers addressed students at each level on such matters as
Drugs and Alcohol, Anxiety, Relationships/Music Therapy and Body
Image. These addresses were followed up by workshops. Students
reported that they found the day both supportive and rewarding.
Showcase
Earlier this year, the
largest group ever
visited Uganda.
Students were a credit
to the school and
their families. They
achieved goals set but,
even more importantly,
they had experiences
they will remember for
the rest of their lives.
Students at Caboolture, after hearing about the tragic situation of
the Dalit people of Nepal, commenced raising funds to go to ALWS
(Australian Lutheran World Services) who are assisting these people.
Over $1200 was raised to go towards assisting Nepalese children.
Japanese Cranes, Peace Week
The service, with a variety of participants, was very moving. Some
highlights were a welcome to country by indigenous elder, Michael
Connolly, a special message from the Mayor of Hiroshima, a
recording of the Peace Bell as it was being tolled in Japan and a
presentation of peace cranes to Nichidai students by students studying
Japanese at Grace.

SIGNING OFF
My years spent as Editor of the “Grace Gazette” have been most rewarding. I have particularly enjoyed the opportunities it has given me to
keep in touch with so many past students and to learn what they are doing both in their working and personal lives. It is my hope that some
will remain in touch with me though I may no longer be working at the College. I will be contactable on [email protected].
May God go with you all.
