Communist leader of the Soviet Union Gorbachev set up the wall. The Fall of the berlin wall was then the wall was pulled down in 1989 it was the beginning of a unified Germany. When was this event and what are some key details about it? The berlin wall fell in November 9, 1989 It fell because Cold War began to thaw across Eastern Europe The economic system of the Soviet Union was breaking down, leading to an implosion. The military buildup of the United States and NATO countries during the Cold War effectively backed down the Soviets, bankrupting them. It was the triumph of free markets over the command economy: people in Eastern Europe rebelled because they wanted a Western standard of living.
