Bundled expertise – specifically for
your transportation logistics needs
Pulp & Paper
Today DB Schenker Rail transports around nine million tonnes of pulp and paper
throughout Europe. We use special equipment for transporting paper rolls to protect
this sensitive freight from the effects of weather and deterioration in quality – providing safe and reliable shipments even when great distances have to be covered.
When customers or recipients do not have a siding of their own, we organize delivery by truck via one of our numerous Railports in Germany and Europe, which allows us to deliver goods to printing works on a just-in-time basis. DB Schenker Rail is
an important partner for the international pulp and paper industry. With shipments
coming from Scandinavia and overseas, we take on responsibility for distribution to
printing works and packaging manufacturers throughout Europe, ensuring effective
connections between the seaports and hinterland destinations. DB Schenker papersolution illustrates our exceptional efficiency in this sector. This sector-specific product is geared toward the special requirements of the pulp and paper industry and
connects the most important national production and printing works sites. This
successful product has already been expanded to include the first international
routes.
Industrial & Consumer Goods
DB Schenker Rail offers tailored transportation and logistics solutions from the production facility to the recipient for a wide range of industrial and consumer goods.
We are a strong partner, especially when it comes to cross-border transportation.
Renowned manufacturers of brand name products and import and export companies alike benefit from our extensive range of products. We develop custom
logistics solutions for each of our customers, which may involve special transportation concepts and special freight cars, supplemented by various services like
warehousing, order picking and distribution via our Railport system. Our portfolio
includes such diverse services as international beverage logistics; transportation of
white goods, furniture, agricultural machinery and other goods by single wagonload
from various European production sites; and the shipment by block train of entire
industrial complexes to and from Eastern Europe.

Agricultural Products
Food safety and maintaining quality are all-important in this sector, and this imposes high standards on equipment and the transportation chain. DB Schenker Rail is
Europe’s largest rail freight company to obtain HACCP certification (with conformity to
GMP B.4). Through this certification and the use of special freight cars with a special
inner lining for protecting foodstuffs, DB Schenker Rail has set new quality standards
in agricultural logistics. We transport around two million tonnes of grain, sugar, feed
and oilseeds annually from warehouses to seaports, mills and other processing plants
both within Germany and internationally – over long distances and in the shortest
amount of time. The additional services we can provide to meet your needs include
warehousing and quality control, thus opening up new possibilities for transporting
your sensitive goods. New and innovative fields of business present growing requirements. Here again we offer an immediate and professional response and support our
customers along the entire process chain.
Wood
Uninterrupted transportation chains from the collection of raw timber in the forest
right through to supply control at the destination – these are the logistics challenges
posed by the timber industry. DB Schenker Rail tackles them with the help of a strong
partner and the support of cross-carrier solutions. Every year DB Schenker Rail, in
partnership with the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB Schenker Nieten GmbH, transports around six million tonnes of raw and cut timber, chipboard, mature timber, pellets and wood chips – in reliable, environmentally friendly international operations.
Effectively linking rail expertise and freight forwarding skills underpins our wide
range of logistics services associated with transportation. DB Schenker Nieten GmbH
has a comprehensive network of timber loading stations and a large fleet of special
freight cars. We have developed an IT platform specifically for the timber industry
and a growing number of customers use this online timber portal in German for ordering and to receive realtime status information.
Forwarding
DB Schenker Rail processes around two million tonnes of industrial and consumer
goods by rail in cooperation with forwarding customers. Mixed shipments of everything from palletized goods to bulk freight in the chemicals/metals industry require
a high degree of flexibility. We cooperate with forwarding companies to develop
customer-specific logistics concepts that will gradually facilitate a shift from truckbased transportation to rail transportation. DB Schenker Rail offers extensive rail expertise and a large range of custom transportation and logistics solutions. This makes
us a strong partner and ensures that the diverse products we transport arrive safely
and reliably in Germany and Europe. DB Schenker Rail’s service portfolio ranges from
bundling transportation flows in block trains to full intermodal solutions using the flexible single-wagonload system.

Integrated logistics –
a stable foundation for the building
and disposal industry
Building Materials
Dealing with building materials like sand, clay, cement, stone chippings, ballast
and gravel is a business with its own rules: just-in-time concepts for raw materials
and finished construction elements, special transportation equipment with stateof-the-art loading and unloading technology and precisely planned workflows are
indispensable for the construction industry. DB Schenker Rail’s special strength
lies in all aspects of a high-quality and economically sustainable all-in-one solution.
For example, we deliver up to one million tonnes of clay to the Italian tile industry
every year. The finished tiles are then transported from Italy to Germany, also by
rail. In the cement industry we meet the specific requirements of various products
with reliable shipments of cement and cement clinker. Whether it is a matter of
transportation planning, loading and unloading of all goods, transshipment, or supplementary warehouse logistics services – you can count on a competent partner in
DB Schenker Rail.
Lime/Gypsum/Slurry

materials and metals/mining industry. In addition, we provide a reliable supply of
lime and quicklime to German electric companies’ power plants. These materials are
needed for desulfurizing flue gas. This process results in large quantities of flue gas
desulfurization gypsum, which DB Schenker Rail then carries back to customers in
the building materials industry. For our transportation concepts for lime and gypsum
products, we have an extensive fleet of freight cars with special loading and unloading technology as well as transportation protection features and highly effective
transshipment terminals. In addition to gypsum and lime shipments, DB Schenker
Rail also provides a continuous and reliable supply of coatings based on GCC and PCC
slurry to production plants in the paper industry.
Waste Disposal
In its Disposal Market Unit, DB Schenker Rail faces such challenges as strict legal
requirements, project-based business, special equipment and integrated logistics
concepts, even across national borders, and develops ecological and economical
solutions to tackle them. Whether it is a matter of pure transportation services
in connection with domestic waste, additional integration with plant logistics for
alternative fuel transportation, or offering an all-in-one package for the disposal of
contaminated soil or similar projects – on request, DB Schenker Rail will draw up
a comprehensive strategy for waste utilization supported by full logistics services
and all ancillary services. As a certified waste disposal specialist with all the requisite authorizations based on the Recycling and Waste Management Act (KrW/AbfG)
and as a member of the waste disposal association Transport und Umwelt e. V.,
DB Schenker Rail has the official qualifications for these operations. DB Schenker
disposal-solution is a sector-specific product that allows us to meet the needs of the
disposal industry.
Project & Logistics Management
Major construction projects are characterized by far-ranging logistics services and
cross-corporate process chains. Based on the construction site logistics of our customers, when it comes to civil and architectural engineering, municipal planning,
or road building, we have to manage large volumes of freight while maintaining
exact schedules. DB Schenker Rail offers customized service packages from a single source and can take on responsibility for all transportation logistics for large
construction sites, including intermediate storage of construction materials. With
the help of intermodal, economical and ecologically sound logistics concepts, we
have managed some of the largest construction projects. Following projects like
clearing Frankfurt’s former main freight depot to make land available for the Europaviertel district as well as the “Alte Mainzer Tunnel” project, DB Schenker Rail is
currently implementing the logistics concept for supplying concrete aggregate materials for the construction of the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport.
