Adding and Subtracting Positive and Negative Decimals and Fractions

Adding and Subtracting Positive and Negative
Decimals and Fractions
Adding and subtracting positive and negative decimals is the same as
adding and subtracting positive and negative integers, except you have
to remember two important rules:
1. Always line up your decimals before adding or subtracting
2. If you have more decimal places in one number, you must add
zeroes to the end of the other number before you subtract (this is
not necessary with addition).
Example: 23.719 – 14.238
23.719
- 14.238
9.481
Example: 23.71 – 14.238
23.710`
- 14.238
9.472
When adding and subtracting positive and negative fractions, you must
remember to find the common denominator.
