20th ANNUAL IRISH OPEN Silver Lake Golf Course, July 9, 2011 LIKE LAZARUS THOMPSON RISES FROM THE DEAD… LUTHY MASTERS THE SILVER LAKE… STAFF WRITER Bob Long (STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.) – Hello fellow Missionaries…The Mission headed East for a change to Staten Island and crossed over into the turf of Johnny ‘Cave Man’ Garland, Sociable Steve Socci, and ‘Cheap Joe’ Postorino, who got his moniker from repeatedly showing up with an empty gas tank and asking for donations to drive. The day started out for many of us visiting Steve Socci’s Staten Island Practice Facility where we enjoyed his hospitality and the many improvements that he and his partners have made in the 2 ½ years since they took it over. The facility has great areas for chipping, putting and sand shots as well as, a one acre Turf T area. Although, one must say, it’s hard to beat that great putting green at Silver Lake. I was curiuos about the name Silver Lake so I called Vince Monardo at the course and he informed me that it was named by the Dutch settlers who first arrived and saw the sun’s reflection off the lake which is now a reservoir and part of the park. Also, I was told the grape vines on holes 4 and 7 produce grapes that are harvested, pressed, and sold as wine to offset costs. They offer two reds and a white. The course was in good shape and you can see the Greens Keeper is working hard to maintain it that way. Next year the short par 3, 6th Hole, will be lengthened to 150 yards and Hole No. 5 renovations will be complete. Steve Thompson of Mission Impossible has seen his game in the toilet for a long time. His last win was way back in 2003 and his record before Silver Lake was an abysmal (that means awful Sergeant Major Neas) 1-8-1. I personally played two days with/against him at Jack Frost and partnered with him at Heron Glen and saw his struggles. But, it all came together at Silver Lake with a 77 gross and a net of 33-31-64 for a four stoke lead over Tom Della Torre of Money Shot and Admiral John Geddes of the Slicers, both with a 3335-68, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. I guess Steve’s lessons from the pro at Bowling Green really paid off. Steve said “it all came together with the putts finally dropping and the breaks going his way for a change.” Professor Go-Go predicted Ken Luthy’s Low Gross win on the first tee on Saturday. Go Go said on the first tee, “Ken, the Silver Lake layout is built for your game.” For those new to the league the “Professor” is an expert handicapper and is often wrong. Although I ‘am told he used chicken bones tossed on the ground while chanting Grateful Dead lyrics by the light of a full moon to make those predictions. Mr. Luthy, a Free Agent ( how can that be Nuni) shot an even 36-3672 to out distance Steve Santo of Nuni a.k.a. “The Evil Empire” by four shots 35-39-74 and the local talent for the AGB’S- Johnny Garland 38-37-75 and Steve Socci 35-40-75. Ken gives credit to his short game for making the difference. Honorable mention goes to Steve Ferman of the newly formed Cheap Hookers who popped his Cherry getting on the GMA Leader Board with in a tie for 17th place for Low Net. He led by No. 3, birdied 13, and led all the way in. Steve hits a long T ball with lots of top spin that travels as far on the ground as in the air. All and all it was a very enjoyable day. The weather co-operated, the course was in great shape and The Après’ Golf on the Veranda while enjoying the cuisine and adult beverages was a fitting end. To a day spent with my friend and fellow competitor, Russell “The Machine” Ebelherr of Irons & Wheel Chairs who gave me a great match that ended in a tie on 18. You’re the best Russ. P.S. Don’t ever bet with Fernando Valencia from the AGB’s on the outcome of T and approach shots by women golfers as viewed form the Veranda. Left to right, or short and putts. I lost $20 & Sergeant Major lost $20, and that paid for Fernando and his family’s lunch. 1 2 3 T4 T4 T4 T4 T8 T8 T8 T11 T11 T11 T11 T11 T11 T17 T17 T17 T17 T17 T17 T17 Top 20 Net Individual Finishers Steve Thompson, Miss Imp Tom Della Torre, Money Shot (23) John Geddes, The Slicers (24) Ken Luthy, Free Agent Shelby Smith, Irons & Woods Steve Santo, NUNI Carl Mazzo, Irons & Woods Randy “Mad Dog” Halat, The Nuts Carmine Mandato, Bears Armando “The Great One” Perez, Scramblers CJ Matarazzo, The Nuts Paul Tompkin, Hogan’s Heroes Will Greco, Money Shot Victor Pallante, Scramblers Dutch Van Vliet, AGB’s Jim Heyl, Money Shot Johnny Garland, AGB’s Gene Komorowski, The Nuts Jim Prusinowski, Cheap H. In all other Individual Stroke Play Finishes, besides first and second place finishes, tie scores will remain ties, and tie breaker procedures will not apply. For example if the 21st to 23rd place scores are the same as the 20th place finish, these scores will all generate Top Finish Points because these stroke play ties will remain ties. We estimated our last group finished in 4 hours and 52 minutes. Lag times on No. 15 were pretty tight indicating that most groups were probably on top of one another most of the day. Overall times were considered acceptable since we inherited a 4 hour and 39 minute pace from the general public. 2011 Silver Lake Pace Estimates: Fastest Foursome: 4:34 Average Round Time: 4:43 Slowest Foursome: 4:53 Median Round Time: 4:44 Last Foursome: 4:52
