Please check grades and let Mrs. van Brunt know if there are any problems. Read to Page 87 in The Alchemist. Work Time Students had 15 minutes to work on Jumble stories. Review Quiz Students took a brief quiz on items we covered last time. o Vocabulary words 1-5 o Indirect/Direct Characterization We went over any questions students had about either topic. Vocabulary We went over the next five words from Unit One: dour, fortitude, gape, gibe, guise. For each, write a sentence using the word (on the same paper as the words/definitions) that shows through context that you understand its meaning. Sentences are due when we finish with all 20 words: September 16 (A Day)/September 19 (B Day). Review of Indirect Characterization Students shared examples of indirect characterization o From pages 51-71 in The Alchemist o From their stories Students turned in Jumble stories. The Alchemist Students responded to the following quotations from the crystal merchant about the pilgrimage to Mecca (wrote for 8 minutes): o “I’m afraid that if my dream is realized, I’ll have no reason to go on living.” o “I’m afraid that it would all be a disappointment, so I prefer just to dream about it.” We discussed the ideas and contrasted this with Santiago’s perspective on dreams. Students received two handouts: Literary Terms/Devices AND Rhetorical Devices. o Students should highlight (or somehow mark) each term as we discuss it in class. Last time, we talked about characterization (on literary terms chart) o Today we are looking at ALLUSIONS (rhetorical device chart). We looked at examples from the book: Melchizedek, King of Salem (Biblical allusion) “His eyes filled with tears as he spoke of the Prophet.” (p. 54 – refereeing to Muhammad) We looked at an example from The House on Mango Street. “…gave us a paper bag with one pair of lemon shoes and one red and one pair of dancing shoes that used to be white but were now pale blue. Here, and we said thank you and waited until she went upstairs. Hurray! Today we are Cinderella because our feet fit exactly, and we laugh at Rachel’s one foot with a girl’s grey sock and a lady’s high heel…” o Allusion to Cinderella o Purpose – to show how a person is transformed – feels like a princess for a day… In the reading for next time (or anywhere after part one) (71- 87), find an example of an allusion, and write about why the author would have included it. What does it add? Do this on the same paper where you wrote your examples of indirect characterization from The Alchemist. Writing – A-Z Story Students will be writing a 26-sentence long story. The first sentence starts with “A.” The second sentence starts with “B”… For the “X” sentence, students may use words beginning with “ex.” This should not just be a list of 26 random, unconnected sentences. They need to tell a story. For extra credit, include an allusion – Label it. You may earn up to five extra credit points for correctly incorporating today’s vocabulary words. Due at the beginning of class next time.
