Standing or Stationary Waves
A Special Case of Interference
Description
When two or more waves of the same wavelength, and
speed and equal or nearly equal amplitude travelling in
opposite directions meet a standing or stationary wave
results.
This is a special type of superposition
Node: the point where the algebraic sum of the displacement of
the incident and reflected waves is always zero.
Antinode: the point where the algebraic sum of the
displacements of the incident and reflected waves is always a
maximum.

-The first mode of vibration has the lowest frequency
-The first mode is known as the "Fundamental" or "first harmonic"
-Each mode after is known as the second, third, fourth.... harmonic
-Each harmonic has twice the frequency of the previous harmonic.
ie. f2 = 2 f1
Number of loops
Inter-nodal Distance
Stationary waves of frequency 100.0 HZ are produced in a medium with a velocity 400 ms-1.
What is the inter-nodal distance (i.e the distance between adjacent nodes)?
