“Solving multistep algebraic equations using inverse operations”

SEPTEMBER 27, 2013
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
“Solving multistep algebraic
equations using inverse
operations”
When you and I attended grammar
school, math instruction was very
different than it is today. Our
current standards and the way
teachers deliver curriculum in the
st
21 century have changed greatly.
In fact, the process of teaching
children to solve multistep algebraic
equations using inverse operations
is something that our kindergarten
students will be exposed to around the New Year! Of course, we use child-friendly
language like this: “There were five goldfish in a bowl, some jumped out, there
were two left. How many jumped out?” Or, in other words, 5 – X = 2.
On Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 7:00 PM, Waverly will host its second Parent
University, “Core Event,” Math Night. The purpose of this adult-only event is to
expose parents to our Think Math program and give them the opportunity to
experience the games that their children play in class first hand. In addition to my
opening remarks, there will be an informative key-note presentation by Dr. Ron
Hattar, our Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and grade specific break-out
sessions, facilitated by our teachers. These smaller group break-outs should be a
lot of fun and will give you strategies for supporting your child at home.
There are two easy ways to register for Math Night… but please do so by 10/11.
Visit the Waverly website and click on the “Math Night” banner to RSVP
electronically, or simply return the form below.
Dr. Jeff Melendez is the Principal of Waverly School. He can be reached at
914-793-6130 ext. 5502 or via email at [email protected].
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Yes, I will be attending Math Night on October 17, 2013 at 7:00 PM at
Waverly School!

Getting Ready to JAM
On Thursday, September 26 your child participated in the 2nd annual JAM Day, a one-of-a-kind
physical activity campaign that was created to invite all of America to pause and take Just-aMinute (JAM) for a quick, easy fitness break to promote the important message about everyone
being active every day.
Your child learned the Waverly School JAM routine during their physical education classes the
first few weeks of school before having the opportunity to perform it with the entire Waverly
School community on September 26 at 2:30 PM. Please ask your child to show or teach you
the JAM routine so that you can join in with them to share in the benefit of being physically active
if only for Just-a-Minute.

Newcomers’ Welcome Picnic
The Waverly PTA's annual Newcomers’ Social was a resounding success due to the hard work and
effort of coordinators Arlene Hyland and Allison Solano.
The Waverly PTA was delighted to welcome over 150 new Waverly kindergarten students and their
families as well as several first grade families that are new to Waverly to this event. All enjoyed
pizza, refreshments, ice pops and DJ entertainment, compliments of the Waverly PTA.
The PTA was also honored to have Waverly Principal, Dr. Jeff Melendez and Eastchester School
District Superintendent, Dr. Walter Moran, join us for the festivities! It was certainly a wonderful way
to start the school year at Waverly.
We would like to thank the following volunteers who so graciously dedicated their time and effort to
helping with the Newcomers’ Social: Arlene Hyland (Co-Chair), Allison Solano (Co-Chair), Maria
Liosatos, Kim Cinguina, Jesse Waters, Brenda Siciliano and Lisa Grabowski.
We would also like to thank Dr. Jeff Melendez for his on-going support of our PTA community and
family events, Mrs. Michele Benas and Mrs. Tracy Mitchell for all of their help and support with this
event and Head Custodian, Mr. Tony Hanson and his extraordinary custodial staff for all of their
help, hard work and effort, not only with the Newcomers’ Social, but also with all of our PTA events
throughout the year.
