Published for donors, volunteers and friends of Providence St. Peter Foundation SPRING 2017 • DONOR RECOGNITION EDITION Cornerstone N E W S L E T T E R Providence Community Care Center set to open this summer T ogether with a generous community, Providence is addressing the diverse needs of our homeless residents, who are some of the most vulnerable citizens in our area. It is because of private philanthropy and community partnerships that the Providence Community Care Center will open this summer. Services currently offered throughout our community operate as stand-alone programs in several different locations. For individuals with serious mental illness, navigating this maze can be an unsurmountable barrier. Often this leads to patients seeking access in inappropriate settings, such as the Providence Emergency Center or landing in local jails. Partnering community agencies: The Providence Community Care Center brings our community’s organizations together as an integrated resource for the first time. Homeless and other underserved people will now be able to find, in a single location, a range of services from various types of agencies. Partnering organizations will offer services such as connections to: primary and behavioral health care, • Behavioral Health Resources “The Community Care Center will serve the most stigmatized people in our local area, providing compassionate care unique to each individual.” – Medrice Coluccio, chief administrative officer, Providence Southwest Washington • Interfaith Works • SideWalk • Sea Mar Community Health Centers • Olympia Free Clinic and Mental Health Access Program • Home & Community Services • Capital Recovery Center • Thurston-Mason Behavioral Health Organizations • Thurston/Mason National Alliance on Mental Illness Continued on page 2 Inside this issue: • A special birthday for the Special Care Nursery, pg. 3 • Save the date for Christmas Forest 2017, pg. 5 • Recognizing generous donors, pgs. 7-11 YOUR GENEROSITY PROVIDES DIGNITY & COMFORT 1 Providence services • Short-term (bridge) medication management • Behavioral health case management • Mental health risk assessments • Mental health treatment • Substance use disorder assessments Partner agency services • Care management • Medical services • Access point to housing and substance use services • Connection to adult family homes • Older adult resources • Veterans’ services • Hygiene services: laundry, showers, restrooms • Job search and resume assistance (computer available) • Peer support Passing along shelter options, resources to help clients find and keep permanent housing, and other needed social services. “The Providence Community Care Center will serve the most stigmatized people in our local area, providing compassionate care unique to each individual,” says Medrice Coluccio, chief administrative officer, Providence Southwest Washington. “We are grateful for contributions made toward the Providence Community Care Center from private individuals, local businesses and our community partners, as they help us serve those at the heart of the Providence Mission, the most poor and vulnerable.” Funding for the Providence Community Care Center is not yet complete, but several community sources have made generous contributions to date: • Providence St. Peter Foundation Greatest Need Fund: $1.2 million • Ted & Ruth Schmidt Community Care Endowment: $900,000 over 10 years • Capital Medical Center: $500,000 over five years • Providence St. Peter Foundation 2015 Christmas Forest Fund-a-Need: $300,000 • City of Olympia Community Development Block Grant: $200,000 To support the Providence Community Care Center and learn more, please visit www.providence.org/olympiacommunitycarecenter compassion Priscilla and Tom Terry are a special couple whose generosity touches those they have never met, and never will. Their concern is for those who are Priscilla and Tom Terry dying, and they do not want anyone to die alone. The Terrys recently committed a $50,000 challenge gift to the No One Dies Alone program (NODA) at Providence St. Peter Hospital. NODA provides compassionate volunteers as bedside companions “No one should die alone. As much as it is in our power, we must be there to give comfort when the time of dying draws near and there is no loved one nearby.” 2 Community Care Center, continued from page 1 to dying patients who would otherwise be alone at Providence St. Peter Hospital, Providence Centralia Hospital, and Providence Mother Joseph Care Center For every gift made to the NODA program this year, the Terrys will match that gift dollar-for-dollar, up to $50,000. The NODA program has a very special place in the hearts of Priscilla and Tom. When Tom was a young man, he was devastated to learn that his grandfather had died alone in a hospital. Tom did not realize that his grandfather was so seriously ill. When he went to visit him that next day, he learned his grandfather had passed away during the night, with no one by his side. This had a profound and lasting impact on Tom. “No one should die alone. As much as it is in our power, we must be there To make a donation to the NODA program, please call the foundation office at 360-493-7981 or go to www.providence.org/giving If you are interested in being a volunteer with NODA, please call 360-493-7240. to give comfort when the time of dying draws near and there is no loved one nearby,” says Tom, who worked 22 years for Weyerhaeuser in Centralia in R&D. The No One Dies Alone program began in 2009 at St. Peter Hospital and is funded entirely by private contributions to Providence St. Peter Foundation. Volunteers in the program provide a reassuring presence to dying patients, with some vigils lasting only one hour and some exceeding 70 hours. In 2016, these compassionate volunteers spent over 5,000 hours with patients who would have otherwise died alone. W W W . P R O V I D E N C E . O R G / G I V I N G “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Dr. Seuss A special birthday for the Special Care Nursery Hayden and Cooper Milligan Bringing a baby into the world is one of the most joyous occasions in a parent’s lifetime. Hayden and Seth Milligan will never forget that joy, and they will also never forget the compassion and care received at the Providence Special Care Nursery at St. Peter Hospital. So much so, that on baby Cooper’s first birthday, Hayden and Seth asked friends and family to give donations to the Special Care Nursery rather than buying presents. Cooper was due on Feb. 11, 2016, but around Christmas, Hayden felt something “just wasn’t right” with her first pregnancy. She called her friend, a labor and delivery nurse at Providence, who encouraged her to call her obstetrician. Hayden discovered that she had cholestasis of pregnancy, which can pose a dangerous situation for the baby, so labor had to be induced early. This is when Cooper and his parents came into the care of the Providence St. Peter Hospital Special Care Nursery, which specializes in neonatal care to meet the unique needs of newborns who are premature, or are born with an illness or complication. “Cooper did have complications” Hayden says. “He spent 13 days in the special care nursery due to several medical conditions related to prematurity.” But with all the personalized care the Special Care Nursery team gave Cooper, Hayden recalls that they were equally there for her and her husband. “The nurses and entire medical team gave us the same level of attention they gave Cooper – they renewed our hope and reassured us every day that Cooper was going to be all right,” Hayden says. The Special Care Nursery at Providence St. Peter welcomes about 400 newborns each year. Some stay only for a short observation, while others, like Cooper, have more extended stays. The nursery’s family-centered Giving to hospice Donations ensure hospice and grief support services are available to anyone in need. Gifts support the highest quality of care and a comprehensive range of services. approach ensures families are directly involved in the baby’s care. The nursery’s goal is to help parents have confidence and feel prepared to care for their baby when the baby goes home. Hayden comments “When I left the hospital with Cooper, I felt so confident that I knew everything I needed to know. I felt like an expert mom, rather than a new mom.” On Cooper’s first birthday, Hayden and Seth felt it only appropriate to celebrate the gift of their healthy and thriving son, by encouraging family and friends to forgo birthday gifts in favor of donations. “They did so much for us and Cooper that we wanted to find a way to give back to the Special Care Nursery.” If you would like to make a donation to the Special Care Nursery at Providence St. Peter Hospital, please call the foundation office at 360-4937981 or go online at www. providence.org/giving. • Compassionate in-home medical care available 24 hours a day • Emotional and spiritual support • Respite care • Grief support services • Children’s bereavement counseling Serving Thurston, Lewis and Mason counties Donate online at www.providence.org/giving or call 360-493-7981. That was until he came across a Providence Mission video posted on the organization’s internal website while working in the System Integrity department in Renton. The video changed his life, and his passion now eases and comforts people who are at their end-of-life journey. Music-thanatology is a program within the Spiritual Care department, and a field within palliative and hospice care. It utilizes the harp and voice at the bedside to serve the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones with prescriptive music and compassion. According to the Music-Thanatology Association International, “this music can help to ease physical symptoms such as pain, restlessness, agitation, sleeplessness and labored breathing. It offers an atmosphere of serenity and comfort that can be profoundly soothing for those present. Difficult emotions such as anger, fear, sadness and grief can be relieved as listeners rest into a musical presence of beauty, intimacy and compassion.” In 2001 Providence became the first health system in the world to hire full-time music-thanatologists. This specialized ministry is an expression of our calling to care for the whole person: body, mind and spirit. We recognize we may not be able to cure, but we can always offer healing. Rooted deep in our rich heritage and tradition, we hold all life as sacred and this is demonstrated in the way we honor a person’s journey at the end of life. The ministry of thanatology eases the way, holds sacred space, touches the spirit and honors the life it touches. Kyle Higaki, Certified Music-Thanatologist “I watched a Providence video clip on musicthanatology,” Kyle says. “A person was playing a harp for a patient who was dying. I was so inspired and moved, that it felt like my calling.” Kyle bought a harp, took lessons for both harp and voice, and enrolled in a two-year thanatology program that required academic and clinical training, as well as a clinical internship. Three years later, in 2015, Kyle left his job in Renton and became a musicthanatologist for Providence St. Peter ministries in the Southwest Washington Region. The program in Southwest Washington is funded entirely by donations to the Providence St. Peter Foundation. Services are available at no charge to patients and their loved ones at St. Peter Hospital, Providence Centralia Hospital and in the privacy of homes for patients who are receiving hospice services through Providence SoundHomeCare & Hospice. Kyle has never looked back. “This calling has never diminished. When I serve in this role every day, I always have moments of affirmation. It is a privilege to be invited into this sacred space and serve patients and their loved ones, particularly those who are nearing end of life.” If you would like to donate to the musicthanatology program, please call Providence St. Peter Foundation at 360-493-7981 or go online, at www.providence.org/giving “The dying patient is my conductor and my musical offerings are tailored to each patient’s need at that sacred moment in time.” 4 Save t he date! 30th annual Christmas Forest set for Nov. 29 – Dec. 3, 2017 Christmas Forest is one of Southwest Washington’s most honored traditions, and 2017 will mark its 30th year! This five-day holiday fundraiser offers a chance for the community to enjoy a festive display of Christmas trees and wreaths, created by Thurston County’s most talented designers. Leading the way Jen and Eric Foley are this year’s Christmas Forest co-chairs. Jen, who has served on the Providence St. Peter Foundation Board of Directors since 2012, says she and her husband are thrilled to take on the co-chair responsibilities for this milestone event. “Eric and I both are looking forward to being co-chairs of the Providence 30th annual Christmas Forest. As a former Christmas Forest tree designer myself, and a foundation board member, both Eric and I are excited about partnering with Providence through Christmas Forest to help raise health care funds for so many in need. It is a privilege to serve as its co-chairs.” If you’re interested in being a sponsor, designer or volunteer at the 30th annual Christmas Forest, please contact Stacey Genzlinger, special events manager, at stacey. [email protected] or 360-493-7985. Honoring past Christmas Forest co-chairs At the 2017 event, past Christmas Forest co-chairs will be honored at the 30th annual gala dinner and auction, held Friday, Dec. 1. Jen and Eric Foley, 2017 Christmas Forest co-chairs Last year’s Christmas Forest raised $534,000 including $151,000 to help sustain the SoundCareKids program. Over the past 29 years, Christmas Forest has raised funds to support life-saving medical equipment, compassionate care, and Mission-driven programs. Christmas Forest is Providence St. Peter Foundation’s largest fundraising event, generating more than $10.3 million throughout its history. O R G / G I V I N G 5 A Message from the Foundation President As we enter the second quarter of 2017, I would like to thank all of our donors, event sponsors, volunteers, caregivers and Providence St. Peter Foundation board members for their generous contributions of time, money and dedication. You all help to carry out our Mission to assure that compassionate and excellent health care is available in the communities we serve, with a special concern for the poor and vulnerable. 2016 Foundation Financial Results Our Mission calls for us to care for many, and I am proud and humbled to say, in 2016 more than $2.1 million was raised from philanthropic support. This incredible generosity helps us sustain programs and services for our patients and their families, acquire state-of-the-art, lifesaving equipment, and provide health care for those in our community without adequate resources or ability to pay. through this magical event that we are able to continue the Providence Mission of helping those in need. Gifts to the foundation enable us to focus on the most prevalent health care needs in our community, such as care for homeless residents, as you will read in the article about the Community Care Center, featured on the front page of this issue of Cornerstone. It is because of the generosity of others, as well as the dedication of our local nonprofit partners, that we have been able to create this social service hub, providing the full spectrum of compassionate care. I feel fortunate to live in a community where so many give of themselves to help others. As Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart said, “Whatever concerns the poor is always our affair,” and I thank you all for your part in helping us to carry out her vision of making our community a healthier and better place for all, especially the poor and underserved. This December is the 30th annual Christmas Forest event-the largest fundraiser for the foundation and a most-honored tradition. Providence was founded on acts of generosity—the Sisters of Providence came to the Pacific Northwest to help the community, especially the poor and vulnerable. We continue their legacy today, espousing compassion, respect, justice and stewardship. Creating legacies has always been a part of our heritage—and we at Providence St. Peter Foundation are fortunate to have received estate gifts from donors. These donors believed that providing for the future is important, helping us carry our work to the next generation. You might be surprised to learn how easy it is to create a legacy and help support causes you care about through St. Peter Foundation. 12 legacies There are simple ways to provide support, including naming organizations as beneficiaries of your Individual Retirement Accounts. You can accomplish this by notifying your IRA administrator and changing or adding beneficiaries to your account. Many of these changes can also be made online. Designating a beloved organization as a beneficiary to a life insurance policy is another easy way to provide support for the organization you care about. Similar to IRAs, making this beneficiary change is quite simple—your policy administrator can provide a beneficiary designation form for you to fill out. The most common method for providing for the future is through your will. The beauty of a will (or bequest) is that you can make a significant gift without impacting your current needs or lifestyle. And these gifts often make longreaching and positive impacts for the organization and programs you care most about. If St. Peter Foundation is a beneficiary in your estate plans please let us know. We would like to thank you and ensure that your gift is used for programs that mean the most to you.
