From the Pastor’s Desk
Fr. Greg Plata, OFM
I have a number of random thoughts
I need to share, or they’ll simply
get filed away in the recesses of my
mind. I don’t want to find myself in
a nursing facility one day lamenting missed opportunities for small acts of kindness and
expressions of gratitude on my part that help make the
Kingdom of God a present reality.
First, I want to say “thank you” to those brothers and
sisters who go and visit the sick. Just the other day, I
stopped by to see one of the home bound. They related
how thrilled they were to receive visits from parishioners, and also receive a monthly card. The woman
I visited said she is profoundly touched by that act of
kindness, because she knows others are thinking of her.
“Thank you” to all who help set up our liturgies,
whether its Gerry Matthews, Mary Jane Faulkner, Paul
and Sandra Correro at IHM, or Dora “Momma” Hollie,
Katherine Fisher and Chima Ikenga at St. Francis. I also
appreciate our lectors, Extra Ordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion, ushers and ministers of Little Church.
I want to say “thank you” to those who are generous in
their financial stewardship. What impresses me are not
the ones who are blessed with financial security, but the
ones who may be struggling but put God first with their
sacrificial offering. St. Paul reminds us “the Lord loves
a cheerful giver.” (Corinthians 9:7)
As the Jubilee Year of Mercy comes to a close, I want
to thank our shepherd and Vicar of Christ, Pope Francis,
for the love, mercy and outreach he has shown to all
people. The point of this whole year was to be enveloped in the mercy of God, to open our hearts to His
grace and forgiveness. Did you avail yourself to receiving the Plenary Indulgence given this year? Did you
make a good confession, and receive that outpouring of
the Spirits healing forgiveness? These are all powerful
gifts for which I am grateful as a Catholic.
Finally, I want to thank all the living saints at IHM and
St. Francis who inspire me in many ways because of
their commitment to Christ, and the living testimony of
their faith.

COLUMBARIUM SPACES AVAILABLE
There are still spaces in our columbarium, which
is in the grotto connected to our church. Immaculate
Heart of Mary parish is a pioneer in this way of respecting the blessed cremains of our beloved deceased, and
many churches are looking to us as a model.
Presently about 35% of all burials now are with cremation, which is recognized by the Catholic Church as
long as the cremains are placed in a blessed, sacred area
(such as our columbarium).
Please come by the Parish Office for more information and to reserve a space for what are known as
cremains after one has been cremated--the single space
is $2,000 and the double space is $3,000.
Each Sunday during
the 9 AM Mass.

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our
Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting
encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good
deed and word.”
2 THESSALONIANS 2:16-17
There are two important lessons here. First, we are
called to be generous with our encouragement and hope.
As God shows us mercy, we must be merciful to others.
Second, joy is contagious! The joy we receive from
doing good works not only strengthens us, it encourages
others as well.
Each Sunday after Mass in our Parish Center. Please come and join us for fellowship
and a few extra calories!

the Kingdom and work of the Church

Decriminalized abortion has led to the
breakdown of the family. There has been
a 400% increase in births outside of wedlock, three million teenagers are treated
annually for sexually transmitted diseases,
and our neighborhoods are devastated by poverty, injustice, crime, and despair. The “fruits” of abortion are
destroying our nation.
