Congratulations to all the staff and students involved in this year’s school production. It
was a thoroughly entertaining show and it was evident how much time and energy had
been put in to get such a quality outcome. I was delighted to see how proud the students
were of their impressive achievement. Well done to all the students on an outstanding
result. Special congratulations and thanks needs to go Shane Harman for the incredible
amount of work he put in as Director.

Burns Street
You may have read in the Maryborough Advertiser about the Central Goldfields Shire Council decision to
grant the school’s request for the permanent closure of Burns street in the portion that separates the
school. Currently that portion of the road is closed during school hours. The permanent closure will be of
a huge benefit for the school in the future and we are currently undertaking a detailed master plan of how
this area can be best utilised by the school. We are very lucky to be in a Shire with such a progressive and
supportive Council and we thank them for their ongoing support of education in the region.
Kind regards,
Mr. Stuart Glascott
SCHOOL CAPTAINS
Hi everyone!
Well done to all who participated in the Musical last week and who helped
backstage to make the performance happen. Thank you to all who went to watch it
and we hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did!
There is an upcoming motivational day for Year 12s next Monday to help us get in
the right mind-set for the upcoming exams. There will be motivational speakers;
some who are past students at Highview College. We all hope to get a lot out of it.
That’s all for now,
Caitlin & Jay
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - PASTORAL CARE
Positive challenge
7B students have a Positive Post-it wall in their Home Room, which they have worked on during Positive
Education sessions. They have made a wall full of positive sayings and quotes, written on Post-it notes
that they share with another student whenever they want. They can also take a Post-it for themselves if
they feel the need. The aim is to brighten someone’s day.
At Assembly this week, 7B students shared their Positive Post-Its idea with the school. They have set up a
Positive Post-its board, which will be in the Library for a week, and they also have a wall in the Library
for use by all students – those who want to use a Post-it as well as those who want to make colourful notes
to share.
This Year 7 class has done an amazing job. The presentation for Assembly was a group effort. Not all
students got up to speak – some handed out Post-it notes, while others had worked hard to make the
Post-its board for the Library. Every student in 7B contributed.
I encourage all students to ‘get on board’ and join the 7B Post-it movement. I also challenge each Home
Group to come up with their own, unique Positive Education activity. Let me know about it and we can
continue to share these ideas with the whole school.
RMHC Ride for Sick Kids
Local McDonald’s owner, Anthony Whiteford, is riding 620km in August as part of a
fund-raiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provide a ‘Home away from
home’ facility for families with a seriously ill child undergoing treatment at the Royal
Children’s or Monash Children’s Hospitals. If you would like to support this worthy
cause, you can donate in store or online (see the flyer on Page 3) or at the Highview
Office.

Year 8 Excursion
As part of the Year 8 program, the students participate in two full day excursions. During Semester 1, the
first excursion saw the students heading off to the Melbourne Zoo. This was a great day for the students to
socialise with each other and their teachers, as well as an opportunity to learn about conservation and
endangered species. Although the weather had been cold and wet in the lead up to the day, Melbourne

HIGHVIEW HERALD
blessed us with a day of dry weather and sunshine! As Kate writes below, the day was a wonderful
experience for the students, and the staff.
“Our day started bright and early having to be at school by eight o’clock. All the students were then put
into groups and got on the buses and headed for Melbourne. Once we had reached the Zoo we went and
listened to a lady talk about what we would be doing for the day. We were all involved in choosing an
endangered animal to save.
We split back into our groups and went walking around the Zoo. We saw lots of different animals. My
favourite place was the butterfly house although no butterflies landed on me, no matter how hard I tried.
Each group attended an information session in which we learnt about all the endangered animals and how
we could help save them.
Finally we went back and the lady from the Zoo talked some more and we cast our votes for which animal
we wanted to save. We got back on the buses, stopped at Calder for a quick snack and then travelled
home.” - Kate Winkelmann
On the bus trip home there was lots of smiling faces, social interactions, singing and comradery. The
students were dropped off at Castlemaine and Newstead before their final departure at Highview, arriving
like clockwork at 7.00pm.
Thank you to the parents, students and staff who made the day such a smooth running and positive
experience!

FROM THE CHAPLAIN
My Mum messaged me from Tassie this week to say it was snowing on the farm. That sounds
like fun (provided you’ve got a good coat or you are sitting in front of the fire)! This got me
thinking about snow a bit (I hope you’re somewhere warm while you read this). When you see
snow come down in a flurry and land in a clump it is easy to think that all snow is the same. You
think, snow is white and cold. The individual flakes appear to be indistinct and they meld together easily.
Yet up close, a microscope reveals spectacular shapes and intricate patterns. Each snowflake is unique.
And we know it is the same with people. When you see a group of people you could blur their faces and
distinctive characteristics, simply calling them a crowd… Or you could take in their complexities,
idiosyncrasies, noting how they complement one another and call them a community instead. At
Highview, we are several hundred students strong, but it is our calling to foster the unique traits of each
individual, to enable them to contribute best to the community they are a part of. We can say with the
Psalmist, ‘Your works [O God] are wonderful!’

FROM THE SPORTS DEPARTMENT
ICCES Winter Tour Report
At the end of last term Highview participated in the annual 2-day Winter Tour at Shepparton. The results
were as follows:
Netball: Junior - 5th / Intermediate - 4th / Senior - Runners Up
Basketball: Junior Girls - 3rd / Senior Girls - 4th / Junior Boys - Runners Up / Senior Boys - 5th
Soccer: Junior - 5th / Senior - 5th
Netball
The Highview netball teams all performed very well. The Junior girls
had many players new to the tournament, and acquitted themselves
very well. The qualifying matches on Thursday were all very close,
with the girls winning 1 and losing 3 other tight matches. Highview
made the elimination final on the Friday against Bacchus Marsh.
Once again the Highview girls came out strong but Bacchus Marsh
came back stronger winning by five. Over the tournament the girls
had strong defence, midcourt and goaling to finish 5th overall. Best
players for the Tournament were Kate Winkelmann, Stacie Solomano
and Charlotte Roche. By Miss Brogahn Richards
The Intermediate girls had trained well in the lead up to the event. The conditions on the Thursday were
cold and wet, however the girls played strong team netball to win 2 and lose 2 matches. The scoresheets
were too wet to see the final scores! After the games were finished the girls were very happy as they were
all going home for a hot shower. The next day the sun was shining and the girls came out firing, however
they just lost both finals. To the girls credit they never gave up fighting, and finished 4th overall. All
players performed well. By Mrs. Maree Gordon
The VCE (Senior) netball team were up against some difficult
opposition this year. We won all our matches comfortably on the
Thursday. We played well in the rain and it was to our advantage that
the weather was very wet and miserable. We finished on top of the
groupings and made our way to the Grand final against Girton. The
weather was cold, but the rain held off for the day. The first quarter
was close but Girton began to take the lead, and our girls could not
catch them. The entire Highview College team played really well
across the event, and are looking forward to the State championships in
the coming weeks. Thanks to Miss Richards, Mrs. Gordon, Mrs. Hare & Mrs. Egan for coaching the
teams. By Mrs. W endy Hare
Basketball
This year the Junior girls basketball team was the most competitive they have been, with some fantastic
results. Thursday saw Highview defeat Braemar 21-3, and Girton 25-6, then lose to Goulburn Valley
Grammar 17-15 and Bacchus Marsh Grammar 15-12. This placed us third to start the knock-out finals.
Overnight we lost Taylor to a knee injury and Grace had to go home, but the team continued to play
awesome as a unit beating Bacchus Marsh 21-18. Moving into the semi-final we went down 24-21 to
GVGS. Our last match, to decide if we went into the Grand final was a re-match against a rested Bacchus
Marsh. Despite our best efforts, we were knocked out with a 19-15 loss. Top scorers for the tournament
were Blazko 39pt and Devereaux 34pt, McLay, M. Farrell and S. Farrell also contributed. Franklin and
Taylor were key to the centre court turn overs with brilliant pressure shown
consistently throughout the games. The team effort was fantastic and will
surely be even stronger next year! By Miss Shona Smith
The Senior girls basketball ball played well in a closely fought
competition. The team played strong team basketball winning matches
through the qualification rounds, and were able to win the elimination final
on the Friday; an awesome effort! They were not quite able to win the next
final. Beppina Marshall, Thouraya Mustafa and Abbey Wagstaff were
excellent with the ball. Jade Davies, Courtney Rowland and Georgia Searle
rebounded well. Olivia Bell, Tia Williams, Zoe Parry and Courtney Dix
fought hard on the court. By Mr. Luke Treacy
The Junior boys basketball team came together after some vigorous training sessions and performed quite
well. The round robin games were contested hard and we came out with a 2 win and 3 loss record. The
highlight of these matches were the 21-5 win over Braemar College and the 20-13 victory over the much
bigger Goulburn Valley Grammar School.
The small, quick players of Highview in Jack Solomano, Zedekiah Marshall, Connor O’Shea, Liam Hurse
and Will Moran caused numerous turnovers which resulted in easy points for our team. The 3 big men
Sam Hobbs, Oliver McMullen and Liam Latch were out rebounding the opposition and scoring on the
offensive end with ease. Our surprise packet Cam McClure, who has not played for a couple of years, was
shooting the lights out from downtown and his 3 point buzzer beater in the qualifying final had the crowd
up on their feet high-fiving everyone.
5
HIGHVIEW HERALD
The 2 point win over Girton in the qualifying final was very tense and it
took us into overtime to beat them. This was a huge turnaround from the
preliminary rounds as they outscored us 20-9. However the close guarding
of their gun player by Connor O’Shea was the difference in this game. The
grand final was a cracking game with scores close between us and Bacchus
Marsh. They got away in the second half and ran out winners 18-13. All of
our players acquitted themselves well in a very improved performance for
the Junior boys basketball team. By Mr. Brendan Dix
The Senior boys competed in a strong and closely contested competition.
Unfortunately the boys lost 3 of the 4 games and drew one game against
Goulburn Valley Grammar school on the opening day.
The losses were close, going down by 11, 7 and 3 points respectively.
Highview outscored every opponent in the second halves but ran out of
time in the short games. On the second day we were outplayed by Braemar
College in the elimination final to lose by 9. Coby Perry was the stand out
player, the two Toms - Hurse & Roughead were rebounding everything. Murray, Joel and Jack were
outstanding defensively and Rhys Egan, Brady Williams & Jarrod Burman all tried hard. Thanks to
Mr. Jenes for coaching. By Mr. Patrick Jenes
Soccer
The Junior soccer team at ICCES had a tough learning curve, competing against
some top representative players and teams in our matches. With a team of only 12,
we showed a lot of guts and determination to keep turning up and giving it a go,
despite being soundly beaten in each game. The weather conditions were horrible,
and the players deserve to be commended for not giving up and always trying their
best. While we didn’t win a game this year, the players learned a lot and will take the
experience into next year. Congrats to Mitch Patterson for scoring our only goal of
the tournament – our strike rate was very impressive, with one goal from almost our
only shot on target! All our players worked hard, but special mention to Tom Every
and Liam Palling, who shared the goalkeeping duties and were two very busy
members of our team. We are looking forward to trying again next year and showing
that Highview continues to improve in soccer against some very well-resourced
schools. By Mr. Cory Skilton
The Highview Senior Soccer team travelled to Shepparton with, some would say, low
expectations but high enthusiasm, keen to get onto the pitch and
represent the school once again. The team received the run-down
from soon to be Socceroos coach Mr. David Dowie and we took to
the field. We lost 3-0 to GVGS, but we didn’t believe that result
showed how even the game really was. In the second match we battled it out against not
only Mother Nature, but Braemar College as well. Sir. Dowie made some key changes
and we won 1-0. The team was ecstatic; this was the first time since participating in the
ICCES tournament that we had been victorious at the senior level! Another win followed,
1-0 vs Hamilton. Two in a row! 1-1 draw BMG followed. The ICCES fixture officers
saved the best match for last, traditional soccer rivals Highview and Girton played out a 1
-1 draw. Finishing 3rd overall was an amazing achievement. The next day we lost in an
elimination final to Braemar College 1-0. Injuries affected the teams performance in the
end, but we went down fighting. In a valiant effort in the second half Highview was
unlucky not to score and get something out of this game.
2015 will go down in history as one of Highview’s best years of soccer at the ICCES
competition. Everyone in the team was very proud of the way we came together with
little preparation and played like we were teammates every weekend. We bonded as a
team over the two days and gained experience playing soccer at such a high level. Goal
scorers included Jesse Harman and Zak Rinaldi. By Jackson Barby (Y ear 12)
Thank-you to all those involved with the organisation prior to the ICCES and those who helped make it
possible whilst we were there. We strongly believe it is the best thing that Highview does as a school; the
competition really brings out how strong our school spirit is.
