PRESS RELEASE The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey Thursday 14 February 2013 – Saturday 9 March 2013 | Press View: Friday 15 February 2013 The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey, a highly original take on Homer’s epic tale, is returning to BAC following a successful nationwide tour across 19 venues. Intricate, hand-illustrated puppets are manipulated in real time and projected onto the sail of Odysseus’ boat to create a unique silent movie. The performance is accompanied by an original live score performed on a musical saw, violin, bubblewrap, guitars, assorted keys, drums, electronics, thundersheet and a power drill, in the company’s most ambitious and large scale work to date. The Paper Cinema’s interpretation of the classic myth about a man on a ten year journey to return to his home shares its cinematic secrets with the watching audience through the specially designed, nautical themed staging, which is bigger, grander and more spectacular than ever before. The manual animation mixes the ancient with the modern and brings the trials of Odysseus to a whole new audience through music and image in the atmospheric setting of Battersea Arts Centre’s Council Chamber. This powerful depiction of the archetypal love story opens on February 14th, providing a unique Valentine’s Day alternative for those who are lucky and lost in love alike. The production will be complemented by a range of thematic accompaniments including Trojan horses and Greek food in BAC’s Café/Bar. Founded in 2004 by Nicholas Rawling, with Imogen Charleston and Christopher Reed, The Paper Cinema tour bespoke pieces around Britain and internationally. The company’s previous work has included critically acclaimed, Total Theatre Award nominated Night Flyer & King Pest, staged at BAC in 2008, and The Rock Charmer, an extraordinary work projected on to the cliffs above Winspit as part of Inside Out Dorset Festival. Scratch – An inclusive process of developing work that involves the audience from the onset. Developed by BAC twelve years ago, Scratch is a process of testing ideas that embraces experimentation and learning, principals which lie at the heart of our core values. In a practical sense this means artists sharing in-development-work with an audience, who then help enrich the work through their immediate response, feedback and sometimes direct involvement. BAC’s role is that of a producer, mediating the collaboration between artist and audience. Programme Model Cook Up – Creating new work by supporting artists and enabling audiences to get creative There are three to four Cook Up seasons a year, which combine the most exciting finished work with Scratched sharings of work in development by artists in the building. Each week within a season there is an average of five artists or companies in residence working with BAC. We provide complete support from rehearsal space to funding in order to develop new productions. From Thursday to Saturday each week audiences are invited to BAC to get stuck into a creative dialogue with the artists, with the aim of inventing the Future of Theatre though involvement and collaboration. Tuck In – Regular playground projects where artists and audiences create theatre across our building Periodically throughout the year, BAC explores the creative possibilities of its building with major productions. Cooked Up with audiences through BAC Scratch Nights, these productions are an opportunity for thousands of people to Tuck In to the very best of BAC. Previous Tuck In productions include Kneehigh’s The Red Shoes and two ONE-ON-ONE Festivals. Take Out – BAC co-productions presented across London, nationally and internationally Co-Productions that develop through BAC’s Scratch Nights can go on to become part of our emerging touring programme. We want audiences far beyond our home in Battersea to share in our discovery of tomorrow’s theatre. The touring programme launched in August 2011 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where an exciting new theatre programme was presented in partnership with Summerhall. Since then we have Taken Out work to festivals such as Latitude, and toured productions of The Great Escape and Paper Cinema’s The Odyssey.
