Lakeside congregation began in 5715, so this is our 60th High Holy Days as a community. With sorrow we notice that in that time other congregations have come and gone. That should remind us that we cannot take community for granted. Community does not happen unless we participate in it, and keep it alive. Therefore, I look forward to seeing you at services beginning with Rosh Hashanah on the evening of September 24. Even though we don’t often study the text of Jonah it has a message for us about community. Everyone thinks they know the story of how Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Actually, it’s not a whale. In Hebrew the word is dag, a fish, a big fish. And since every word in Hebrew has a gender, it is a big male fish. A peculiarity of the text is that later in the story, it says Jonah was swallowed by a daggah, a female fish. Is there a meaning to this discrepancy? Of course, our ancestors found meaning here. The commentary suggests that Jonah was first swallowed by the dag, the male fish. “Jonah entered the fish’s mouth like someone who enters into a large synagogue. The fish’s eyes were like two large windows for Jonah to see through.” The fish swims all over the world and Jonah sees all of God’s miracles. Jonah feels a sense of understanding, even joy. The fish says to Jonah, “Pray and you will be answered.” But Jonah sits in the sanctuary, in the belly of the fish for three days and does not pray a word. Finally the male fish spits Jonah out, and in our commentary, Jonah is immediately swallowed again, this time by a daggah, a female fish. This time, in her belly, Jonah finds himself surrounded by 365,000 baby fish. Rather than being an observer, Jonah becomes a participant. The dag spews Jonah out, the daggah gives birth to him. He is reborn, and only then does Jonah turn to prayer. We are too much like Jonah. When we perceive that things are going well, we forget to say thank you. Too often we only turn to God for FRIDAY, August 29 th 6:00pm start time Come wearing your favorite team’s jersey! All prospective members welcome! For play-by-play information and additional game-time questions, please contact Hilary at (847) 432-7950. Join Lakeside for a our own motives. We turn to God in our pain. When the High Holy Days roll around, we think about atonement, we want God’s mercy and forgiveness. Most of the time we are like Jonah in the dag. We are content to look out at the world without getting involved. We forget that we need to be with others. Once in a while we catch a glimpse, like a glimmer off the reflective scales of a passing fish that reminds us that the world needs our participation. These are the moments when true prayer and return to the ideals of our faith can be seen. This year, our 60th year, let us try to raise our awareness. We should try and act for the good of others, even when their needs are just swimming around us, or even when we are comfortable in our own homes. When we turn to God, to faith, to tradition, not from our own needs, but for the good of others then our return is truly an act of service to God. It is in community that we find out what it means to be human. May you be blessed for a Happy and Healthy New Year, and may you turn to the world, and do what you can to make it better. Page 3 LAKESIDE CONGREGATION FOR REFORM JUDAISM From the Educator — Vanessa M. Ehrlich, RJE, Educational Director Summer is a time to renew and revive, and I would like to add a third R to your list: Register. Of course I need everyone to register for Religious and Hebrew Schools as soon as possible. It is never too late to start, so even if you are reading this in September please come and register your children for school. Just a reminder that Religious School is for students ages Kindergarten through 10 Grade, confirmation. Our Hebrew School begins in 3rd grade and continues through 6th grade. In 7th grade our students have private appointments with Rabbi Serotta, Cantor Davis and myself. I also encourage those who have college students or know some college students you can now register them for Hillel and wherever they attend university their Hillel will contact them. This has been very successful nationwide and I know that this is a great way for students to stay connected Jewishly. You must know the student’s email, phone and what school they are attending. You fill out a form and Hillel will contact your student, call the Lakeside Office for more information:http://goo.gl/Q4Jw48 If you have already registered your children for school or Hillel I believe you should look into something for yourself, register and try it out. At Lakeside you are lucky that you can drop in every Sunday morning beginning Sunday September 14 for our Adult Enrichment program. This year we have many interesting programs and will have a “bookmark” for you by the High Holy Days. Some speakers of interest this fall include: Arthur Feldman, Judaica expert who will be here on October 26 and will be able look at your Jewish treasures and tell you something about them. He has some great stories about our Lakeside treasures you will find interesting. On September 21 we will hear about the Jewish Film Festival coming in October. Page 4 LAKESIDE CONGREGATION FOR REFORM JUDAISM From the President — Jack Kaplan, President This year we celebrate our 60th anniversary as a congregation. In the Bible, the number 60 occurs several times, for example as the age of Isaac when Jacob and Esau were born and the number of warriors escorting King Solomon. At a time when so many organizations and businesses come and go and enduring into double digits is considered a major accomplishment, we are now entering four score as a vital Jewish institution serving Reform Jews in the north shore suburban communities of Chicago in a warm, open, welcoming home. Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism was born before it had a name. It began as the School for Judaism in Highland Park. Like our neighbor the Chicago Botanical Garden, we eventually planted our roots along Lake Cook Road on the other side of the county line and have grown and flourished ever since. This anniversary provides all of us with an opportunity to renew our commitment and sense of personal responsibility for the continued strength and vitality of the Jewish people and our ability to participate in all areas of Jewish community life. Over the next year we have many events planned to help honor and celebrate our strengths, our values, our achievements to date. But we also must plan for our future so that we can pass on the enduring values of Lakeside to our children and the children of other families who live in the surrounding communities and are looking for a spiritual home. L’dor v dor. From generation to generation. It is the obligation, the duty of those of us who have benefited from the community we have created at Lakeside to pass it on to others. This spring, a season of hope and renewal, during the Passover holiday, we initiated a membership campaign titled “Not too Big, Not Too Small, Just Right.” We believe this captures the essence of the values represented by Lakeside. We are big enough to provide our members with the full array of quality programs, services and events they expect from their synagogue. We offer our congregants a variety of ways to engage in their own Jewish journey through different approaches to study, prayer and service, Torah, Tefilla and Tzedakah as it is written over our Ark. At the same time we are small enough for every family, every individual to feel they are part of our community through friendship, through fellowship, through good times and bad. It is the events and programs and services that typically draw members through our doors; it is the sense of community, or Kehillah, the final word over the Ark, that keeps them connected and builds the bonds that allow all of us to share a richer and more meaningful journey together. Our membership campaign is a critical initiative coming at a time when Lakeside, like many other Jewish institutions throughout Chicago and around the country face challenges, based partly on the poor economy we are still encountering and partly on demographic trends in the Jewish community which has seen shrinking numbers due to later marriage, lower birthrates and a steadily aging population. A key undertaking is to maintain and grow our membership to provide the resources, both human and financial, necessary to sustain the vitality of our institution. We will build on current efforts and develop new ways to promote the value of membership at Lakeside. This will be communicated in a variety of ways externally to attract new members and internally to retain and increase engagement of our current congregants. I call on you to serve as ambassadors at large to let your family, your friends, and your Not too BIG, Not too small, Just right. colleagues know the special place that Lakeside is to you. Bring them to a service; invite them to a social event. Be that personal poster child for Lakeside. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our clergy, staff and board leadership for their devotion, commitment and many contributions over the past year. We are blessed with a Rabbi, who challenges and educates us with his intellect, comforts us in times of trouble and loss and celebrates with us on all occasions large and small. We are blessed to have a Cantor who inspires us through a rich array of liturgical music and prayer and prepares our b’nai mitzvah students to chant their Torah portions with confidence. And we are blessed Page 5 LAKESIDE CONGREGATION FOR REFORM JUDAISM From the President, Con’t. to have a Religious Educator who demonstrates her passion and love for Jewish learning through her continued leadership of our Religious and Hebrew School and an instrumental role in all of our educational programs and is now beginning her 25th year at Lakeside. And we are blessed to have an office manager, who just a few years ago came to us as an administrative assistant and has grown into a capable manger running our very busy office and supervising our two newest staff members, Hilary Bryant and Kristy Scher. My deepest thanks and gratitude to Rabbi Serotta, Cantor Davis, Vanessa Ehrlich and Allison Gelman for all you have done for Lakeside this past year. We have also been blessed with an outstanding executive committee and board this year that I am confident will continue to enable us to achieve our goals as a vital, vibrant Jewish institution. Save the Date for Lakeside’s H SUKKA USE OPEN HO Sunday, October 12th in Rabbi Serotta’s backyard! For more information, call the Lakeside office at (847) 432-7950. They have gone the extra yard in so many ways this past year for which I am grateful and I look forward to their continued leadership this coming year. I would also like to acknowledge our two recent outgoing board members Ron Orgiefsky and Elaine Greenberg. Ron has served on our board only a short time but has played a leadership role concerning all of our communications and as co-chair of Mitzvah Day for the past two years. And Elaine has been a longer standing board member, membership chair and advocate for personal engagement and action in both our outreach to new members and in reach to current ones. They and all of our board members deserve our sincere appreciation. I close with another number-120. Double 60. The average human lifespan continues to increase but differs by where you live, who you were born to, but most importantly, the support and resources you are provided with. The optimal length of life is echoed in the conventional blessing “You should live until 120!” Rabbinic literature records several scholars within the historic period of the Mishnah who lived for 120 years. But the most famous individual whose 120year lifespan is explicitly recorded in the Torah was one of the greatest Jewish leaders of them all: Moses. As we celebrate one milestone this year I look forward to joining with all of you as the Lakeside community doubles down on its journey as a vital Jewish institution serving the needs and interests of all its members. Adult Enrichment — Marty Portnoy and Dan Blaustein, Co-chairs Welcome to August, which means that the 2014-2015 Sunday Adult Enrichment program series is right around the corner! All of us on the committee are hard at work making the final plans for what should be another exciting year. The first program is on Sunday, August 17, when our own Cantor Michael Davis will enlighten us on some fascinating aspects about the Hebrew language. Other topics in this year’s lineup of programs include an Antiques Roadshow-style program about Judaica, a “Sharing Stories” panel discussion on Jewish values, a special program dedicated to Lakeside’s 60th Anniversary, and more. Page 6 All programs are on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, with a complimentary bagel and lox brunch served 15 minutes before the start. Guests are always welcome. We hope to see you there. Adult Enrichment Wants You! Do you have a topic of special interest that you would like to share in a Sunday Adult Enrichment program? We are seeking dedicated individuals to join our committee to help us plan, promote, and produce these Sunday programs. Please see Vanessa Ehrlich for more information. LAKESIDE CONGREGATION FOR REFORM JUDAISM From the Children’s Center — Paula Davis, Children’s Center Director The school year 2014-2015 is about to begin and we are so happy to welcome many new families to our ever growing pack. The addition of some wonderful enrichment programs is sure to attract those moving to our neighborhood. My fantastic and extremely dedicated staff will all be returning to help make this the best year EVER! We are small but MIGHTY! And just like all of Lakeside we are not too big, not too small, just right!!! Please take a look at all we have to offer on the website. The calendar is up and we welcome visitors to join us at our various activities throughout the year. All of us at the Children’s Center wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year! L’Shana Tovah Summer Camp Fun! Page 7 LAKESIDE CONGREGATION FOR REFORM JUDAISM Sisterhood The Women of Lakeside Our Story Whether through our Sisterhood, Rosh Chodesh group, or simply helping to coordinate the many Lakeside programs, Lakeside women have a lasting impact on our entire community. Once again Sisterhood has been a steadfast supporter of Lakeside through our camp scholarships, educational programs, Caring Community program, and social events. Last year’s activities included… › O ur Sisterhood Shabbat honoring the role of women in our community. It provided a forum for us to pray together and a warm and cozy respite from our cold winter. Once again Robbie Hartman and Debi Shandling led our music and women’s choir - Rickie Cowin led the service - and board members provided a sensational fondue oneg. › W e closed our gift shop, but are now providing an opportunity to purchase a much wider assortment of judaica through Lakeside’s website. A portion of the proceeds supports Sisterhood, and thereby Lakeside, through gifts for bar and bat mitzvahs, camp scholarships, and Religious School challah. Our closing inventory sale was spearheaded by Ceilanne Libber, Blair Waddick, Lynda Maram, and Linda Alexander; and supported by many Sisterhood volunteers. › S isterhood’s opening meeting combined a social action project with an opportunity to schmooze and sample a variety of gourmet latkes prepared by Lakeside member Lance Raphael. Sisterhood members and their guests created baskets of items for newborns of women with AIDS, who have been born AIDS-free, as part of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Basket of Hope Layette program. The project was coordinated Page 8 by Elissa Whiteman, Ceilanne Libber and Susan Baron, and more than 100 items were donated by Lakeside members. › W e had our annual Ravinia event, last July and also supported Lakeside social events including Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast and the Red Tent Journey. This year the women of Lakeside have also had the opportunity to share spiritually, through a Rosh Chodesh program led by Judy Cohan, Ceilanne Libber and Carole Wald. Based on the tradition of Jewish women gathering to celebrate the new moon, Rosh Chodesh gives us the chance Lakeside’s diverse programming and membership continues to demonstrate our relevance to today’s Jewish women. to connect with our community and ourselves. Meeting in Lakeside members’ homes, participants share personal thoughts and feelings in a warm, open and inviting setting. Lakeside continues to support and participate in Women for Reform Judaism, better known as WRJ. We hosted the annual Area Day for the Chicago metropolitan area, including a service led by Lakeside, educational workshops and a luncheon featuring state representative Elaine Nekritz. Over 80 women participated this year in the event on empowering women and there were sessions on both personal and leadership growth. Lakeside is represented on WRJ’s national board and district executive committee, and we are regular participants in leadership development programs throughout the country. All Lakeside women are invited to participate in these activities. This 100 year old organization has played an integral role in supporting our youth, through the founding and financial support of NFTY, as well as ongoing scholarships for clergy, and worldwide support for the reform movement. They unite and bind each of us with many sisters throughout the world. It is only through working together that we accomplish so much. Lakeside’s diverse programming and membership continues to demonstrate our relevance to today’s Jewish women. We pray together… we play together… we truly are the collective voice for women within our community. This success is due to the support of many individuals, but a few women have done so much to plan and coordinate all of these activities, our Sisterhood board of directors: J anet Buckstein Shari Keene Rosann Epner Ceilanne Libber Robin Friedman Ellen Meyers Julie Hoffman Elissa Whiteman Nancy Hollins These women, and many other volunteers, planned and ran programs, provided congregational support, and created a home and haven for friendship and mutual support. Their passion and commitment to shared goals has made Lakeside’s Sisterhood a sustaining force and nurturer of our congregational family. So for all of you who have been part of this success, our congregation thanks you. For those of you have not yet joined us, we welcome you! Most importantly, your support of Lakeside Congregation’s Sisterhood makes a difference! Your membership helps meet the goals of our congregation and maintain our commitment to Lakeside’s families and the broader community. LAKESIDE CONGREGATION FOR REFORM JUDAISM Unsung Hero Ron Orgiefsky, his wife Meredith and their son Ross have been members at Lakeside since 2005. Ron has served on the Board of Directors since 2011 and just recently finished his term. Ron chaired the Communication Committee and spent many hours looking over our communication plans for the future. Ron has also chaired two Mitzvah Days and is always on hand to help out. We so appreciate all of the time, effort and good opinions that Ron has given Lakeside and we thank him for being an unsung hero. Gabbie will be surrounded by her parents, Robert and Ellen and two older siblings, Josh and Lauren. She will also share this special day with her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Gabbie is a 7 th grader at North Shore Country Day School where she proudly represents the Raiders on their volleyball, basketball and soccer teams. Gabbie also plays travel soccer for FC United and travel volleyball for Club Momentum. When she is not playing sports, Gabbie is interested in waterskiing, wake boarding, acting and traveling. Throughout the year, Gabbie volunteered her time at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville for her mitzvah project. She, along with her family, helped hand pack meals for malnourished children to be shipped around the world. It was truly a special opportunity to do something together as a family to help Gabbie commemorate her upcoming Bat Mitzvah. Page 10 LAKESIDE CONGREGATION FOR REFORM JUDAISM ARZA Join ARZA (Association of Reform Zionists of America) ARZA’s Mission ARZA (pronounced AHR-tzah) is a pretty clever name. It’s a Hebrew word meaning “toward the Land (of Israel),” and it’s also an acronym for the “Association of Reform Zionists of America.” ARZA is the national membership organization that connects Reform Jews with Israel. But what does the name mean? What is a Reform Zionist? Is it simply a Zionist who happens to be a Reform Jew but who otherwise is kind of like any other Zionist? Or is there something uniquely Reform about our Zionism? And while we’re at it, what’s a Zionist? A Zionist is a proponent of Zionism, a movement founded in the late 19th century to create a Jewish homeland in the land of Israel, then known as Palestine. But that goal of Zionism was fulfilled in May, 1948, with the declaration of Israel’s independence. Since then, most people understand Zionism as a movement that supports Israel and works to make Israel the best, most ideal Jewish state it can be. Reform Zionism is Zionism infused with the values and principles cherished by Reform Judaism, including religious equality for women and men, a commitment to tikkun olam (literally “world repair,” i.e., social justice), the creation by individuals of meaningful Jewish lives through informed choice, and so on. Some of those characteristics are shared by other forms of Zionism while others are unique to Reform Zionism. But within these fairly vague parameters, Reform Zionist thinkers don’t actually agree completely on the details of Reform Zionism. You can get a sense for the range of views by looking at “An Open Conversation About Reform Judaism,” a project initiated by ARZA in the spring of 2008. Questions? Page 11 LAKESIDE CONGREGATION FOR REFORM JUDAISM Choir Chat — Bob Benton, Choir Member Listen! It’s very faint, but if you listen carefully you can hear it in the wind. As I write this, we haven’t yet had our annual choir potluck dinner, the reward we give ourselves for a most successful and inspirational season among good friends and happy times, but the distinct sounds are blowing in the wind, calling us for what comes very shortly, the familiar airs of the High Holy Days. We’ve learned, rehearsed, sung and taken to heart the wonderful teachings and techniques given to us by the most talented and patient Richard Boldrey and accompanied by the amazing Bill Crowle, making a real choir out of a group of enthusiastic and dedicated amateurs. Last (religious) year’s services and songs are behind us, but the echoes are, for most of us, indelible and lasting, but as a congregation, we know you’ll ask “So what have you done for us lately?” And we are proud to say that we start our rehearsals for the holidays on August 7th with one to two rehearsals per week until the Join Youth Choir! NEW! LAKESIDE’S YOUTH CHOIR! led by Todd Kessler ALL GRADES ARE WELCOME! JUST SHOW UP! Sundays beginning September 14th from 9:30am-10:00am Youth Choir is held every Sunday morning that Religious School is in session Page 12 services begin. Please know that there are places in the choir for whoever would like to learn, to sing, and to join a marvelous group. You need only talk to any one of us, or to Richard, and we can take it from there. Our responsibilities include a monthly choir Shabbat service, holiday responsibilities in concert (pun intended) with the season, the ever-entertaining Purim Spiel, the Lakeside Café, Mitzvah Day entertainment for those who may benefit from it, and other things of which we’re not even aware. We’re a good and spirited chavurah (a family within a temple family), and we’d love to add you to it. In the meantime, we’ll be back to work and awaiting your joining our audience and singing from there or from the bimah. LAKESIDE CONGREGATION FOR REFORM JUDAISM t S h a l a a at Kab bb b brand new!
