October 2014 Issue No. 3 THE REPORT Davy Beecroft’s Triple Slam Hunting Trip flyingbranch.com Our newsletter of the recent adventures and the upcoming events at the Flying B Ranch by Jeremi Syron - Flying B Ranch Guide Davy Beecroft arrived at the Flying B Ranch last spring for a combination Bear, Turkey, and Salmon trip. He was accompanied by his parents who decided to enjoy the numerous retreat activities offered by the ranch including: Jeep Tours Viewing the Ranch’s Historical Cave Whitewater Rafting and Salmon Fishing The first day of Davy's adventure found him turkey hunting with guide, Chad Weber. Chad lured an elusive tom into Davy’s sites. The power of the shot knocked the turkey down, but the tough old bird got up and flew off. They searched the rest of the morning for ol' tom, but had no luck getting the bird tracked down. Disappointed, they decided to focus on the evening bear hunt. Sam, Davy’s father, joined us for an exciting night on the bear bait. Sitting in a tree stand 20 yards from the bait, Davy was determined to harvest a bear with his bow A combination of Bear, Salmon, and Turkey hunts are just a few of the adventures at the Flying B Ranch. We saw signs of a bear in the area and our thoughts turned optimistic. By 5pm, Sam and I were settled in the nearby rifle blind to watch for the evening. I must have made myself a little too comfortable, as I remember waking up to the sounds of a bear rummaging through the bait area. I sat up just in time to see the big bear circling the bait, and I thought to myself, "Wow, I wonder what Davy is thinking?" The bear was focused on the bait and I could barely hear Davy make his shot with precision. It was an excellent shot! I could hear the bear lay down less than 40 yards from the shot. Davy wanted his first bear to be with a bow, and he made it happen. We transported the bear back to the ridge for photos. It was also a much easier area to start skinning. We made it back down to the truck just after dark. The next morning, Davy and Chad were back calling turkeys at first light. They set up across the canyon from the previous morning’s action. It was a slow morning for locating turkeys. Chad was glassing the area where they had attempted a shot at a turkey the previous morning, and could not believe what he saw....the same turkey...with a few feathers missing! They drove back across the canyon to get a closer set up on the bird. Eventually, they had the ol' tom pinned down. Chad put Davy in a good position for another opportunity and Davy made sure he was successful this time! "Bang!" Davy 1 - Turkey 0. The score was settled. The next day, Davy and his parents ventured out to do some salmon fishing. Between the three of them, they caught four salmon! Daily adventures are what it's all about at the Flying B Ranch. Thank you to the Beecroft's for another great trip to the Flying B Ranch. Blog Post: Back Country Bear Hunting Experience by Jeremi Syron - Flying B Ranch Guide It was very physical and tiring through the long steep stretch. By the time we made it to the creek, it had turned into a full day, and we still had to return to camp. With the bear still lingering in the same spot, we were confident it would be there the next day. We would try again. Testimonials: “From the start, being greeted in the parking lot to the extremely competent guides for the bear hunt, I had an outstanding time. Every expectation I might have had was exceeded. From the facilities, to the food, to the hunt itself, everything was equal and to the highest standards. You do yourselves proud!” Keith B. “Our trip was awesome, and we had a great time. The countryside was absolutely beautiful. The Flying B personnel were great. I took two bears. A black and a brown. Taylor missed one and really didn't get another opportunity. But we had a blast. Thanks so much... Hopefully we'll get a chance to enjoy that experience again in the future.
