A confederacy is a united group of people,
states, or countries. Confederacy means “the
group of eleven Southern states that seceded
from the United States in 1860 and 1861.”
When you refer to that group of states, you
capitalize Confederacy. Let’s say the word

state government of Virginia argued
before voting to join the Confederacy.
What does the Confederacy mean in this

Introduce The winners enjoy a moment
of glory. Glory means “fame or great praise
and honor given by others to someone or
something.” Let’s say the word together: glory.
•I’m going to tell you a sentence. After her
concert, the singer basked in the glory
of a standing ovation. What does glory
mean? Let’s say the meaning together.
Demonstrate No glory is given to a student
who is caught cheating on a test. Over time,
a leader’s acts may bring her glory. Reuben
heroically saved a man from drowning, but he
wanted none of the glory.
•I’m going to describe some actions. If you
think the person deserves glory for his
or her action, say “Glory.” If you do not
think the person deserves glory, say “No

can be upsetting. What began as a difference

•Imagine you and your best friend have
had a quarrel. Now you realize the
quarrel was silly and you are sorry for
what you said. Show how you make up
with your friend.

or fight against any power or restriction.”
Often rebellion refers to revolt or armed
resistance against a government. Let’s say the

rebellion.
Demonstrate The Civil War was not a
small rebellion. The general watched for
rebellion among the troops. If the king’s
demands become too great, rebellion is
certain to follow.

or condition of being united. Union refers to
the states that supported the U.S. government
during the Civil War. When the word Union
refers to these states, it is capitalized. Let’s say

something or someone you think he was
fighting for. Write a sentence about your
picture. Use the words the Union in your
sentence.
Demonstrate The Union army wore dark
blue uniforms. The Union army had more
soldiers and supplies than the Confederate
army. The O’Leary brothers fought for the
Union.
Apply Why might the federal government of

•List at least three groups of people that
