Peanut/Nut Free “Safe” Snacks

Peanut and Nut Free “Safe” Snacks
The safest snacks are those marked as “Peanut & Nut Free” on the manufacturer’s
labeling – they are clearly marked with a peanut/nut free symbol on the packaging.
Some examples of these are:
a) Dare Bear Paw cookies and crackers (they come in several flavours)
b) Dare Breton Minis (crackers)
c) Quaker Chewy Granola Bars & President’s Choice Granola Bars (NOTE:
ONLY the granola bars with the “Peanut/Nut Free” symbol are safe. Quaker
and President’s Choice also produce other granola bars that contain nuts)
d) President’s Choice Breakfast Bars (fruit filled)
e) Dare Fruit Gummies, Fruit Minis and Wagon Wheels
f) Chapman’s Ice Cream and Frozen Treats (NOTE: not all Chapman’s products
are nut free)
g) Hershey’s Twizzlers and Nibs
h) No Name Crispy Rice Marshmallow Treats
i) Nestle’s Snack Size Smarties, Coffee Crisp, Kit Kat and Aero chocolate bars
(NOTE: the regular size chocolate bars are NOT peanut/nut free)
In addition to the above, the following snacks are not marked as “Peanut/Nut Free” on
the manufacturer’s labeling, but we have spoken to each manufacturer and feel that
they are also safe. As ingredients often change, the most important thing is to check
each product for peanuts/tree nuts/shellfish in the ingredient list, every time.
a) Sunmaid Raisin Oatmeal cookies, Sunmaid Raisins
b) Pepperidge Farms Goldfish crackers
c) Christie Arrowroot cookies (plain and banana)
d) Christie Premium Plus crackers
e) General Mills Plain Cheerios
f) Frito Lay Chips (Lays, Tostitos, Chee-tos – Puffs/Crunchy/Corn Twists)
Other great options, of course, are fresh fruits or vegetables. (NOTE: fruits and
vegetables from deli platters are unsafe because there is the possibility of cross
contamination from other foods made/served in the deli)
If you want to bring homemade treats/baking to the school, we just ask that you use
clean utensils and cooking pans, and really wipe down your counter well with soap. In
order for X to be able to enjoy these at school with his classmates, could you please
call us beforehand to discuss ingredients? We can then confirm with the teacher that
they are safe for X. Thank you in advance.

WHAT TO AVOID:
a) Products (bread, buns, cakes, cookies, etc.) from bakeries that make items with
nuts or peanuts (which is most bakeries). There is a risk of cross
contamination.
b) Unpackaged products from any bulk store/bin. The scoop for the raisins,
smarties, gummies, etc. may have been used in the peanut bin.
c) The many fast food retailers that warn about the possibility of cross
contamination and/or peanuts/nuts in their products (ie. Tim Horton’s, Dairy
Queen, etc.)
If you are interested in “Nut Free” bakeries, there are a few that cater to the
“Peanut/Nut Free” safety issue, including the following:
a) Cakes by Robert (Thornhill)
905-889-1448
b) The Cupcake Shoppe (Yonge &Broadway)
416-322-6648
c) Katies Cakes (O’Connor & Eglinton)
416-757-6896
d) Amazing Donuts (Bathurst & Wilson)
416-398-7546
e) Lollicakes (Mt. Pleasant & Belsize)
416-482-2253
Please Note
This list/document has been provided by YYY, parents of XXX. It is by no means all
inclusive or exhaustive. There are many other snacks that are peanut/tree nut/shellfish
free.
The most important thing is to check products for Peanuts/Tree nuts/Shellfish in the
ingredient list or messages at the bottom of the ingredient list such as “May contain
traces of peanuts, tree nuts or shellfish” or “This product is manufactured in a
facility where there are peanuts and/or tree nuts and/or shellfish”.
If you have any questions, we would be happy to answer them. Thank you so much
for your attention to this matter.
