in their studies
because they

Study Skills are Key to Academic Success
“Study skills are fundamental to
academic competence. Effective
study skills are associated with
positive outcomes across
multiple academic content
areas and for diverse learners.”

“Academic competence is
associated with
the knowledge and
application of effective
study skills. Capable
students at all grade levels
may experience difficulty in
school, not because they lack
ability, but because they lack
good study skills. Although

skills independently, even
normally achieving students
may go through school
without having acquired
effective approaches for
studying (Nicaise &
Gettinger,1995).
Implementing study-skills
instruction relies on an
understanding of the
theoretical foundation for
teaching and using study
skills, as well as knowledge
of current research on the
effectiveness of study
strategies.” “Study skills
are viewed as academic
enablers; they function as
critical tools for learning.
Study skills encompass a
range of coordinated
cognitive skills and
processes that enhance the
effectiveness and
efficiency of students’
learning (Devine, 1987)”

Memory Techniques
“While memory is crucial
for all of us, there is no
time during which memory
demands are greater than
the school years.”
http://www.cdl.org/resourcelibrary/articles/memory.php
Memory Techniques
include: “
Acronyms
An acronym is a very
common memory
device. It uses an
abbreviation that takes
the first letter in each
word to be
remembered to form a
new word. Check out
the familiar acronyms
below. What do they
stand for? NOTE:
Some acronyms use
two letters from one
word.
RAM
CPU
PBS
NATO
Acrostics
Although you probably
never heard the term
"acrostic," you are
familiar with its use.
An acrostic is very
similar to an acronym.
However, instead of
using the first letters
to spell a single word,
these letters are used
to spell different words
that form a sentence
or memorable phrase.
The classification
scheme for living
things might be a
familiar acrostic: King
Philip Came Over For
Great Spaghetti is a
difficult phrase to
forget. Therefore, it
remains a great tool
for remembering:
Kingdom, phylum,
class, order, family,
genus, species.”

More Memory Techniques
“Chunking
Chunking is another
memory trick that
helps recall by limiting
items to smaller
"chunks." For example,
a phone number is
often remembered
(and recited) as three
distinct chunks such as
202-931-8956.
Memorizing these
three discrete chunks
is more effective than
memorizing a series of

10 numbers
(2029318956). What's
your social security
number? Chances are
you've chunked its
recall into three or four
separate number
series. So which chunk
size is best? Design a
strategy for inquiry
that would explore the
most effective chunk
size in memorizing a
series of numbers.
Then, employ friends
and family to assist in
your research”

Repetition
“Repetition is a technique for
remembering facts in which
you read, write, and say the
facts a number of times. Use
repetition when you want to
remember a few facts, usually
not more than four or five
facts.
How to use repetition
1.
Read the facts.
2. Write the facts.
3. Say the facts
4. Repeat the steps
three or more
times.”

Graphic Organizer
“Graphic Organizers are
visual techniques for
remembering information
that contains a topic,
subtopics, and details.
Use a graphic Organizer
when you want to show
how a topic, subtopics and
details go together.
How to use graphic
organizers

each subtopic.

“Here is something you
should know.”
“I wouldn’t forget this
point, if I were you.”
“Remember this.”
