Online / Hybrid Tune-Up – Carrie Jones, Jonathon Cohen, Craig Keigher, Jacob Fansler, John Babich, Rexann McKinley, Trisha Dandurand
This is an open forum where you can self-evaluate your current online or hybrid course using a rubric that will be provided, look at examples of
other online and hybrid courses to get ideas for your own, and hear KCC student’ opinions on what makes an online or hybrid course good or bad.
Free Will / Determinism – Ken West
Are we, as human beings, free—i.e., are we in control of our behavior? Or is it better to think of human behavior as determined entirely by factors
outside of our control? Arguments for both views will be explored. If there is sufficient time, a brief discussion of whether moral responsibility
requires free will will be included.
Expectations of Student Behavior – Trisha Dandurand, Rexann McKinley, Jennifer Huggins, Jennifer Pecora, Amy Porter
Expectations for student behavior vary from professor to professor; however, in many cases students must figure out individual instructor
expectations with little to no guidance. During this breakout session, the necessity for clear expectations will be discussed, a group of instructors
will share their expectations for student behavior, we will discuss how to disseminate expectations to students, and participants will begin
developing their own list of expectations.
Order in the Court, or How I Spent My Summer Vacation at the U.S. Supreme Court – Kris Condon
In June 2013, KCC was one of two community colleges selected for the first time to participate in the United States Supreme Court Summer
Institute for Teachers in Washington, D.C. For five days, I learned about the Court’s inner workings and how the Institute is extending its influence
on civics education to the community college. Come and learn more about the issues facing us as we teach our students to be more civically
engaged in this interactive presentation. . . . Let’s see how much you know about the Court!
Teaching Organization to Your Developmental Students: Binder Requirement – Ruth Fabbro
A rubric will be given for a binder requirement. This includes not only note taking and storage of papers, but chapter summaries and journaling.
A list of sample journal questions and some examples of guided note taking will be given.
Becoming a Star Professor: Using STARLINK Professional Development – Robin Hustedt, Amy Porter, Mary Steichen
In this session, presenters will introduce an amazing (FREE!) resource offered by KCC to professors for professional development opportunities.
Focus is on student perspectives, teaching strategies, and classroom management methods. Clips include ideas from Nanny 9-1-1 For the
Professor, Teaching With Style, Creating the Active Classroom, and What the Best Teachers Do In Class and Online.
Classroom Strategies from the First Day Forward: Idea Videos from STARLINK – John Bordeau, Scott Kistler
KCC has a membership in STARLINK, a website with an abundance of professional development video resources. John Bordeau and Scott Kistler
have selected a few short “Idea Videos” from the library that give suggestions on how instructors can make their expectations clear and help
students to learn and think well. Some time for discussion will follow each video.
