IN THIS CLASS YOU WILL: Continue to build on musical skills learned from beginning band Learn how to read more challenging music Learn about music theory Learn about great musicians of the past and present Perform for family and friends Learn how to be a performing musician IN THIS CLASS YOU ARE EXPECTED TO: Practice at home Send Ms. Kossler your SMART Music assignments by the due date Bring music, work book, pencil, and instrument to class every day Be seated and ready to rehearse 2 minutes after the tardy bell Learn and test off on all your music Put your instrument and your music in the place assigned Be supportive of fellow musicians at all times IN THIS CLASS YOU WILL NOT: Talk while Ms. Kossler is on the podium Play your instrument until asked Eat or chew gum Touch another person’s instrument Use foul language Be negative toward others in class SEVERE CLAUSE: (automatic referral and possible dismissal from band) Defiance of director’s directions Running in the band room Causing harm to anyone in the band room Touching the white board, podium, or Ms. Kossler’s desk without expressed permission Cause a substitute to report your behavior as inappropriate Touching another student’s belongings HOW YOU ARE GRADED: Academic – one grade deducted after 4 marks from below Missed SMART Music submission of weekly practice homework assignments Not having instrument, music, or pencil during class Being tardy Not having instrument or music in proper place after class HOW YOU ARE GRADED: Citizenship – one grade deducted after 4 marks from below Playing or talking at the wrong times Eating or chewing gum Touching another student’s instrument Using foul language Being negative to another student Band Member Agreement – Golden Eagle Band As a member of the Golden Eagle Band Band at San Elijo Middle School for the 2016-2017 school year: I understand that: • • • • • • • I will need to demonstrate my musical competence (pass off) on all music assignments before attending each field trip (see below) It is mandatory that I attend the Pre-Festival Concert (February 22nd) in order to participate in the festivals for the year. A written excuse from my parent or guardian addressed to Ms. Kossler is needed in the case of an unavoidable circumstance where I cannot attend Concert Attire for Concert Band is: black dress pants (no jeans), black dress shoes (no sneakers), black socks that cover my ankles, white, pleated, tuxedo dress shirt with a wing tip collar, gold bow tie I need my concert attire by October 14th for Band Picture Day I will be required to wear my Band T-shirt to change into on all field trips. I will come prepared for class with my instrument and all supplies (reeds, organized music & pencil). I will practice at home and complete smartmusic assignments Important Dates to Remember • • • • • Band Picture Day – Fri, October 14th Fall Concert (held at SEMS) - November 17th Pre-Festival Concert (at San Marcos High School) - February 22nd Spring Concert (at the Moonlight Theater in Vista) – May 24th Band Awards night (held at SEMS) –June 7th Field Trips/Festivals Music Festivals provide students with an opportunity to perform outside of school, in front of adjudicators who rate the band’s performance against set national criteria, and provide feedback on ways they can improve as musicians. Such field trips also give students the chance to see other schools play. Our trips to Temecula and Knotts Berry Farm are events of this type. At Disneyland the students take part in a musical workshop organized by Disney. In all 3 cases the students enjoy some fun afterwards. Transportation Costs Per District Policy, the San Marcos Unified School District requires Band to use their yellow school buses to attend off-campus events. We request a donation of $25 to cover your student transportation cost for the entire school year. You can make check payable to SEMS Band Boosters. Approx.
