The Rays are trailing in the series after two losses to the Swamp Power Play Goals Assists Rabbits in Greenville by scores of 6-3 and 4-1 on Thursday and Friday. Rays’ captain Joe Devin scored the team’s only goal of the game on a power play in the second period. South Carolina outshot Greenville 40-31 in the contest. Parker Milner made the start and stopped a total of 27 shots for South Carolina. The Stingrays were 1-for-6 on the power play, while Greenville finished 1-for-5 on the man-advantage. NORTH CENTRAL SOUTH 2017 ECHL KELLY CUP PLAYOFFS MOUNTAIN SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEY Scouting The Swamp Rabbits Greenville finished the regular season with an overall record of 40-26-5-1 and 86 points, which was good for second place in the South Division standings. Forward Angelo Miceli led the team and was 10th in the ECHL with 77 points (22 goals, 55 assists). Miceli’s assist total was also fourth-best in the league. Brandon Alderson scored 26 goals in just 45 games to lead the team, while Ahti Oksanen also struck 21 times in 53 games. Defenseman Joe Houk led the blueliners in scoring and finished fourth on the team with 47 points (16 goals, 31 assists). Both goaltenders on the playoff roster played in at least 30 games for Greenville this year. Jeff Malcolm posted a record of 16-9-4 with a goals against of 3.33 and a save percentage at 0.904 while Mackenzie Skapski went 18-111 with a GAA of 3.38 and also had a 0.904 save percentage. Allan McPherson leads the team so far in the postseason with six points (two goals, four assists), while both Alderson and Tyler Brown have each lit the lamp three times. All-Time History vs. Greenville South Carolina has an overall record of 54-30-8-10 in 102 all-time regular season meetings with the Swamp Rabbits, and are now 0-2 against their in-state rival in the playoffs. Last year during the 201516 season, the divisional opponents met 11 times with the Stingrays finishing 6-4-1-0. This season, South Carolina won nine of the 14 meetings. In the matchups this year the Stingrays averaged 3.85 goals per game. Devin Performing In The Postseason Joe Devin is currently on a seven-game point scoring streak and has been on the scoresheet in 10 of his last 12 games since returning to the team after a stint in the AHL with the Cleveland Monsters. He has six goals and six assists since coming back to South Carolina and finished the regular season with 33 points (16 goals, 17 assists) in 48 games. Epp Records Multi-Point Performance To Begin Postseason Wade Epp had two assists in South Carolina’s Game 1 loss to Greenville on Thursday night, posting helpers on goals by Patrick Gaul and Kelly Zajac. Epp had just two multi-point games during the regular season, his third year with the Stingrays. He finished the season with 13 points on two goals and 11 assists while playing in 66 games on the back end. The blueliner’s penalty killing abilities have been a big reason why South Carolina ended the regular season ranked third in the ECHL with an 84.9% success rate. Keep Shooting Although they haven’t gotten the results they’ve wanted so far this postseason, the Stingrays have continued their trend of outshooting opponents, posting a combined 77-56 advantage in shots on net through the first two games of the series against Greenville. During the regular season, South Carolina averaged 30.15 shots per game, while allowing just 27.53, which was the lowest mark in the ECHL. John Parker put up a total of 11 points against the Swamp Rabbits, while Joe Devin has racked up 10 points and played in all 14 games. Goaltender Parker Milner made 10 appearances against Greenville posting a record of 7-1-2, while Adam Carlson started four games and earned the better numbers of the two against the Rabbits with a GAA of 1.97 and a save percentage at 0.925. Zajac Continues Steady Offensive Presence Forward Kelly Zajac has been on the scoresheet in both playoff games for South Carolina, scoring a breakway goal on Thursday and assisting on Joe Devin’s goal in Friday’s contest. While he’s among three Stingrays skaters with two points thus far in the postseason, Zajac has been one of the team’s top scorers all year. The Winnipeg, Man. native led South Carolina with 39 assists during the regular season and was second-best on the squad with 52 points. Both of those numbers were career-highs for the fifth-year pro. History On Their Side During their 24-year ECHL history, the Stingrays have more playoff wins than any other franchise with 110. South Carolina has qualified for the postseason in 23 of their seasons, including 10 straight campaigns. The Rays’ three Kelly Cup titles are tied with the Alaska Aces for the most of any squad. Swamp Rabbits Skate Past Rays In Game 1 The Greenville Swamp Rabbits got ahead early and held off the South Carolina Stingrays in Game 1 of the teams’ opening round Kelly Cup Playoffs series by a score of 6-3 on Thursday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Stingrays forwards Patrick Gaul, Kelly Zajac and Rob Flick each scored goals in the loss, while defenseman Wade Epp picked up two assists. The Swamp Rabbits now have a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Parker Milner made a total of 19 saves for South Carolina, while Jeff Malcolm turned aside 34 shots to earn the win for Greenville. The Stingrays out-shot the Swamp Rabbits 37-25 in the game. Flick Leads Stingrays To Overtime Win Rob Flick was welcomed back to the South Carolina Stingrays with open arms Saturday night as he factored in all four of his team’s goals in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones at the North Charleston Coliseum. Flick finished with two goals and two assists, while his linemates Andrew Cherniwchan (two assists) and Domenic Monardo (one goal, one assist) also had multi-point efforts in South Carolina’s 40th win of the season. The Stingrays are the No. 3 seed in the South Division Kelly Cup Playoffs and face the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in the opening round of the postseason this week. Goaltender Adam Carlson earned his ninth victory of his rookie season, making 24 saves in the contest for South Carolina.
